Asyraf Wajdi to sue Mas Ermieyati over Mara fund mismanagement claims

KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki intends to sue Datuk Seri Mas Ermieyati Samsudin for allegedly defaming him over the management of the agency's funds.
In a series of postings on his Facebook account, Asyraf said the Masjid Tanah member of parliament from Bersatu had accused him of misusing Mara funds through surprise visits to Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), cutting allocations for Quran memorisation (hafazan) programmes, and halting sponsorships for students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
"A certain opposition leader from Melaka just won't stop slandering me, accusing me of wasting Mara's money on surprise visits to MRSM, cutting hafazan programme funding, and no longer sponsoring TVET students.
"InsyaAllah, Mara's legal team will initiate legal proceedings against her. At first, I didn't want to entertain it, but the slander has gone too far.
"See you in court, YB Mas."
Asyraf said he had no issue with being criticised, as long as the criticism was not defamatory or baseless.
"I have no problem with being criticised.
"For example, one may argue that it is inappropriate for a non-executive chairman to conduct surprise visits to Mara educational institutions like MRSM, IKM (Mara Skills Institute), or KKTM (Mara Skills Development College) without informing the management, as it could cause inconvenience to them.
"But when it crosses the line into spreading slander with the intent to tarnish this Malay-Bumiputera institution, I have no choice but to file a defamation suit."

Veteran Journalist Emin Madi Says Receiving PGDK Award Great Honour For Him And Bernama

KOTA KINABALU, June 21 (Bernama) – Veteran journalist Datuk Emin Madi, who is also a stringer with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Sabah bureau, described the Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu (PGDK) award he received today as a significant recognition for himself in the world of journalism. Emin, 75, said the PGDK, which carries the title 'Datuk' is also seen as a very high recognition from the Sabah government to Bernama as a whole, especially the Sabah bureau staff who operate in the state. "I am very grateful, and thankful, to the state government for this award to journalists in Sabah. I believe many more journalists and writers deserve an award like this," he said to Bernama here today. Emin was met after the 2025 Sabah State Honours and Awards investiture ceremony held at Istana Seri Kinabalu today (June 21) where 60 individuals received their respective awards conferred by Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah Tun Musa Aman. Also present at the event was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and a line-up of state government leaders. Apart from Emin, two other Bernama Sabah bureau staff members, namely the head of the bureau, Fadzli Ramli, who was awarded the Ahli Darjah Kinabalu (ADK), and Sabah bureau photographer Zamain Singkui, who was awarded the Bintang Setia Kinabalu (BSK), will receive their awards in the next session (of the ceremony), the date of which is yet to be confirmed. Born in Tambunan on Nov 29, 1949, Emin began his career as a journalist in the 1970s before becoming an editor at a local newspaper, "The Sabah Times", and served as the press secretary to the former Minister of Land and Cooperative Development, Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam. Emin, a father of two, has been with Bernama since the 1990s and has written various articles in both Malay and English, as well as novels including "Salarom" and "The Green Gold of Borneo". "Salarom" won third place in the Sayembara Penulisan Novel Sempena 50 Tahun Merdeka competition, organised by Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, in 2007 where there were no first- or second-place winners. The novel was published in 2008.

Umno to continue driving Malay and bumiputra agendas

Strategic planning: Mohamad (centre) posing for a photo with other delegates at the opening of the Cheras Umno division meeting in Cheras. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will remain in the federal government to continue championing the Malay and bumiputra agendas, says party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He described the decision as a strategic move, warning that exiting the government would allow another party to take its place. 'If we leave, another party will fill the gap within two hours. We don't want to be spectators on the sidelines. It is better to be in government, where we can drive new agendas suited to today's realities,' said Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister. Mohamad, who is MP for Rembau, said this when opening the Cheras Umno division delegates' meeting here yesterday, Bernama reported. He cited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the party's key focus areas. Although the portfolio is traditionally under the Human Resources Ministry, Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had taken the lead in addressing gaps, particularly affecting Malay youths. 'Many are not dropping out because they failed exams but because they never sat for them. That's why we introduced the National TVET Policy, the National Tahfiz Policy and several other initiatives,' he said. Mohamad added that Umno was undertaking internal reforms to adapt to a shifting political landscape, following setbacks in the 15th General Election in 2022. 'The political reality now is that no party anywhere in the world can govern alone. That era has ended. 'We must be realistic. Although we have 192 divisions, our strategy should focus on constituencies we can win. Political idealism can be misleading and dangerous,' he said. He also expressed pride in Umno's internal unity, saying it was one of the few stable parties in the country. 'No one will support a party that's in disarray. We must maintain harmony and project ourselves as a moderate, peaceful force,' he added.
