In that special space reserved for the winners, another dream had just come true. A tough little filly called Cercene had just won The Coronation Stakes, one of Royal Ascot 's Championship races, and her connections were beside themselves.
'It's a lifetime's ambition to have a Group One winner,' said Joseph Murphy, a 70-year-old from Tipperary who has been training horses since 1977. 'This is 50 years of work – that's what it is. It's just a whole group of people together. This is heaven on earth.'
Money could not have bought the feeling that washed over Murphy on Friday. Success at this meeting hits differently compared to any other time of year, as this is the place to be – and be seen.
But money, though, is a theme that washes through the week. Racing finds itself in a tricky position at present, with a number of issues to address and problems to solve, but step into Ascot and you would wonder there are complaints about the sport.
Ascot, you see, appeals to all. At one end of the spectrum, you have an influential owners such as Kia Joorabchian, the successful football agent, going head-to-head with the American financial whizz John Stewart at auction on Monday evening.
The Goffs London Sale, staged in Kensington Gardens, kick starts Royal Ascot week, with high rollers from around the world coming in to buy horses that ready to run and hold entries at the meeting.
Joorabchian and Stewart went head-to-head in dramatic fashion for Lot 10, a beautiful colt called Ghostwriter, with the former coming out on top. Ghostwriter will run for a first prize of £141,775 in Saturday's Hardwucke Stakes. He cost Joorabchian £2million.
You don't need pockets that deep, however, to get the unbridled joy of an Ascot win. Havana Hurricane blew his rivals away in the Windsor Castle Stakes on Wednesday and had been bought for £9,000 by his trainer Eve Johnson Houghton. His bounty for winning was £62,381.
This provides the best example of the spectrum that Royal Ascot takes in. It is for everyone and you can enjoy it, however much you want to pay.
Of course it is possible to pay through the nose. Entry into the Queen Anne Enclosure is £110 and, on your way to it, you will walk past pop-up stalls from luxury watchmaker Longines and bespoke fashion designer LK Bennett.
The outfits racegoers are wearing show that no expense has been spared, with gentlemen applying little luxurious flourishes to their Morning Suits by buying floral buttonholes from a trader on Ascot High Street.
The charge is at your discretion but it was easy to see crisp £20 notes being tendered for the service.
Yet it's not all bank-breaking stuff. One gentleman on X posted that his tie for the meeting, pink and purple to match his waistcoat, had cost £1.70 from a local charity shop.
'You have 300,000 people over five days; everyone from the King of England to someone who has saved all of their expendable income over the last few months,' said Ascot CEO Fliss Barnard during an interview with the Sunday Telegraph ahead of the meeting. 'There's an ecosystem of getting the product right, the pricing and how you're telling people about it.'

Guinness costs £7.80 a pint, in line with what you would pay at Cheltenham, Aintree or Newmarket (courses that are owned by The Jockey Club); Whispering Angel, the rose wine that is enormously popular, will set you back £75 for a bottle, while a bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne is £100. All bars have been doing a roaring trade.
Not that you have needed alcohol to combat the raging temperatures: there are 16 hydration stations around Ascot and free bottles of water have been given away at the end of the day to keep racegoers cool.
The customer experience is key. Barnard, a 42-year-old mother-of-two who once worked with West Ham, makes the point about an ecosystem and she is right: you can bring a picnic into the centre of the course, open from Thursday to Saturday, and spend as much or as little as you want.
A ticket to the Heath enclosure is £45 and when you compare that to other sporting events, it is impossible not to see the value. The quality of the sport, which is what it is all about, is relentlessly high, with superstars emerging from all angles.
It costs Ascot £30million to stage the event but the return is exceptional, as between 70 and 80 per cent of their annual turnover is generated. The most recent financial figures saw Ascot turnover £110.9million, so it illustrates the importance.
Another aspect to emphasise is that £200million loan that they took out in 2005 to build the stand that takes your breath away – one American visitor on Wednesday stood and looked at it from the parade ring for five minutes in awe – has been paid back.
Study the figures long enough and it is enough to make you dizzy but one thing is true: the buzz it provides, the memories it creates is on another level. Murphy called 'heaven' – he wouldn't be alone in speaking that way.

