Christian Pulisic breaks silence on USMNT Gold Cup drama after ‘out of line' jabs by legends

New York Post12-06-2025

Christian Pulisic believes those questioning his commitment to the U.S. Men's National Team are 'way out of line.'
The star winger/midfielder has faced blowback from USMNT legends Landon Donovan and Tim Howard for his choice to skip the upcoming Gold Cup, but he told CBS Sports Golazo's 'Call It What You Want' show Thursday that he 'sticks with his decision' — regardless of what his childhood idols might think.
'It's tough, especially when some of them as well even privately, the way they talk to me and clearly want to show support and be a friend and everything, and then it goes and they say something slightly different publicly,' Pulisic said. 'Does it hurt me, am I surprised by it? Not really.'
'To question my commitment, especially towards the national team, in my opinion, that's way out of line.'
After playing a nine-month season with AC Milan, Pulisic asked USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino to be left off the roster for the Gold Cup.
'Towards the second half and towards the end of the season, my body just started talking to me and my mind and I started to think what is gonna be best for me leading into next year and going into the World Cup?' Pulisic explained on the podcast. 'And was that to play eight more games and then get no rest at all, go straight into preseason, and then grind another year and go straight into the World Cup? That's not what I felt was best for my body.'

Pulisic said he did ask the coaching staff to play in the USMNT's two recent friendlies — against Turkey (June 7) and Switzerland (June 10) — but the coaches declined, opting for roster continuity heading into the Gold Cup.
'I fully respect that,' Pulisic said. 'I didn't understand it, but it is what it is.'
Donovan had indirectly criticized Pulisic on Fox Sports over the weekend during the UEFA Nations League final won by Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal team, saying: 'I can't help but think about our guys on vacation not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's pissing me off.'

Howard, on the May 28 episode of the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, raised concerns that Pochettino would 'not know what his best team is made of in the most difficult moments' with key players like Pulisic skipping the Gold Cup.
Pulisic's father, Mark, mocked Donovan by posting a screengrab of him asking ChatGPT about Donovan's sabbatical in 2012-13.
The USMNT's Gold Cup roster will also be missing Antonee Robinson (knee surgery), and Weston McKinnie, Gio Reyna and Timothy Weah, who are all playing in the upcoming Club World Cup.

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino 'jealous' about Juventus White House visit

ARLINGTON, Texas — U.S. men's national team coach Mauricio Pochettino said he was 'jealous' to see Juventus and not the U.S. invited to the White House with both the Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup soccer tournaments playing out simultaneously in the country. At a press conference at AT&T Stadium ahead of Sunday's Gold Cup group finale against Haiti, U.S. center back Chris Richards was asked if he saw teammates Weston McKennie and Tim Ream at the Oval Office with Juventus. As he started his answer, Pochettino interrupted with a smile joking that they were 'jealous.' Advertisement 'Jealous we didn't receive an invitation,' Pochettino said. 'The national team is playing here and it was Juventus there, no?' 'A little bit far from the White House,' Richards responded, with a smile. 'Maybe we will have luck and they will invite [us] one day for sure,' Pochettino said. Richards, who plays professionally in England with Crystal Palace, then continued his answer. 'I think that's one of the things that makes America beautiful is that we can have different opinions, but still be united,' he said. 'And I think in this tough political time, there's a lot of stuff going on in the Middle East, things like that, but I think one thing that we can do is kind of give hope to people. That's all we can do at this point. 'We're not politicians for a reason. So I think whenever we can give hope, whether that's by winning games or just kind of showing a united front, I think that's what we need to do.' McKennie and Weah were part of a delegation of Juventus players, coaches and dignitaries invited to the White House along with FIFA president Gianni Infantino ahead of their Club World Cup game in Washington D.C. on June 18. Over the course of a 16-minute appearance, the group stood behind Trump as the U.S. president Donald Trump discussed a possible attack on Iran, whether the U.S. Civil War could have been avoided and his administration's travel bans. He also quizzed them on whether a woman could get into their team. Weah seemed to shrug and say, 'Yeah.' Weah was later asked about the visit. 'It was all a surprise to me, honestly — they told us that we have to go and I had no choice but to go,' Weah said after Juventus' 5-0 win over Al Ain. 'I was caught by surprise, honestly. It was a bit weird. When he started talking about the politics with Iran and everything, it's kind of like, I just want to play football man.' Advertisement Infantino posed for photographs with President Trump and presented him with a FIFA Club World Cup jersey as part of the event. The FIFA president has a cozy relationship with Trump, visiting the White House several times and also accompanying him on a trip to Saudi Arabia and Qatar in May. The U.S. plays Haiti on Sunday in its group finale. The team has already advanced to the quarterfinals, but can secure first place in the group with a positive result.

United States forward Haji Wright Injures Achilles, Will Miss Rest of Gold Cup

United States forward Haji Wright will miss the rest of the CONCACAF Gold Cup because of an injured left Achilles. A 27-year-old from Los Angeles, Wright scored in the 84th minute of last weekend's opening 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, 11 minutes after entering. He did not play in Thursday's 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Soccer Federation said Saturday he will return to Coventry City for evaluation and treatment. He cannot be replaced on the tournament roster. The U.S., which has already clinched a quarterfinals berth, plays Haiti on Sunday (7 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app) in the Americans' group stage finale. Reporting by The Associated Press.
