Oil prices seesaw as investors await Iran response to US strikes - Economy

Oil prices wobbled and stock markets wavered Monday as traders awaited Tehran's response to US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. US and European stocks retreated while Asian equities were mixed, with markets keeping a close eye on whether Iran will block the crucial Strait of Hormuz, which carries one-fifth of global oil output. When trading opened on Monday, international benchmark crude contract Brent and US equivalent WTI both jumped more than four percent to hit their highest price since January. They later dipped briefly into the red and then wobbled, standing up 0.3 percent as Wall Street opened for trading. "Will Iran choose to choke off the Strait of Hormuz or not? That is the big question," said Bjarne Schieldrop, chief commodities analyst at SEB bank. But, "looking at the oil price this morning it is clear that the oil market doesn't assign a very high probability of it happening," he added. Iran is the world's ninth-biggest oil-producing country, exporting just under half of the 3.3 million barrels it produces per day. "The prevailing view appears to be that the US involvement will prove limited militarily, yet effective, by seriously undermining Iran's nuclear ambitions," said David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation. "Investors are also speculating that Iran's ability to retaliate has been severely restricted," he added. Tensions remained elevated however as Iran and Israel intensified attacks on each other on the war's 11th day. "The markets are not yet reacting with any degree of panic to the US airstrike on Iran's nuclear facilities as they await to see how Tehran responds," said AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould. Wall Street stocks opened slightly lower, with the S&P 500 index slipping 0.1 percent. In Europe, sentiment on the Paris and Frankfurt stock markets was also hit by a closely watched survey that showed eurozone business activity was almost stagnant again in June. London's stock exchange was lower with shares in airlines, including EasyJet and British Airways-owner IAG, suffering losses on fears of rising energy costs and disruptions in travel to the Middle East. In Asia, Tokyo was lower while Hong Kong and Shanghai gained. "So far, satellite images reportedly suggest that oil continues to flow through the Strait, which may explain the muted market reaction to the news," said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank. She added that there is optimism that Iran will avoid full-blown retaliation "to prevent its own oil facilities from becoming targets and to avoid a widening conflict that could hurt China -- its biggest oil customer." But "if things get uglier" the price of US crude could even spike beyond $100 per barrel, she said. Brent was trading at above $77 per barrel on Monday while WTI was around $74. The dollar rose against other currencies but analysts questioned to what extent this would hold out. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Swedish embassy National Day celebration in Cairo focuses on climate action, green innovation

The Swedish embassy in Cairo celebrated Sweden's National Day by emphasizing shared commitments to climate action and showcasing Swedish innovations driving sustainable development in Egypt. Sweden celebrates its National Day every year on 6 June. The day highlights two historical events: Gustav Vasa's election as King of Sweden on 6 June 1523 and the approval of an important constitution on 6 June 1809. Both occasions are important milestones in the kingdom's history and laid the foundation for Sweden's development as a modern European nation state. To mark the anniversary, the Swedish embassy in Cairo hosted a grand event on 18 June 2025 at the residence of Swedish Ambassador to Egypt Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt in Zamalek. This year's National Day celebration in Cairo carried a special message: a shared commitment to climate action, sustainability, and green innovation. The event brought together Egyptian and Swedish partners to commemorate the contribution of Swedish cutting-edge innovations in addressing climate change. The day highlighted Sweden's global leadership in sustainable development and its strong cooperation with Egypt on environmental issues. In his speech, Ambassador Juhlin-Dannfelt said: "Climate change is not just an environmental issue but a human issue, a development issue, and a matter of justice." "Sweden has set ambitious goals to become one of the world's first fossil-free welfare nations. We are investing in clean energy, circular economy models, and sustainable urban development not only at home, but through partnerships around the world,' he added. The Swedish ambassador also underlined Sweden's support for Egypt's environmental agenda, highlighting the growing number of Swedish companies contributing to sustainable development in Egypt. 'Swedish businesses are key drivers of this transformation. Across industries from transport to textiles, from digital infrastructure to design, Swedish companies are embedding sustainability into their core. They are showing that green growth is not only possible, but profitable and indeed necessary for our planet,' the ambassador noted. Furthermore, he expressed his pride in seeing the growing collaboration between Sweden and Egypt in many of these areas. "Together, we are exploring new opportunities in areas such as sustainable energy and transport. We believe that by working together across borders and sectors, we can build a more sustainable and inclusive future for all,' he stated. Swedish Ambassador Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt delivers his speech at the national day party. The celebration featured an exhibition by 18 Swedish companies operating in Egypt, where they showcased their innovative products and services. Guests had the opportunity to engage with industry leaders, discuss how Swedish companies contribute to addressing climate change in Egypt, and explore potential collaborations. The exhibition highlighted the significant contributions made by Swedish businesses to Egypt's economic and environmental development. Sweden's National Day celebration featured Swedish companies operating in Egypt. The ambassador said the mission of the Swedish embassy in Cairo is to represent Sweden and promote Swedish interests in Egypt. "The embassy is charged with sustaining and developing relations between Sweden and Egypt within a wide range of political, commercial, economic, and cultural matters of mutual interest,' he concluded. Euro Surges Against Egyptian Pound to Over 30-Piaster Jump

Taarek Refaat The euro witnessed a notable surge against the Egyptian pound on Sunday, marking a significant start to the banking first day of the week in Egypt. The exchange rate climbed by more than 30 piasters compared to Saturday's rates, reflecting growing foreign exchange pressures amid ongoing economic reforms and global uncertainty. According to official data from Egyptian banks, the euro traded at EGP 58.09 for purchase and EGP 58.21 for sale at the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE). At Egypt's two largest state-owned banks—National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr—the euro climbed even higher, recording EGP 58.33 to buy and EGP 58.71 to sell. Sunday's rate spike marks one of the strongest weekly openings for the euro in Egypt this year, following a series of steady gains throughout June. Compared to early June—when the euro hovered around EGP 56.4–56.6—the current exchange rate reflects a total increase of nearly 2 Egyptian pounds in just over two weeks. 'The sharp appreciation of the euro against the pound highlights renewed pressure on Egypt's foreign exchange market,' said a senior currency trader at a private Cairo bank, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'It may be due to a mix of reduced hard currency inflows, seasonal demand, and adjustments linked to the government's ongoing economic reform agenda.' Egypt continues to navigate a complex economic landscape as it implements IMF-backed reforms. These include a more flexible exchange rate regime, subsidy cuts, and efforts to attract foreign direct investment. While these policies are aimed at stabilizing long-term economic fundamentals, they have also resulted in short-term volatility in the local currency. The euro's strength may also be tied to regional and global factors. Analysts point to tighter European Central Bank policy, geopolitical tensions, and shifting investor sentiment in emerging markets as contributing forces behind capital outflows from Egypt and similar economies. For Egyptian households and businesses, the rise in euro prices adds further pressure to an economy already grappling with inflation and rising import costs. Imported goods priced in euros—ranging from pharmaceuticals to industrial equipment—are likely to become more expensive if the trend continues. Tourists traveling to Europe this summer will also feel the pinch, as the cost of exchanging pounds for euros rises sharply. Meanwhile, Egyptian exporters and those receiving remittances in euros may find some relief in the stronger European currency.
