Dublin fashion creative on TikTok, personal style & online trolls
Sínann Fetherston chats with fashion TikTok creator Matthew Lenehan about his style staples and how he deals with online trolls.
For Matthew Lenehan, a fashion creator on TikTok with almost 30k followers to his name, if you don't step out into the world feeling a little bit stupid, you're in need of an outfit change.
"If I was just starting out, I would do two things," he says of curating a stylish wardrobe. "First, find some outfits that you like, on TikTok or on Pinterest, and just copy them. Doesn't have to be piece for piece, just get the clothes and put them on. The second step is to nearly make sure you feel stupid in them."
"If you put them on and you feel too comfortable, then you didn't push it out enough," he explains, promising that pieces that initially feel too 'out there' will become every day staples over time.
Creating fashion content on TikTok since 2020, Lenehan's street style and dry sense of humour have garnered him a strong fanbase (as well as some trolls), with videos documenting the evolution of his eye-catching looks.
A recent video, which saw the Dubliner style his girlfriend's skirt on himself, amassed over 800k views. All too aware of the kind of reactions he was likely to get, though, he knowingly captioned the clip: "Comments should be good".
While many praised his styling abilities, as well as his willingness to play with pieces regardless of gender, others shared hateful comments, many of which questioned Lenehan's sexuality.
In response, the content creator found a "beautiful little number from Dunnes Stores" in his mam's wardrobe to try on.
"There's always going to be that group of people that give you stick," he explains. "No matter if it's the trendiest thing in the world or not, there's still going to be that core group of people who will just latch onto it, especially on TikTok, because it's so easy to just throw a comment in."
Homophobic comments are often rampant in Lenehan's comment section, but he has yet to hear how wearing clothes has any ties to sexuality.
"It's crazy, I'll literally have my girlfriend in the video, but that won't make me straight [to them]," he explains. "There's no way having a girlfriend makes me straight, but if you put on some wide-leg jeans, that's definitely gay?
"The other side of that, as well, is that I know so many gay people who do not dress like me and have no interest in fashion. There's really no correlation, but it's just so easy for people to throw those comments in."
Thankfully, the vast majority of Lenehan's content is well-received, which has led him to meet a wide network of like-minded people and a growing audience. So far, the trolls haven't deterred him.
"I have the awareness that TikTok is just not real life," he says. "The amount of comments I'll get online saying, 'state of that', but I've never had anyone walk up to me on the street and say, 'hey, I just wanted you to know your outfit is poxy'."
"I understand that no matter what I post, there's always going to be people commenting to try and get a reaction. If that's your thing, whatever, but that's why I've started replying to it because we can have a laugh and a bit of back and forth if that's what you really need - the attention of it."
Thinking back on his school days, the visual merchandiser says it's clear that many boys have an interest in fashion, but only seem to be comfortable leaning into certain items like runners or certain jerseys. For some reason, the buck often stops there.
"Back in the day, me and my friends would all be in the same sort of tracksuits, so it was just about what shoes you had on," he reflects.
"If I came out in some new shoes, I'd be strutting around thinking everyone was looking at my brand new, clean shoes," he laughs. "I don't know why it's flex for your shoes, but then it stops."
"There was many a shoe that I had on that I still got stick for," he adds. "Once you start edging anything out in any way, that's when it starts to get a bit ropey."
It was in college that Lenehan began experimenting with his style, and credits London-based, Denmark-born content creator Magnus Ronning as being a major influence at that time.
"I used to watch his YouTube videos and just be trying to stay in the loop of what's going on, what's cool, what's everyone wearing. I kind of watched him progress with his style and saw him swerve away from that more trendier, whatever is in at the minute kind of things."
Now, as a trend-setter himself, the Dubiner insists that the best way to build a wardrobe is through lots of basic pieces like good quality jeans, well-made t-shirts or a classic jacket. From there, the odd statement piece can be thrown in for when you want a pop of colour or texture.
The way to make a look stupidly good, though? Add some accessories.
"Accessories and shoes," he says. "I can't make my decision [on an outfit] until I have my shoes on, my necklace, my earrings, rings - any sort of thing that will give it a bit more layer to it. Small bits like a bit of jewellery can just take it up to look a bit more put together."

