Gold Cup: USA beats Haiti to stay unbeaten, coach wowed by Tillman

American midfielder Malik Tillman scored in the 10th minute of a win over Haiti in the Gold Cup group stage Sunday in Arlington, Texas. Photo by Dustin Safranek/EPA-EFE June 23 (UPI) -- Malik Tillman drew first blood before Patrick Agyemang played hero with a 75th minute game-winner to lead the United States Men's National Team past Haiti, securing a perfect 3-0 record in the Gold Cup group stage. Brenden Aaronson and John Tolkin logged assists in the 2-1 victory Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Americans outshot the Haitians 18-8, dominated possession 65% to 34.2% and held a 606-310 edge in passes. "Overall it was a good performance," U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. "I think we were not a clinic with the chances that we had. I think we should have scored more." Pochettino, who is now 8-5 as coach of the Americans, said his players overcame doubt from an early error to secure the win and group-stage crown. That miscue came in the 19th minute, when a turnover from goalie Matt Freese led to an immediate equalizer. "We scored and then had an accident that we conceded a goal," Pochettino said. "I think that created a little bit of doubt in us. I think it was tough to deal with that. But I think overall the performance was good in the first half. "The second half was a little bit better." The Americans' initial attack was denied during the game's first scoring sequence. Aaronson eventually regained control of the ball after his first shot was denied. The veteran winger then got the ball on his right foot and sliced a cross toward the far post. Tillman hovered into the area and finished the play with a header, which beat Haitian goalie Johny Placide. The 10th-minute score was the third of the tournament for the American center midfielder. "Malik, it is difficult to define him," Pochettino said of Tillman. "What a player that is showing all of his talent and capacity. .... What a talented player. So pleased with him. "He is a lovely guy. He started to find himself. When he can show it, it is welcome. I think the team is much better when he is involved in the game." The elation from the Tillman score lasted less than nine minutes, with the Haitians capitalizing on the Americans' 19th-minute error for their equalizer. Center back Tim Ream started that sequence when he passed back to Freese. The American goalie then mishit a short pass to his left, kicking the ball directly to Haitian winger Louicius Don Deedson. Louicius proceeded to finish with a left-footed shot just inside the far post. The Americans manufactured several more chances, but went into the second half tied with their visitors. They appeared to earn another lead in the 64th minute, but that score was negated because Tillman hit the ball into the net with his arm. Agyemang eventually netted the game-winner by beating Placide in the 75th minute. Tolkin sparked that score with a pass from behind midfield. Agyemang tracked down the long feed from the American left back, tapped the ball around Placide at the top of the box and used his left boot to calmly ground a shot into the right side of the net. The American defense held up over the remainder of regulation to secure the group-stage title. The U.S. men will take on Costa Rica in a Gold Cup quarterfinal at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The winner will play in a semifinal at 6 p.m. July 2 in St. Louis. The Gold Cup final will be held at 6 p.m. July 6 in Houston.

Did Valtteri Bottas Just Sign With Cadillac F1 Team? Driver Drops Big Hint

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Mercedes Formula One reserve driver Valtteri Bottas has dropped a big hint of his potential move to the Cadillac F1 team in its debut year in 2026. Bottas rejoined Mercedes after ending his F1 journey with the Sauber team at the end of last year. The Cadillac F1 team is all set to enter the F1 grid next year and preparations have been ongoing in full swing. Cadillac's arrival syncs with the sport's entry into a new era of regulations, where cars will be powered by an equal ratio of electric power and internal combustion on sustainable fuels. While Bottas failed to secure a full-time seat for 2025, he has been eyeing several opportunities to return to the grid. However, Cadillac has remained tight-lipped about the drivers it has shortlisted for next year. Bottas and former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez were rumored to be in talks with the American outfit and now, Bottas' most recent post on X has raised eyebrows. Valtteri Bottas of Finland and Mercedes walks in the paddock during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 16, 2025 in Imola, Italy. Valtteri Bottas of Finland and Mercedes walks in the paddock during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 16, 2025 in Imola, Finnish driver was recorded approaching a Cadillac SUV, with the cameraman pointing at the seat saying "That's a nice seat!" Impressed, Bottas affirmed as he touched the seat, prompting the cameraman to point out that there are two seats. Bottas then asked if "they're both free." When he was asked if he wanted to sit in there, Bottas replied saying "not yet." Do we like this seat? — Valtteri Bottas (@ValtteriBottas) June 23, 2025 The video could also be a subtle hint from Bottas to his fans that though no deal has been signed yet, talks are underway and a potential signing announcement could be made in the future. Cadillac F1 team principal Graeme Lowdon revealed in April that the new outfit is considering a veteran driver and acknowledged that the team has spoken to "seven or eight drivers." Bottas revealed why Cadillac was an ideal team for a driver like him, considering it was starting everything from scratch. Newsweek Sports reported his comments: "I think they have a few drivers on the list. I would imagine my experience will help because now I've raced in three different teams, with one of the teams having mega success. With Williams as well, we had some great results, so I hope I'm in a good position. "I know my timeline, when I want to know about next year and what plans I need to make, which I think is more or less August, which is a pretty good target for that, and hopefully, we'll hear something more soon. "For me, I actually see a very interesting project, something new to F1, an American team with maybe a different view to the sport. "If I were there as a driver, it would be very interesting because you can start from scratch. "The team starts from zero. You could actually make a big influence on certain things, which direction to go, and that would be very motivating and rewarding when the success comes. "I think the rule change is always a good point to jump in because you just never know, if you suddenly get it right, you might actually be doing really well from the get-go."

Masters Winner Sounds Off on Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup Hopes

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Golf fans eagerly await the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, which is less than 100 days away. Team USA was embarrassed two years ago in Rome and will look to avenge that loss. The loss prompted a switch at captain, with Keegan Bradley accepting the role. One of the biggest talking points had been whether Bradley would become the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. On Sunday, Bradley pulled off an amazing comeback to win the Travelers Championship. While doing so, he showed grit, pure emotion, and the clutch gene, all things a captain typically looks for in choosing players. (Photo by) MoreAfter the win, CBS Sports analyst and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman chimed in on the topic. "You can not even start an argument with me trying to explain that he [Keegan Bradley] is not one of the 12 best American golfers in the world. In my opinion, he is one of the top six or seven." "You can not even start an argument with me trying to explain that [Keegan Bradley] is not one of the 12 best American golfers in the world. In my opinion, he is one of the Top 6 or 7."@TrevorImmelman discusses the possibility of Keegan Bradley being Captain and playing for… — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) June 22, 2025 Bradley previously disclosed that he would only play if he were to automatically qualify. In order to do that, he would have to finish in the top six of the American Ryder Cup standings. Entering the week, the New England native was 17th in the Ryder Cup rankings. Following Sunday's victory, he is projected to move into ninth. With the top six automatically qualifying, that leaves six spots for the captain to decide upon. He is surrounded by players such as Patrick Cantlay, Ben Griffin, Andrew Novak, Brian Harman, Harris English, and Maverick McNealy. Of those players, Bradley is the most distinguished with eight PGA Tour victories. Only he and Harman have won a major championship. But knowing the momentum and passion that the European squad will bring to New York, Bradley might make the most sense. What do you think? Should Keegan select himself if he doesn't already qualify?
