.The spectacle unfolded a month after the first phase of mass hatching on April 10, when millions of
baby turtles
made their way into the sea.
Officials expect the ongoing hatching to continue for another three to four days. "We are trying our best to ensure the safety of baby turtles," said Dibya Shankar Behera, assistant conservator of forests (ACF).A record 6,98,698 Olive Ridleys had nested across a 5-km stretch from Podampeta to Bateswar during the first phase of mass nesting between Feb 16 and 23. Another 2,05,000 turtles laid eggs along the same stretch between March 22 and 27 during the second phase of nesting.Forest officials said the exact number of hatchlings reaching the sea during the first phase could not be counted due to logistical challenges.

Forest officials and local volunteers have stepped up efforts to safeguard the hatchlings."We have fenced the entire area to keep out wild dogs, jackals and hyenas," Behera said, adding that patrolling along the beach is underway to protect the hatchlings from aerial predators such as crows and kites. The area has been declared a no-entry zone to minimise disturbances."Local volunteers collected some of the baby turtles in buckets, as they had strayed from their path and released them into the sea," said Rabindra Nath Sahu, secretary of the Ganjam District Sea Turtle Protection Committee.

Gorewada herbivores get maize bonanza from its in-house farm

Nagpur: Lush green maize fields sway in the pre-monsoon winds on the land owned by the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM), part of a unique experiment to provide herbivores at Gorewada Zoo with nutritious and varied food. Started last year, these in-house farms at Gorewada are meeting part of the herbivores' daily food requirements. Sarika Khot, an ACF-rank official who is currently posted as assistant manager of Gorewada Zoo, said, "Animals are similar to humans when it comes to food; they love variety. And we wanted to not only add to their already varied food but also introduce new items." To revamp the menu for herbivores, officials at Gorewada Zoo took up planting crops on a patch of land adjacent to the zoo's entrance. The current crop, maize, is something that herbivores are relishing. Khot said, "Every morning, a vehicle comes here to harvest fresh maize. Immediately afterwards, it's taken to the herbivore enclosure for feeding. The moment the herbivores see this, they chomp down on it. Whatever we put there is consumed instantly." The current land is being harvested in phases. Khot said, "It's a rotational-based system. You have plantation being done on one patch, then at the next, you will see saplings growing bigger, and finally, the next patch has fully grown crops which are ready for harvest." The fenced-off farm has been made herbivore-proof. Khot said, "Since we have forests all around, deer move around in this range, and they were jumping over six-foot fences. So we dug up a moat-like hole around the fence so that they don't get the platform to propel their jump." Similarly, the base of the fence was reinforced with sand/mud/clay-filled bags as wild boars were breaking in. With all systems in place, the crops are in full bloom. After the success of their unique experiment, Gorewada Zoo officials are set to expand the crop base. Khot said, "The adjoining fields are almost ready, and soon we will begin plantation with new crops."

Gujarat: Chimpanzee exhibit to open at SoU jungle safari to mark World Rainforest Day

The Statue of Unity Jungle Safari and Zoological Park in Ekta Nagar (formerly Kevadia) in Narmada district is all set to open the chimpanzee exhibit to the public on Sunday — to mark the World Rainforest Day on June 22, said officials familiar with the matter. The exhibit will house a male and two female chimpanzees, who had been in quarantine, following their arrival in India from Capital Zoo Wildlife Park in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in February this year. Officials said that a special enclosure for chimpanzees has been created in the Ekta Nagar to replicate their natural tropical habitat of the African forests. According to officials, the three chimpanzees had been quarantined and kept away from immediate public display to help them acclimate to the Indian climate but surroundings were created to allow them to 'experience a sense of their own habitat'. Officials added that the three chimpanzees had 'adapted very well and were at ease' in their new home, based on which the Statue of Unity authorities decided to bring them out for the public display area in the special enclosure created for chimpanzees.

Navy personnel perform yoga on Beach Road and warships at sea

Visakhapatnam: As the sun rose over the RK Beach in Vizag city on Saturday, Sunrise Command (Eastern Naval Command) personnel and their families, along with residents from parts of Andhra Pradesh, came together to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi on their yoga mats, embracing the energy of the sea and sky. Offshore, warships swayed gently with sailors performing yoga on their decks. This demonstrated the Navy's commitment to this year's Yoga Day theme—'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' Over 11,000 naval personnel from the Navy's Eastern Naval Command and their family members participated in the grand celebrations in Vizag city marking the International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21. The naval personnel and their family members occupied around 10 enclosures along the RK Beach stretch , which was the main venue for the event, thus forming an integral part of the historic gathering. In a parallel display at sea, yoga was performed by the uniform personnel on board six Indian naval ships and two ships of the Indian Coast Guard anchored off Visakhapatnam. The impressive maritime line up includes frontline eastern fleet ships and two coast guard offshore patrol vessels.
