Limpopo police dismantle vehicle smuggling ring, recover R1. 4 million in stolen cars
Limpopo police have dismantled a vehicle smuggling ring, arresting three suspects and recovering two vehicles valued at about R1.4 million.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said that a joint operation between the SAPS Anti-Smuggling Team, Tshimollo Security and Investigation, and Reflex Anti-Hijacking Security successfully intercepted a Toyota Hilux GD6 double cab on the R101 near the Polokwane weighbridge.
Mashaba explained that during the interception, three suspects fled the scene — one managed to evade police, while two were apprehended.
'During the stop, one male suspect fled into nearby bushes, while two female suspects attempted to escape but were apprehended after a foot chase. The female suspects, aged 19 and 20, were arrested and are facing charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.'
He further stated that initial investigations confirmed the vehicle was stolen on May 16 in the Garsfontein policing area of Pretoria, Gauteng province.
The Star also reported that on Monday, police intercepted a Toyota Corolla Cross at Mokopane CBD on the R101, reported stolen on May 16 in the Wierdabrug policing area. The driver, a 34-year-old undocumented foreign national, was arrested following a high-speed chase.
Mashaba stated that both vehicles, valued at approximately R1.4 million, were destined to be smuggled across the Beitbridge Port of Entry into Zimbabwe on Sunday, 18 May 2025.
The Toyota Hilux suspects and the Corolla Cross driver are due in Polokwane and Mokopane magistrates' courts, respectively, on May 20.
'Both suspects arrested with the Toyota Hilux will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, while the suspect arrested with the Toyota Corolla Cross will appear before the Mokopane Magistrate Court on the same day.'
Meanwhile, Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the teams for their relentless efforts in recovering the stolen vehicles.

ActionSA calls for NPA head Shamila Batohi to be suspended
JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA is calling for the suspension of National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shamila Batohi, saying the organisation has failed to successfully prosecute some high-profile cases. Responding to parliamentary questions from EFF MP Betty Diale, Groenewald said the department spent R1.4 billion on the provision of food on prisoners in 2023/24 financial year. The amount had increased to R1.5 billion in the last financial year that ended in March 2025. The document puts the provision for food to the tune of R952,975. Groenewald also said the department planned to maximise the utilisation of the services of the prisoners to produce food for themselves, to enable the department to redirect funds to other essential programmes. He said the prisoners will participate in the production workshops in agriculture to maximise their skills utilisation for bread and agricultural production for their ration. 'The self-sufficiency and sustainability programme in the department is centred around offender development, through the provision of work opportunities to offenders in bakeries and agriculture. Expansion of bakeries and agricultural projects towards an increase in offender skills utilisation for food production,' he said. The department's strategic plan document states that the department wants to become self-sustainable through activities such as those in production workshops, bakeries, agriculture, skills development, formal education and training, as well as through arts and culture. 'The department will expand marketing of production workshops' products and services to other client departments to improve revenue generation.' Meanwhile, Groenewald revealed that the cost per capita per inmate incarcerated for the 2025/26 financial year is R462.13 per day. Asked how his department managed financial implications for imprisonment of foreign nationals, he said there were 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals in prisons as at May 4 this year. 'The total cost to accommodate 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals on 4 May 2025 was R6,091,335.53 per day.' He stated that foreign national prisoners were not a separate category of inmates. Groenewald added that there were currently no bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries to transfer sentenced foreign national prisoners to serve in their countries of origin. 'The DCS is in consultation with the South African Police Service, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, and Department of International Relations and Cooperation to formalise a South African procedure to inter-state transfer of offenders.'

Central residents urged to adhere to gun laws
Pretoria Central SAPS are encouraging residents to obtain the correct certification to carry firearms in light of a recent spate of illegal possession arrests. While expressing his approval over his station's recent successes, station commander Brigadier Hlengane Gibin Mashaba said illegal firearms pose a serious risk to public safety. 'We want to call on all people who have firearms to ensure they complete their firearm competency training, thus ensuring they meet the legal requirements to possess a firearm,' Mashaba said. In the most recent arrest, a 19-year-old was taken into custody after police recovered a firearm in his possession, which he did not have a permit for. A team led by Captain Nthuteng Mogotsi, consisting of Constable Itumeleng Kgasago, patrollers Thoko Nchabeleng, Samuel Mathato, and Mpho Chaka, were conducting stop-and-searches in the inner city. At around 23:00, they came across a white VW Polo on Eeufees Road. '[When] approaching the vehicle, the members requested permission to search the car. They recovered a calibre loaded with one round hidden in a cabin. Unfortunately, the suspect did not have a valid document to possess the firearm. Steps were taken to confiscate the firearm for further ballistic analysis, and the suspect was taken to the station and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm,' said Constable Thabang Nkhumise. The arrest came on June 17, a few days after two suspects had been arrested for possession of two unregistered firearms and another for the same charge in separate instances. The 19-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court pending further investigation. The other three suspects remain in custody pending investigation and to address verification. Nkhumise said the block around the station and magistrate's court has had a power outage for the past three days, delaying a lot of cases.
