‘Serious errors' in SSC evaluation a blot on the government, say student organisations

The Hindu31-05-2025

Leaders of student organisations have slammed the TDP-led coalition government for 'serious errors' in the evaluation of SSC answer sheets, and have accused it of failing the student community.
All India Student Federation (AISF) State vice-president Sai Kumar said, in the haste to release the SSC results in record time and gain mileage out of it, the persons handling the evaluation task lost focus and delivered inaccurate results.
He said, for the first time in history, as many as 66,363 students applied for re-evaluation and, out of them, over 11,000, who were earlier declared failed, now passed. Their percentage of marks also significantly increased.
Stating that the inaccurate results caused immense disappointment to many students, he said there were reports of a few distraught students attempting suicide.
Mr. Sai Kumar said it was unfortunate that despite such gross mistake, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh had not made any statement on the issue so far.
Student Federation of India State president P. Rammohan Rao and secretary K. Prasanna Kumar accused the government of finding scapegoats in teachers for its own failures.
They alleged that the authorities were in a hurry to commence Intermediate classes in favour of the corporate institutions. They said drifting from the usual practice of allocating 15 days' time for completion of evaluation, the government brought pressure on teachers to wind up in a week, leading to the errors.
Citing examples, they said a student named Mokshitha secured 21 marks in Social Studies initially, but scored 84 after re-evaluation, another student from Bapatla scored 23 marks in Social Studies, but secured 96 after re-evaluation, and in Eluru, a student wrote a 14-page answer, but only eight pages were evaluated.
Stating that the students suffered immensely due to the government's negligence, they demanded that action against teachers should be dropped and the re-evaluation fees collected from students should be refunded.

What Karnataka's new crowd control bill proposes

Facing flak over the handling of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, which resulted in the death of 11 cricket fans in a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy stadium on June 4, the Karnataka government has proposed a new legislation to manage crowds at events. The Karnataka Crowd Control (Managing Crowd at Events and Venues of Mass Gathering) Bill 2025 looks to 'effectively manage and control crowds at sponsored events and venues of mass gathering' such as political rallies, conferences and other events. It excludes 'jatra, rathotsava, pallakki utsava, teppada teru, urus, or any religious event pertaining to any religion, caste or creed'.Discussed in a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 19 and slated to come up for approval in the next cabinet meeting, the draft bill lays down guidelines on standard operating procedures for managing crowds, including protocols for dealing with emergencies as well as provisions for reserved seating, security systems, access control and advanced check-in solutions to prevent bottlenecks while ensuring smooth crowd flow. 'There shall be independent audits of every venue's capacity, entry/exit routes, emergency evacuation options and communication systems,' reads the draft. 'Venues that don't comply with safety standards should not be allowed to host high footfall events.' In case of emergency, the jurisdictional police station may postpone or cancel the event, or change its by event planners shall be punished with 'imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine up to Rs 5 lakh'. 'The event planner is responsible to pay the compensation to the person who is severely injured in such an event, mass gathering pertaining to political rally, jatra, conference etc, or compensation to the family member of the deceased. In case of the event planner not paying the compensation, the government may collect the amount as arrears of land revenue. The event planner's property can be auctioned by the government,' the bill outrage following the tragic loss of lives at the RCB victory celebrations had put the Siddaramaiah-led Congress on the backfoot, even as the Karnataka High Court registered a suo motu petition to hear the matter. The CM sacked his close aide and political advisor K. Govindaraju, while ordering the suspensions of five police officers, including the city police commissioner. A day after the incident, representatives of RCB and an event management company were placed under arrest. Meanwhile, even as a separate probe by the district magistrate is underway, the government instituted an inquiry under retired judge Justice John Michael The Congress government also came under attack from opposition parties, which took out protests holding the government responsible for the tragedy and demanded the CM's to India Today Magazine

Woman, Two Daughters Abducted At Gunpoint In MP, Congress Slams BJP Over Law & Order Situation

