Senate approves anti-POGO bill on final reading

The Senate on Monday approved on third and final reading a bill on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) in the country.

It was authored by Senators Sherwin Gatchalian, Bong Go, Raffy Tulfo, Pia Cayetano, Grace Poe, and Risa Hontiveros.
The bill declared offshore gaming operations in the Philippines as unlawful.
It was approved on second reading last June 4.
Under the bill, violators may face imprisonment of not less than six years to up to 12 years and be fined at least P300,000.
The bill also states that if the violator is a public official or employee, the maximum penalty will be imposed.
In 2024, authorities discovered some POGO hubs engaging in human trafficking and physical and sexual abuse. This includes POGO hubs in Bambam, Tarlac, and Porac, Pampanga.
This led to the arrest of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, also identified as Guo Hua Ping, for alleged involvement in the illegal activities of a POGO hub in her town. –NB, GMA Integrated News

21 PH gov't officials stranded in Israel arrive in PH

The 21 Filipino government officials who got stranded in Israel amid tensions with Iran arrived in Manila on Saturday morning. The officials — 17 local government officials who attended an agricultural technology training and four dairy industry specialists of the Department of Agriculture — were met at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 by Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla. Of the 17 officials, two were congressmen, nine mayors, four vice mayors, and two regional directors. It was an emotional homecoming for the stranded officials, as seen in a video taken by GMA Integrated News reporter Bea Pinlac. Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss earlier said the 21 Filipinos were attended to by the Israeli government. Robbers punch senior citizen, take P100K cash, jewelry

A 77-year-old senior citizen lost around P100,000 in cash and jewelry to robbers, who also punched her in the face and the leg, in a crime committed in broad daylight in Tondo, Manila. The victim, "Lola Minerva," was on her way home from the market when a man and a woman approached her and talked to her, eventually persuading her to board a car with her assailants. Inside the car, the suspects took away her cash and jewelry, and hurt her. She was dropped in the area of Baseco Compound and left her with P200 for transportation. The victim immediately reported the incident to the barangay for assistance. The barangay official said a portion of the road where the senior citizen passes by was closed that day, which prevented the pedicabs from entering and transporting residents to their homes. The official added that they have heard of the same modus victimizing the elderly who often go to the market.
