The Panthers start a dynasty, and Caitlin Clark gets in a fight

Good morning! Hug a Boston sports fan today?
There was no comeback. No best Stanley Cup Final ever, no dream realized of finally taking a title back to Canada. That is how good the Florida Panthers are, an unstoppably demoralizing force of nature. For it, they now reign as back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.
Seeing Marchand lift the cup on the same night Rafael Devers suited up for the Giants has to be tough for Boston sports fans. More on that in a bit.
With the win, Florida teams now have won four of the last six Stanley Cup titles, just as the hockey gods intended. Is this Panthers team a dynasty? Not by the literal definition, but they are just the third repeat champions of the salary-cap era.
That counts for something. Let's keep moving:
Caitlin Clark, darling of the WNBA, is not afraid of chirping back. We've seen her get in multiple tiffs during her young career, but last night's fracas against Connecticut could be the spiciest. Let's watch the highlight first:
The Fever and Sun got into a scuffle after Caitlin Clark was poked in the eye by Jacy Sheldon.
Afterwards, Marina Mabrey shoved Clark.
Clark, Mabrey and Tina Charles were called for technicals. Sheldon received a flagrant.

Yowza.
Clark scored 20 points in the win, while Sheldon and Mabrey combined for eight points and were a cumulative minus-38. Welp.

Devers: I'll play anywhere
In his introductory Giants news conference yesterday, Rafael Devers said he is open to playing multiple positions with his new club, which is sure to enrage Red Sox fans. Boston traded Devers on Sunday after a rift between player and club, which predominantly centered around Devers' refusal to play first base. To twist the knife more, the Giants have asked Devers to start taking grounders at first — and he's game, apparently. Read his full comments here.

Haliburton pushing to play
Despite what appears to be a serious calf strain, Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton wants to play in a do-or-die Game 6, a source told The Athletic. Haliburton, a superstar in these playoffs, was clearly hobbled by the injury in a lackluster Game 5 performance, and it's already leading to what-if questions for the Pacers about this finals run. Vegas has already accounted for Haliburton's injury, too.
Monahan to be phased out
Despite earlier reports, Jay Monahan's time as PGA Tour commissioner will indeed be coming to a close at the end of next year, making way for new CEO Brian Rolapp, who was officially introduced to players yesterday. Rolapp will take over day-to-day duties this summer from Monahan, who will turn his focus to bigger-picture items. Gabby Herzig was there at Rolapp's first news conference yesterday, and I was tickled to learn Rolapp only plays five to 10 rounds of golf per year. Read her full report here.

Normally this would not be on alert for me, but the Angels have secured at least a split of this four-game series and are just two games under .500. Aaron Judge, meanwhile, has one hit in his last four games and the Yanks have lost five straight. Hm.

There are niche things one thinks about more often than they should. One of mine is the 2018 Nigerian World Cup kit, which I still see out and about today. There's a reason for that: it was a cultural phenomenon the moment it was released online. We have the inside story of how it happened.
By name recognition alone, Michigan freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood is a star. Austin Meek talked to five high school coaches who faced Underwood last year to get a full scouting report.

