CM Gupta launches ‘Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan' to make city Divyang-friendly
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday held a meeting to improve accessibility in sports, education, and public services for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the national capital.
The CM said that under the 'Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan', all government buildings and sports stadiums in the city will be made Divyang-friendly. She said the government is committed to ensuring that no one is excluded from society because of any disability. She explained that the campaign will not only raise awareness and promote inclusive spaces, but also carry out upgrades in public and institutional buildings to make them accessible. The goal is to transform Delhi into a scalable and replicable model of accessibility and inclusion.
She added that the Accessible India Campaign aims to ensure accessibility in infrastructure, transport, and digital services for PwDs. To support this national vision at the city level, the Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan has been launched to turn Delhi into India's first 'Purple City' — a symbol of urban accessibility and inclusion.
The campaign will follow the 'Sarkar, Samaj, Bazaar' model — involving government agencies, local communities including all 21 disability categories and senior citizens, and CSR partners to develop cost-effective and sustainable solutions.
The chief minister said the initiative is being led by IDEA (Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association), which works for employment, entrepreneurship, and accessibility for PwDs. The CM also discussed plans for organising a 'Purple Fest' to promote positive thinking and awareness about the abilities and rights of Persons with Disabilities. She directed officials to prepare a detailed plan for the event.
She reiterated that all public buildings and stadiums will have ramps, lifts, Braille signage, wheelchair access, and audio-visual aids. Special schemes will also be launched to support PwDs in sports, education, and public services.

Speaking to the media ahead of International Yoga Day, she said, "Tomorrow I will practice Yoga on the banks of Yamuna... Tomorrow will be celebrated like a festival in many places in Delhi... The Delhi government will celebrate this International Yoga Day with great enthusiasm." Earlier in the day, she said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Yoga Day recognised on the world stage so that every country in the world is adopting Yoga with great affection today. Addressing an event at a Yoga, Meditation, and Medical Camp in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh ahead of International Yoga Day tomorrow, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, "PM Modi got Yoga recognised on the world stage in such a way that every country in the world is adopting Yoga with great affection today... India will be able to prosper only if it remains healthy." As India is gearing up to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21, the government is organising a multitude of events nationwide to mark the occasion with "Yoga for One Earth, One Health" as this year's theme.

Delhi Chief Minister Launches Song Ahead Of International Yoga Day 2025
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday, a day before International Yoga Day, launched a song on yoga sung by music composer Amit Trivedi. Addressing a press conference, Ms Gupta said her ministerial colleagues and the BJP MLAs will participate in yoga activities on Saturday. "Official programmes will be held at 11 places. I will be participating in the Yoga programme in Sonia Vihar on Yamuna bank. There will be programmes at Thyagraj Stadium, Chhatrasal Stadium, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Cricket ground in Dwarka Sector 6, among others," she said. Ms Gupta praised the song, saying its lyrics convey the feeling of a "Yogmay Dilli" and its video showcases the tourist places in the national capital. "There are some symbolic places associated with Delhi. Now, new tourist places have come up in Delhi. Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi, Kartavya Path, PM Sanghrahalaya, Baansera, Asita, Vasudev Ghat. The song depicts the iconic tourist places along with the new ones," she said. The BJP leader said that yoga is a "way of life" and stressed everyone should follow it. She said she is often asked whether she wants to make Delhi like London or Paris. "But I say I want to make Delhi like Delhi." Ms Gupta, in the conference, also criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party dispensation, saying it never organised any Yoga Day events. "They used to see Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi's association with it and had a problem with Yoga Day. They never organised any event," she said.

Delhi govt considers studying Dharavi model for slum redevelopment
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said Delhi govt is considering studying Mumbai's Dharavi model for slum redevelopment in the national capital. Gupta also claimed that some people were spreading misinformation regarding the demolition of slum clusters in Delhi. "If you construct a house near a railway line, the chief minister will not save you. I urge people to think about safety and security. If a railway accident happens or someone dies on railway tracks, who will be responsible?" she said. Gupta said that demolishing houses was not her govt's aim. "But it should not happen that we keep on giving homes and people do not vacate slums," she added. The CM said her govt is likely to study the Dharavi model for the redevelopment of 675 slum clusters in Delhi. When asked about the anti-corruption branch's summons to former Delhi minister Manish Sisodia in the classroom construction case, she said: "Everyone will have to face the music. Arvind Kejriwal will also have to return from Punjab. We do not want fugitive leaders." Sisodia appeared before the ACB for questioning on Friday. She directed all officials to complete the work within the stipulated deadlines and with high-quality standards. The chief minister said that the objective of her govt was not just to carry out construction work but to improve the lives of citizens through every initiative. She said that the ongoing development projects were strong steps towards realising the vision of a "Viksit Dilli". The chief minister said that drainage, sewer, road and green infrastructure work are under way in various parts of the constituency, including Haiderpur, Ambedkar Colony and Shalimar village. Notably, these include the construction of central verge crash barriers from Prembari Bridge to Kasturba Polytechnic, Pitampura, as well as the construction of boundary walls from Singhpur Canal to Ring Road, at the vacant land adjacent to Kasturba Polytechnic, and near Singalpur village. These border infrastructure projects have a combined estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh. The boundary wall from Shalimar Chowk to near Fortis Hospital in BB Block is being raised at a cost of Rs 12 lakh. A new pump room is also being constructed near the Max Hospital Road at an estimated cost of Rs 25.5 lakh.
