Young women arrested in vehicle smuggling bust near Polokwane
POLOKWANE – Two young women, age 19 and 20, will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court today on charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
The duo were arrested on the R101 near the Polokwane weighbridge on Sunday night (May 18) during a coordinated anti-smuggling operation involving SAPS' Anti-Smuggling team, Tshimollo Security and Investigation and Reflex Anti-Hijacking Security.

The Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said officers intercepted a double cab bakkie on the R101, with preliminary investigations confirming that the vehicle was stolen last Friday (May 16) in the Garsfontein area in Pretoria.
The vehicle was destined for the Beitbridge Border Post to be smuggled into Zimbabwe.
'During the stop, one male suspect fled into nearby bushes, while two female suspects attempted to escape but were apprehended after a foot chase and arrested,' he said.
In a separate incident, officers intercepted an SUV in the Mokopane CBD, also en route to Beitbridge, with investigations revealing that the vehicle was reported stolen in the Wierdabrug policing area in Pretoria on Friday.
'The driver, a 34-year-old undocumented foreign national was arrested and will appear before the Mokopane Magistrate Court today,' Ledwaba said.
The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the operational teams for their relentless efforts, resulting in the recovery of the stolen vehicles valued at R1.4m.

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted while having an oil massage at an undisclosed hotel in Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Explaining to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the woman said that she had booked a massage at the hotel after suffering pain on both her feet while training for an upcoming sporting event. She asked the masseuse to stop what she was doing, which she did. The masseuse then asked the victim to turn over. However, that was not the end of it. When the woman lay on her back, the masseuse moved her underwear aside and began touching her private parts with one hand while fondling her breast at the same time. She recalls that her eyes were immediately filled with tears and she requested that the massage be stopped. While getting dressed, the masseuse also broke down, cried and repeatedly apologised explaining that she was bisexual and had become aroused during the massage session. The woman is currently seeking advice on registering a criminal case. A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment after being convicted for raping a 19-year-old female victim in an incident that occurred in August 2021. According to a police statement, the victim was visiting a friend at their parental home in Drikoppies Trust. While on her way back home, the accused, Calvin Shabangu, violently assaulted the victim, destroyed her mobile phone and forced her into his bedroom where he repeatedly raped her. Following the assault, the victim fled the scene and reached a nearby house for assistance. The following day, she reported the matter to her family and was taken to the Schoemansdal Police Station, where a rape case was officially opened. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Tonga, with members from Schoemansdal Visible Policing, traced and arrested Shabangu. Two soldiers stabbed to death at Mpumalanga base after altercation
Two soldiers were stabbed to death during the early hours of Saturday at the Macadamia Military Base near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga, allegedly after a confrontation with a colleague. Rear-Adm Prince Tshabalala, confirmed the incident to TimesLIVE on Saturday. 'The SA National Defence Force (SANDF) confirms that an unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of this morning at the Macadamia Military Base near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga,' Tshabalala said. 'Preliminary information indicates that a tragic altercation involving SANDF members resulted in the deaths of two soldiers. It is alleged that one of the members fatally stabbed two of his colleagues.' It is understood by TimesLIVE that the attacker then attempted to take his own life with the knife but did not succeed. The SANDF, in conjunction with the SA Police Service (SAPS), has launched a full investigation into the matter. Wanted Mozambican kidnapper killed by cops in Fourways
In yet another success story for the national anti-kidnapping task team, a wanted Mozambican kidnapper was shot dead this week during a tracing operation in Johannesburg. National police spokesperson Brig Athlende Mathe said the anti-kidnapping task team traced a Mozambican kidnapping kingpin to a block of apartments in Fourways. 'The team was tracing a kidnapped Pakistani businessman from Pretoria West. He is still in captivity and the team is still searching for [him]. A ransom demand has been made to the businessman's family,' Mathe said. The tracing operation began at a residential complex in Midrand where they seized a Mercedes-Benz, a silver Pajero and arrested two kidnappers. 'They proceeded to Fourways where the task team announced their arrival and a shoot-out ensued. One suspect was fatally wounded and upon further investigation, it was discovered that 40-year-old Mauro Mucambe Junior is a wanted kidnapping kingpin in Mozambique where he has been linked to several kidnappings. His warrant of arrest was issued by Maputo police in August 2024.' One unlicensed firearm used by the fugitive was seized, including 10 rounds of ammunition. Four cellphones and four bank cards were also seized. 'The SAPS has full faith and confidence in the work of the anti-kidnapping task team to rescue the kidnapped businessman. Since January 2024, the team has arrested more than 170 criminals involved in kidnappings for ransom. More than R1.2m has been recovered. More than 100 victims were rescued mainly in Gauteng and more than 40 vehicles used in kidnapping crimes were seized by the team. 'The anti-kidnapping task team recently registered a breakthrough in the Olorato Mongale murder case where they led the tracing operation of Philangenkosi Makhanya.