New York Giants trade prediction sends Kayvon Thibodeaux to NFC contender
The New York Giants face an interesting situation entering the 2025 season as the current regime must have a win-now mindset despite coming off a 3-14 campaign. So many decisions about the future won't be made until the season gets underway and the Giants can look at the direction of the franchise truly. This is especially true when it comes to potential players who may be traded during the upcoming campaign. Throughout the offseason, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux had been the subject of trade talks since it was reported that the Giants were targeting No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter. In a recent article about bold predictions at the NFL trade deadline, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report has the Giants sending Thibodeaux to the Detroit Lions. Still, considering shortcomings elsewhere, trading Thibodeaux to address a larger need would be logical, especially if the team is still alive as the deadline approaches. I get the feeling that will actually be the case, as Russell Wilson could have a redemption season in him thanks in part to the emergence of Malik Nabers. If that's how things go down, we are again looking at Washington, Green Bay and Detroit. In this case, Thibodeaux is the consolation prize because he's not close to as established as Hendrickson. The Lions have more money to spend than the Commanders and may feel the need to at least outbid them here to keep up with the Joneses in the NFC North. If the Giants are still in the hunt to have a competitive record, it will be interesting to see what path they take. They could hold onto Thibodeaux, considering his fifth-year option for 2026 is already exercised. Or they could look to cash out before giving him a new deal. A lot of this depends on the development of Carter as well. If the Penn State product bursts onto the scene and commands more snaps each week as the trade deadline approaches, the Giants may want to consider a deal that involves Thibodeaux. In 2024, Thibodeaux put together a strong campaign despite finishing with only 5.5 sacks. His 42 total pressures were just six fewer than his career-high mark, and he was on pace for 59 total pressures had he played a full season, per Next Gen Stats. Much of this is speculation at this point in the offseason, but once the season arrives, it will be interesting to see what happens with this narrative.

Mark Titus rips ESPN for ruining NBA Finals with too much Stephen A. Smith: ‘This guy's awful'
It's apparently open season on Stephen A. Smith. Barstool's Mark Titus teed off on the polarizing ESPN personality and also ripped the company for making its coverage of the Thunder-Pacers NBA Finals too Smith-centric. 'I would have zero problem with anything Stephen A. Smith is saying or doing if he wasn't on NBA Finals broadcasts,' Titus said on 'Mostly Sports with Mark Titus and Brandon Walker' on Thursday. 'The fact that ESPN has appointed him to be one of the voices you hear when you tune into the NBA Finals, that's the only problem I have. 'You're allowed to talk s–t. … If you try to avoid the Stephen A. bulls–t, and you're like, 'You know what I want to do? I love basketball so I want to watch the two best basketball teams compete for the highest honor in professional basketball.' If you choose to do that, you're going to get Stephen A. in your face. And you're just like, 'God damn, this guy's awful.' I almost forget it because I don't watch all the other s–t he does.' 3 Mark Titus wants less Stephen A. Smith during NBA Finals coverage. @MostlySportsTitusandWalker/YouTube Smith has been a popular punching bag in recent weeks with a seemingly never-ending stream of controversies. Michelle Beadle and Cody Decker ripped him for taking their radio slot at Sirius XM. Kevin Durant, Dave Portnoy and Pacers fan trolled him for playing Solitaire during the NBA Finals, only for Smith to later say, 'Kiss my ass.' And Smith now has gone to war with the city of Memphis and superstar Ja Morant after he claimed free agents don't want to play in Grind City because its unsafe. 3 Stephen A. Smith working during an NBA Finals broadcast. NBAE via Getty Images Former ESPN host Jason Fitz ripped Smith for those remarks, while Morant questioned why Memphis is being discussed during the Finals. The Memphis comments provided the entry point for Titus and his co-host, Brandon Walker, to riff on Smith. 'Stephen A. has appointed himself God? Is he God now?' Walker said. Titus responded: 'Yes, he's appointed himself God.' He then said it's 'crazy' how Smith will rip players in a confrontational manner. 'It's not just like him saying it, it's like him threatening,' Titus said. 'He's threatening everybody at all times, it's crazy. It's crazy. It's motherf–king crazy.' 3 Stephen A. Smith is hard to miss on ESPN. NBAE via Getty Images Titus is not the first person to call out ESPN for leaning too much into Smith, with some criticizing the Worldwide Leader for showing him at games and even sometimes his arrival to venues. Even Thursday's Game 6 featured Smith and his daughter, Samantha, getting plenty of screen time ahead of the Pacers fighting to extend their season. Smith will be front and center again Sunday night when the Thunder host the Pacers for Game 7, with Oklahoma City installed as a solid favorite.