Fans of a popular movie series said they were constantly being distracted from the sequel film's plot because one of the zombies kept flaunting his surprisingly large penis. 28 Years Later, which came out Friday, is the follow-up to 28 Days Later, a 2002 apocalypse film starring Cillian Murphy. The premise is that Murphy's character, a bicycle courier, wakes up 28 days after a highly contagious virus was released, causing society in Britain to collapse. The sequel, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes, focused on a small group of survivors of the so-called 'Rage Virus' 28 years after the initial outbreak. Throughout the 2025 film, the group is repeatedly pursued by the Alpha, the noticeably hung zombie that has caught the attention of people on social media. The Alpha is presumably the leader of the infected and is bigger, stronger and obviously more well-endowed than his counterparts. Dr. Kelson, one of the survivors played by Fiennes, calls him Samson, a reference to the biblical hero of the same name known for his extraordinary strength and his battles against the Philistines. The Alpha certainly lives up to his name, as he is able to withstand barrages of arrows and pull off the heads of humans with their spines still attached. But the Alpha's power in that department was largely ignored by social media users, nearly all of whom were thoroughly focused on his downstairs anatomy. Many threw around the joke that the film should have been called 28 Inches Later. One commenter pointed out that the constant full frontal male nudity was only possible because the zombies were wearing no clothes. According to the movie's logic, they were nude because the clothes they had been wearing had degraded in the decades since they were infected. 'The infected in 28 years later don't wear clothes and it's one infected who got like a 10 incher,' they wrote. Another person compared the Alpha to Jason Momoa in looks, though the famous actor wasn't actually in the movie. 'Went to 28 years later. Wasn't expecting to see a well hung Jason Momoa zombie throughout the whole thing lmao,' they wrote. Someone else began to write what seemed like a legitimate review of the movie, only to mention the penis once more. '28 Years Later is a hauntingly beautiful, deeply affecting evolution of the franchise. There's horror and dread, but also strangely stunning moments of beauty and a giant zombie dong. Well worth the wait,' the person wrote. But the Alpha's power in that department was largely ignored by social media users, nearly all of whom were thoroughly focused on his downstairs anatomy Behind the scenes, it was a nightmare to film the movie, said Director Danny Boyle. That's because with all the extras playing nude zombies, the film crew needed to take extra care to protect the film's child star, Alfie Williams. Boyle told PEOPLE: 'I mean, if you're recently infected [with the zombie virus], you'd have some clothes, but if you've been infected for a long time, the clothes would just disintegrate with the way that you behave. 'We never knew [about rules governing nudity on set when there's a child present] going in, it was a nightmare.' In order to still film scenes featuring naked zombies while adhering to the safeguarding rules, Boyle revealed the actors had to wear prosthetics. 'Interestingly, because there was a 12-year-old boy on set, you're not allowed for anybody to be naked, not really naked, so they look naked, but it's all prosthetics,' he shared. 'So it's like: ''Oh my God,'' so we had to make everybody prosthetic genitals.' Boyle said he was keen to push boundaries with the elements of nudity and gore in the film, and he's glad studio bosses were supportive of his plans. So far, 28 Years Later has been well received, with an 89 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Field Of Gold and Ombudsman had already produced sublime performances in the St James's Palace Stakes and Prince of Wales's Stakes respectively during the first two days of the Royal meeting, but the elusive Gold Cup victory for the Clarehaven team's staying stalwart rubber stamped a stellar five days. John Gosden said: 'It's been a terrific week and I think the highlight must be Trawlerman. he's been in the yard five years, he's by Golden Horn and he wears his heart on his sleeve. 'He's the most genuine horse and in his races he will do everything, but when you're with him in person he is a kind, sweet, gentle soul, and for him to run the race he did having coming second last year – what a fantastic result for the horse and for the sport.' Trawlerman won Thursday's Gold Cup (David Davies/PA) The Gosden team finished the week with five winners, the same number as O'Brien, but took the prize due to on extra silver medal they picked up through the week. Gosden Sr has previously won the award twice on his own and praised his son Thady after winning the award for a second time as a training partnership. John Gosden – who registered his 70th Royal Ascot winner this week – continued: 'Our week started very strongly with the right races and everyone working at home had the horses spot-on. 'They've run very well since, finishing second and third and second and third, and that of course counts towards winning this when you're at five winners all with Aidan O'Brien. 'Thady has been with me about eight years already – and the rest – so, poor chap, it must be getting a bit annoying! 'But there is nothing like this meeting, it's our Olympics, and it's great to win this. Without him I wouldn't be as on the ball at all. It's been a great combination.' Field Of Gold impressed on Tuesday (David Davies/PA) Reflecting on Field Of Gold's dazzling Group One victory which lit up the opening day of the fixture, he added: 'Field Of Gold is a horse who has just improved and improved and improved. 'His sire Kingman was a peerless miler, but he has shown the electric turn of foot his sire had. It was a great race with all three Guineas winners from north-western Europe in the same race. He is very exciting for Juddmonte and for all of us.' Ballydoyle handler O'Brien may have been thwarted in his quest for a fourth successive leading trainer prize, but his number one jockey Ryan Moore was out on his own as top rider for the 12th time. He capped yet another fine week in Berkshire with his seventh success of the meeting aboard Willie Mullins' Sober in the concluding Queen Alexandra Stakes to finish two clear of Oisin Murphy. Sober won the final race of the meeting for Ryan Moore (John Walton/PA) Moore said: 'It's great to ride seven winners, Aidan's horses were in great form all work, when you're riding for Aidan and Willie you're going to ride winners.' Both Coolmore and Wathnan Racing finished the week with five winners, but it was Coolmore who came out on top for the third year running on account of their superior record with placed horses. Coolmore's MV Magnier said: 'It means a lot to everyone. The guys and everyone put everything into this week, and for Aidan and Ryan to do such a good job, it's incredible. 'We're very grateful and we are very lucky to be here. We are very lucky to have the King and Queen present every day this week. It's a big deal for our business.'
