Draft tariff policy for 2025-30 unveiled

The Government of Pakistan unveiled the draft National Tariff Policy (NTP) 2025-30 during the National Regulatory Reforms Conference organised by the Board of Investment (BOI).
The conference, aimed at advancing regulatory simplification and industrial competitiveness, brought together federal ministers, diplomats and private sector representatives for strategic dialogue on Pakistan's economic direction.
Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Commerce Rana Ihsaan Afzal underscored the government's commitment to rationalising Pakistan's tariff regime, simplifying business processes and fostering an export-led growth.
"The National Tariff Policy 2025-30 is designed to create a predictable, transparent and investment-friendly tariff structure. By facilitating duty-free access to raw material, phasing out additional customs duties and regulatory duties, and supporting nascent and green industries, this policy paves the way for innovation, employment generation and sustained economic growth," he said.
The policy outlines ambitious reform goals, including the phasing out of additional customs duties over four years, elimination of regulatory duties and 5th Schedule within five years, and establishment of a simplified four-slab customs duty structure (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%). It aims to benefit key sectors including textile, engineering, pharmaceutical and IT while encouraging investment and reducing production costs across the board. Rana Afzal highlighted that implementation would begin with reduction in tariffs on around 7,000 tariff lines, largely focused on raw material and intermediate goods, yielding Rs200 billion in benefits to trade and industry.

The post added that the US president at a moment of 'heightened regional turbulence', demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi 'which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation, ultimately securing a ceasefire and averting a broader conflict. 'This intervention stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker and his commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue,' the post read. 'The Government of Pakistan also acknowledges and greatly admires President Trump's sincere offers to help resolve the longstanding dispute of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan—an issue that lies at the heart of regional instability. Durable peace in South Asia would remain elusive until the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir.' Earlier, the US president in a meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir lauded Pakistan's ongoing efforts for regional peace and stability, and appreciated the robust counter-terrorism cooperation between the two states. President Trump commended the Field Marshal's leadership and decisiveness during a period of complex regional dynamics. He also expressed keen interest in forging a mutually beneficial trade partnership with Pakistan based on long-term strategic convergence and shared interests,' said the ISPR in a statement.

PIA brings 121 nationals from Iran
KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) successfully completed its second special rescue flight on Friday, bringing 121 Pakistani nationals safely home from Iran via Azerbaijan's capital city Baku. According to PIA spokesman, the special flight PK-7160 landed at Lahore airport at 3:40 PM, carrying passengers who had been stranded in Iran due to recent airspace restrictions that affected normal flight operations. Due to the closure of Iranian airspace, the stranded Pakistani citizens were required to travel overland to Baku, Azerbaijan, where they boarded the PIA rescue flight for their journey home to Pakistan. The complex evacuation operation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of Pakistani diplomatic missions in both Iran and Azerbaijan, who played crucial roles in facilitating the safe passage of citizens to the departure point in Baku. The special flight was dispatched on direct instructions from the Government of Pakistan, demonstrating the state's commitment to ensuring the welfare of its citizens abroad during challenging circumstances, he said. Govt seeks input for NEV policy implementation
Listen to article The government has started seeking feedback on the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30, which is a key step towards implementation of the draft policy termed not just an environmental commitment but also an economic imperative. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan addressed a dissemination and feedback workshop on Pakistan's NEV Policy 2025-30, where he highlighted it as a milestone in the country's journey towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable transport future. He stated that the NEV Policy was a vital component of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision to ensure that 30% of all new vehicle sales were electric by 2030. He emphasised that the policy was not just an environmental commitment but also an economic imperative. He noted that implementation of the NEV Policy could reduce up to 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, save $1 billion in annual oil imports and help avoid Rs405 billion in health-related costs. Moreover, the policy will enable productive use of 126 terawatt hours (TWh) of surplus electricity, which would otherwise go to waste. To encourage EV adoption, the government is offering consumer subsidies including Rs65,000 for electric two-wheelers, Rs400,000 for electric three-wheelers and Rs15,000 per kilowatt-hour for electric four-wheelers. Additionally, 40 fast charging stations are expected to become operational on highways by the end of 2025, improving infrastructure for EV users. Haroon Akhtar announced that provinces were being encouraged to offer free NEV registration to support nationwide adoption. He emphasised the policy's role in promoting industrial growth and local manufacturing, noting that 57 local manufacturing certificates had been issued and over 90% localisation for electric motorcycles and rickshaws had already been achieved. International players are showing growing interest in Pakistan's NEV sector, which Akhtar described as a positive signal for foreign investment and technology transfer.