Last Updated: The police have arrested five in connection with the matter, and a search is currently underway to trace the woman and her daughters. A woman and her two daughters were allegedly kidnapped by a group of over 12 men after the kidnappers opened fire and injured her husband in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, reported PTI, citing police on Sunday. The men assaulted Hariram Pal and his family before abducting his wife and daughters, aged 7 and 5, at gunpoint. According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer Naveen Dubey, the incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon, at nearly 12:30 p.m. in Sumedi village under Lavkushnagar police station limits. The accused arrived on motorcycles and four-wheelers. While the police have arrested five in connection with the matter, a search is currently underway to trace the woman and her daughters. An official informed that the arrested individuals have been taken into custody and a case has been registered against them under various Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections, including attempt to murder. A video of the incident has also emerged online. It shows the accused carrying out the kidnapping in full public view. The official revealed the woman and her daughters were forced into an SUV and driven away as shots were fired in the air. Meanwhile, speaking to the reporters, Pal said that he was shot at while trying to rescue his wife and children, but he survived. The incident has triggered a public outrage, with the opposition attacking the BJP-led state government over the law and order situation in the state. 'A woman and her two children were kidnapped in broad daylight in Chhatarpur. The accused opened fire and forcibly took them away in a car," state Congress president Jitu Patwari said in a post on X. He also questioned the silence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also holds the home portfolio. Senior Congress leader and former state chief minister Kamal Nath raised concerns and said, 'There is no fear of law left in Madhya Pradesh. Such film-style crimes point to a state of jungle raj. This is deeply worrying." Amid the backlash, the Madhya Pradesh Home Department, in a post on X, confirmed a case has been filed in the case under multiple sections, including on charges of attempted murder in Sumedi village. Many Nations Ready To Supply Iran With Their Nuclear Warheads: Top Putin Aide

New Delhi: Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Sunday that he will travel to Moscow for high-level talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following overnight US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Istanbul, Mr Araghchi said the consultations with President Putin would take place Monday morning. The move comes in the immediate aftermath of the US targeting three key Iranian nuclear sites, in what Washington has described as a "necessary step" to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. "Russia is a friend of Iran, we always consult with each other," Araghchi told reporters. "I'm going to Moscow this afternoon for serious consultations with the Russian president tomorrow morning." The strikes, ordered by US President Donald Trump, took place late Saturday night, nine days into an Israeli-led aerial campaign targeting Iranian nuclear infrastructure. U.S. officials claimed the attacks were focused on neutralising Iran's potential nuclear weapons programme. The Iranian foreign minister condemned the strikes as a gross violation of international law, adding that they had "crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities." He warned that Tehran would invoke its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. "We have to respond," he said. Medvedev: "Trump Has Started Another War" In Moscow, Dmitry Medvedev, ex-Russia president and the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, launched an attack on President Trump, accusing him of plunging the United States into a new war in the Middle East. Medvedev published his reaction on Telegram, stating bluntly, "Trump, who came in as a peacemaker president, has started a new war for the U.S." The former Russian president questioned the effectiveness of the US operation, saying it had failed to achieve any substantial military objectives. "Critical infrastructure of the nuclear fuel cycle appears to have been unaffected or sustained only minor damage," he wrote. "The enrichment of nuclear material - and now we can say it outright, the future production of nuclear weapons - will continue." In one of his most provocative assertions, Medvedev claimed that "a number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads." He did not identify which nations he was referring to. Medvedev further stated that the Israeli population was now living under constant threat, with explosions rocking multiple parts of the country. "The US is now entangled in a new conflict, with prospects of a ground operation looming on the horizon," he added. He also suggested that the attacks had politically strengthened Iran. "Iran's political regime has survived - and in all likelihood, has come out even stronger. The people are rallying around the country's spiritual leadership, including those who were previously indifferent or opposed to it." Iran's Position Mr Araghchi, meanwhile, dismissed any suggestion that Tehran would rejoin diplomatic talks under current conditions. "We were in the middle of diplomacy. We were in the middle of talks with the United States when Israelis blew it up," he said. He added that negotiations with European interlocutors were ongoing in Geneva just two days prior to the US strikes. "And again, this time, Americans decided to blow it up," he said. "So it was not Iran, but the US who betrayed diplomacy. They betrayed negotiations." Iran's top diplomat asserted that the Mr Trump administration had effectively disqualified itself from any future peace initiatives. "They have proved that they are not men of diplomacy, and they only understand the language of threat and force. And this is very unfortunate," Mr Araghchi said.
