Mike Flanagan Confirms His CLAYFACE Movie Script Was Inspired by BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES — GeekTyrant
Mike Flanagan is one hell of a filmmaker and storyteller, and in the projects he works on, he's no stranger to horror or heartbreak. It sounds like both were baked into his original vision for Clayface .
While promoting his new film, The Life of Chuck , the filmmaker opened up about the DC project he once had his hands on and confirmed that his version of Clayface was heavily inspired by the acclaimed two-part Batman: The Animated Series episode 'Feat of Clay.'
When asked if his script was inspired by that, Flanagan told ComicBook:
'Of course it was. I mean that is the perfect [story]. 'Feat of Clay,' Ron Perlman, to me, that's it. That two-parter knocked me out. The short answer is that is absolutely that is what inspired my script.
'That is the world I wanted to live in. Batman: The Animated Series when I was growing up was my Batman. As much as [Michael] Keaton was my Batman, The Animated Series really was my Batman.'
That emotional anchor from the animated series clearly left a mark on Flanagan. While he's not directing the film due to other projects like Carrie, his story may still shape the final product.
A new writer has since jumped on the project, and word is, it's said to be getting a page one rewrite, which is a shame, if true. Flanagan went on to say:
'I don't know what they're doing with Clayface. I'm not directing it, and that filmmaker will need to make it their own. I know that they're doing work on the script.
'I'm off doing other things now, I really hope it remains true to the spirit of what I wanted it to be. But it's not my movie, so I'll be in the audience with you, anxious to see how it comes out.'
Clayface is currently slated as the third film in James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe, with a September 2026 release date. James Watkins ( The Woman in Black ) is attached to direct, and the screenplay is currently being revised by Hossein Amini ( Drive, Obi-Wan Kenobi ). No casting has been announced, but production is expected to begin later this year.
As for 'Feat of Clay,' it tells the tragic origin of Matt Hagen, a disfigured actor who, in desperation, uses an experimental chemical called Renuyu to shapeshift and keep working. The thing is, It's addictive, and he becomes a puppet for corrupt businessman Roland Daggett, leading to his horrific transformation into Clayface.
That storyline is packed with body horror and emotional despair, feels like something Flanagan could have knocked out of the park.
Previous story reports hinted that Clayface would follow a washed-up B-movie actor who takes a mysterious substance to stay relevant. It's not hard to see how Flanagan might have riffed on the classic Daggett/Hagen dynamic, updated for a new audience, but still rooted in themes of desperation, addiction, and exploitation.
Hopefully, not everything that Flanagan delivered in his script will be scrubbed away. With Amini's track record and Watkins' eye for atmosphere, Clayface could very well be DC's first true body horror character study. A monster movie with a soul.
And while Flanagan isn't behind the camera, here's hoping the bones of his version stay intact. Because if done right, this could be a great film.

McAAP gets a new commander
McAlester Army Ammunition Plant has a new commander. Col. Gabriel W. Pryor relinquished command to Col. Curtis S. Perkins in the change of command ceremony at the McAlester base Wednesday. 'This change in command marks more than a transition of leadership,' Pryor said. 'It's a moment to reflect on our journey here, to honor the team and to recognize the strength that lives in this installation and its people.' McAlester Army Ammunition Plant is the Department of Defense premier bomb and warhead-loading facility. It supplies about one-third of munitions across the Department of Defense. The plant delivers thousands of Mark 84 2,000-pound bombs, M11 artillery rounds, 105 artillery rounds and more. McAAP is one of 14 Joint Munitions Command installations and one of 23 organic industrial bases under U.S. Army Materiel Command. It is the site of production, storage, distribution and demilitarization. Officials said armies historically use a flag or other symbol to serve as a rallying point under which their soldiers would gather before combat and reorganize during battle. The passing of the colors during the change of command ceremony symbolizes the original purpose and represents the official transfer of command. Brig. Gen. Daniel J. Duncan opened the Change of Command ceremony. He thanked McAAP's community partners and elected leaders, thanked Pryor's family for their support and thanked Pryor for his service. 'It just shows how much he takes care of people and not just the mission,' Duncan said about Pryor's leadership and his priority of McAAP employees' safety. Pryor was commissioned in May 1999 as a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps from the Army ROTC program at Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. He earned a Master of Policy Management from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. He held several positions in his military career, including Distribution Branch Chief, Aide-de-Camp to the Deputy Commander and Joint Planner, USTRANSCOM, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, 2015-2017; Battalion Commander, 47th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, Division G4, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas, 2018-2021; and McAlester Army Ammunition Plant Commander, McAlester, Oklahoma, 2023-2025. Pryor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, and a Master of Policy Management from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Perkins was commissioned in December 1999 as a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster branch from the Army ROTC program at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, South Carolina. He has earned a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a Master of Military Operational Art and Science from the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Master of Arts in procurement and acquisition management from Webster University, and a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering technology from South Carolina State University. Colorado's Empower Field at Mile High to take precautions for heat during The Weeknd concert
This Saturday, thousands of people are expected to attend The Weeknd concert at Empower Field at Mile High, and venue organizers are working to make sure the heat doesn't ruin the fun. The Weeknd is a popular Canadian singer and songwriter famous for hits such as "Blinding Lights," "Starboy" and "Die For You." His stop in Denver is part of the "After Hours Til Dawn Tour" with Playboi Carti. Officials expect there to be a large crowd and heavy traffic during the concert and are encouraging guests to arrive early. The heat advisory will go into effect at 11 a.m. and remain in place until 6 p.m. The stadium management company said there will be several precautions in place, including additional medical staff to help concert goers with heat related issues. Some areas around the stadium will be used as expanded medical treatment areas, and over 30 free water refilling stations will be positioned throughout the stadium. Organizers said there will also be water refilling stations outside the east and west areas of the stadiums for guests waiting to enter. Precautions will also be in place to protect staff from the heat, with additional break areas with hydration stations.
