Q2 Stadium to host three Gold Cup matches
Austin's Q2 Stadium will host three matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament to crown the best men's national soccer team in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Driving the news: The three-week biennial tournament kicked off over the weekend.
Austin hosts its first match Thursday, as the U.S. takes on Saudi Arabia, in a group that includes Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. (Yesterday the U.S. defeated Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 and Saudi Arabia beat Haiti 1-0, in matches played in California.)
Tickets, as of yesterday, start at $80.
Q2 also is hosting Guatemala-Panama (Friday) and Panama-Jamaica (June 24).
The intrigue: Saudi Arabia ... checks map... is not on this side of the globe.

If either team were to lose this match, they would effectively be eliminated from contention after both failed to gain any points during their Gold Cup openers. Panama and Guatemala both received maximum points for their efforts in their first matches, putting them in a prime position to advance. Jordan Leborgne and Florian David both scored for Guadeloupe against Panama, but unfortunately, they allowed five goals, which was too much to overcome. Jamaica put up a better fight against Guatemala, losing by only one point, but they were unable to get on the board and must bring their offense to the fight in this one, or they will be heading home early. USMNT 1-0 Saudi Arabia: Yanks grind out win to advance to Gold Cup knockouts
The USMNT is through to the knockout rounds of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup after beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. MORE — Pochettino hits back at Pulisic: 'I'm the head coach' Mauricio Pochettino's side didn't score nearly the number of goals (1, compared to 5), or have nearly the same number of chances (5 shots, compared to 21), as they did in their opener against Trinidad & Tobago, but the Yanks still improved to two wins from two games in Group D. The breakthrough didn't come until shortly after the hour mark, but what a moment of individual quality it was from Sebastian Berhalter to set up Chris Richards for his 2nd USMNT goal in the 63rd minute. Berhalter stepped up to a free kick roughly 35 yards out and couldn't have placed his service into the penalty area any better had he picked the ball up and walked it into the box himself. Richards' run was timed inch-perfect and all he had to do was get a foot on the ball seven yards out from goal to turn it home. That would actually be the final shot attempted in the game as the USMNT sat deeper to defend and looked to make the most of counter-attacking opportunities from that point forward. The midfield duo played a part in each of the USMNT's first three goals, all in the first half, as they make their case not only for a spot on the 2026 World Cup but perhaps a place in the starting lineup — even when Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie are back in the mix. USMNT focus, team news What's great about the USMNT's performance against T&T is that they scored five goals (on a very healthy 3.48 xG) while holding 70 percent of possession in the game. Almost regardless of opponent, the A-team has too often struggled to generate chances (and score them) when the opposition puts five defenders and four midfielders behind the ball. What's even better is that only four of their 21 shots were taken from outside the box, meaning they worked the ball deep into the penalty area (only 8 shots outside 12 yards) and didn't settle for speculative long-range attempts. Saudi Arabia focus, team news Saudi Arabia, the lone team in the tournament invited as a guest, beat Haiti 1-0 in their Group D opener. Al-Ittihad striker Saleh Al-Shehri scored from the penalty spot in the 21st minute. Al-Shehri is the only player in the Arabian Falcons' current squad with double-digit international goals (17). USMNT vs Saudi Arabia prediction The Saudis were quite poor with their limited possession (43 percent) against 83rd-ranked Haiti and will likely have even less to work with against the Yanks. Patience will be key again, but Luna will deliver the goods again. USMNT 3-1 Saudi Arabia.

‘Setting the tone': Joe Montemurro opts for mix of experience and potential with first Matildas squad

Alex Chidiac has been recalled into the Matildas squad to face Slovenia and Panama is a series of friendlies in Australia. Photograph: Darren Pateman/AAP Joe Montemurro will use the start of his tenure to test the depth of Australian women's football, after the new Matildas coach announced an extended squad for four friendlies that lacks star power and is awash with fresh and fringe faces. Continuing the experimentation of interim coach Tom Sermanni, nearly half of the 33 players called up by Montemurro for the series against Slovenia and Panama have fewer than 10 caps. Advertisement Related: Matildas usher in new era after key interim role is filled perfectly by Tom Sermanni | Joey Lynch Notable absences include stand-in captain Steph Catley and forward powerhouse Caitlin Foord, who are taking personal leave. Tameka Yallop is out with injury, Katrina Gorry remains on leave and Sam Kerr's return to playing remains a mystery. Mary Fowler's extended absence also continues as she recovers from an ACL injury sustained during Manchester City's FA Women's Cup semi-final in April. Along with six uncapped players – including Young Matildas Grace Kuilamo and Adriana Taranto, who have received their first senior call-ups – Montemurro has brought back into the fold a handful of experienced Matildas who have been on the fringe in recent years. Advertisement Dynamic midfielder Alex Chidiac returns off the back of a successful A-League Women season with Melbourne Victory after which she received the Julie Dolan medal for best player in the league. Chidiac most recently stepped out in the green and gold for some token minutes during the 2023 Women's World Cup. Chloe Berryhill (nee Logarzo) and Emily Gielnik will also join the squad after returns to form and fitness. Berryhill's long-awaited return to the national team was cut short in December last year when she suffered a concussion in the 27th minute. Montemurro said the long international window allows him to lay the groundwork for the major tournaments on the horizon, chiefly the home 2026 Women's Asian Cup and the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. 'This window is about setting the tone,' he said. 'We're laying the foundations for the next phase of our journey as we build relationships, create an understanding of our style of play, and enhance the high-performance environment that enables our players to thrive. Advertisement 'We wanted to use this window not just to prepare for the matches, but to really explore the talent that's coming through.' Holly McNamara, Jamilla Rankin, Natasha Prior, Bryleeh Henry, Winonah Heatley and Jessika Nash – all relatively new to the national set-up – will have another chance to shine with senior players out of the mix. One exception though is breakout star and debutant from the Argentina series Kahli Johnson who has been ruled out with an injury she picked up in the second match. Ellie Carpenter is back after taking a short break to get married, and goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, midfielder Hayley Raso and forward Sharn Freier have all recovered from injury. The former Lyon and Arsenal coach said his selections represent a good balance of experience and potential. Advertisement 'Slovenia and Panama have been strategically scheduled to give us the right mix of conditions and opposition as we begin this phase,' he said. 'With the blend of players in this extended squad, these fixtures allow us to explore tactical ideas, build cohesion, and gradually shape the way we want to play moving into the next cycle.' Not all players in the extended squad will be available for both the Slovenia and Panama series.