Dee Devlin posts on social media for first time since McGregor punch incident
Dee Devlin has taken to social media for the first time since Conor McGregor was involved in an alleged incident at a nightclub in Ibiza. The UFC star's fiancée shared a number of photos on her Instagram story that McGregor had posted on his own social media account. They show the couple and their children enjoying the sunshine on holiday. Some of the images show them enjoying a meal, while others show them making their way to McGregor's luxury yacht, which is understood to be currently off the coast of Majorca, where the Dubliner met Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers in recent days. Taking to social media on Friday evening, McGregor shared a snap of himself with the Hoops boss, who was holding a baby in the picture. "LEGENDARY DOUBLE CHAMP LINK UP! NEXT YEAR, TREBLE! GOD IS GREAT! @CelticFC @ufc Congrats to the Rodgers family on the new addition to their family," McGregor wrote. Another image showed the couple cycling on bikes, while Devlin was all smiles as she enjoyed a glass of red wine. The Sun released footage during the week that allegedly showed the Dubliner appearing to peer down to address an unidentified man in the middle of the dancefloor at Pacha nightclub. Moments later, the former two-weight UFC champion appeared to throw two punches. The man hit the deck, and eyewitnesses have since come forward to have their say on the alleged incident. One person - who saw the incident unfold - claimed there did not appear to be any consequences for McGregor. "The guy seemed to fall to the floor, and his mates came to pick him up and get him away," he told The Sun. "There [didn't appear to be any] consequences for Conor." Another said: "About five people fell to the floor as the guy stumbled back. It was a bit like bowling pins, but the guy was really shaken." They added: "About a minute later, the bouncers came and got him on the back and took him out of the club." "It was right before close anyway," they continued. "There was no messing around; they just removed him. Conor left through the garden a bit later; he didn't look very happy." The incident occurred just hours after McGregor was spotted on the island with Katie Price. The MMA superstar was seen in red shorts, a cap, and sunglasses, enjoying a cigar. Price shared an Instagram photo with McGregor with the caption: "You legend," while McGregor gave her a nod in his story, writing: "Forever." Spurs' player Kevin Danso also posted a picture with the former featherweight and lightweight UFC champion on his social media. McGregor later updated his social media, writing on X: "You won't speak bad about my country and its people and that's ever. Vote McGregor." He later showed off some snaps on Instagram, including one with a group of lads and another where he's standing under a picture of Al Pacino from the famed 1983 film Scarface. This wasn't McGregor's first rowdy incident at an Ibiza shindig. Back when he turned 34, three years ago, he stomped on a punter's hat after it was thrown to him for an autograph. McGregor gave the person a mock thumbs up and then hurled jibes their way. McGregor last stepped into the Octagon in 2021 for a tussle with Dustin Poirier, his longstanding adversary. He eyed a UFC comeback against Michael Chandler last year but injuries obtained during training put a pin in those plans. It's still uncertain whether he'll return to competitive action. However, he's been dropping hints about a potential comeback by posting numerous training videos in recent weeks.

We bought an abandoned Italian mansion for half of the asking price, it looks like a palace but there's a major downside
A COUPLE shared a glimpse into the abandoned Italian mansion they purchased for less than half the asking price. And while the stunning property was definitely a steal, they revealed one major downside to their plans. 2 TikTok user Jordan Kamelleri showed his followers the Italian mansion he purchased with his partner Credit: Tiktok/@jordankamelleri TikTok user Jordan Kamelleri ( Their latest purchase is an "abandoned Italian palace" which hasn't been inhabited in 40 years. The couple have been documenting their rennovation work on the 14-bedroom space, amassing eight million views on one of their "When I was younger, I would have dreamed of a place like this," Jordan told his followers, revealing that features such as the property's armoury immediately sold him. Read More On Mansions Now, the pair plan to convert the They have been working to renovate various properties together since 2018, eventually leading them to their most restoration yet. Their new estate was built sometime in the 1500s and has over 21,500 square feet of living space. With years of experience navigating Italy's real estate market, the couple were able to negotiate the purchase price down to roughly half the original listing. Most read in Fabulous They revealed that they ultimately paid the equivalent of £557,000 for the property, plus additional fees and taxes. The pair are now focused on clearing out the vast spaces and salvaging what they can. Inside Ireland's 'magical' Disney castle with fairytale tower on sale for €7.5MILLION and it's minutes from the beach However, the long-abandoned property comes with one major drawback. They revealed that they have had to deal with "decades of decay" in their efforts to do up the space. But there are significantly more pros than cons with this property, as well as being a steal with magnificent views of the Italian countryside, it remarkably also has functional plumbing. While the current plan is to convert the space into a private property, the couple are remaining flexible and allowing for the possibility of opening one wing to guests as a vacation rental. They added that they are also considering opening parts of the palace for events such as weddings. 5 Tips to Get on The Property Ladder Saving for your first property is tough, but it is possible. Here are a few steps for first-time buyers. 1. Cut back on luxuries and start saving Consistent monthly saving is the best way to accumulate enough money to get on the ladder, for a deposit and purchase fees. To do this, you need to take a look at your monthly outgoings and think about what can be cut out - holidays, new clothes, weekly takeaway. Using a savings calculator can help you to establish how long you will need to save for a deposit. Based on your income, you can figure out a realistic amount to save each month. 2. Have a realistic property search Set a budget for the property price you would like to buy, and think realistically about the location and size of your property. While we all may want that house with a view or extra bedroom, can you afford it? 3. Research Help To Buy and Shared Ownership schemes The government has introduced a few ways to help first-time-buyers get on the property ladder and they're great for those on lower incomes or to buy a property in more expensive areas like London. 4. Consider buying with another person Investing with somebody else you know is a sure way to get onto the property ladder. You only need to save half the amount you would otherwise, so you can work towards getting your property sooner. You can invest with a friend, family or partner. Naturally, it is a big step and a huge commitment so be open and honest about what you expect from living together — if you haven't already. 5. Talk to a mortgage broker and get your documents in order A mortgage broker can tell you exactly how much you can borrow for a mortgage, what you will need to pay monthly and in upfront costs. The vast property has an array of indoor-outdoor spaces, a favourite feature for the couple. These include several verandas, loggias, and panoramic atriums offering exposure to the Italian sun throughout the day. TikTok users shared their thoughts on the stunning property in the comments section. "This has SO MUCH potential as not only a home but also a wedding venue," wrote one viewer. "I've never been so jealous in my entire life," said another impressed follower. "People are really out there living my dream," commented a third person. 2 The couple revealed that the mansion had 'decades of decay' after being left empty for 40 years Credit: Tiktok/@jordankamelleri
