Protecting children ‘religious, moral duty of society'

The Muslim Council of Elders, under the chairmanship of Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar, affirmed that safeguarding children and preserving their childhood from exploitation and suffering is a religious, moral, and profound humanitarian obligation shared by societies, institutions, and individuals alike.
On the World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12, the Council declared that addressing child exploitation and forced labour is a collective responsibility and demands unified efforts to develop sound policies, enact stringent laws, ensure social protection and quality education, foster a culture of societal responsibility towards children, and intensify initiatives to combat poverty and ignorance, which rank among the leading causes of child labour.
The Council praised the programmes and initiatives by various nation states and institutions that empower families and promote education, thereby helping curb this grave issue and fostering a safe environment for every child's healthy development.
The Council's statement also emphasised that in Islam, a child is a dignified being entitled to care, education, protection, and growth in a secure and nurturing environment.
Furthermore, the Council underscored the critical role of religious, educational, and media institutions in raising awareness and educating communities to combat this issue, actively shaping a collective consciousness that prioritises child protection which is especially vital in today's world, where wars and conflicts intensify the suffering of countless innocent children.
The Document on Human Fraternity, which was co-signed in 2019 in Abu Dhabi by the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, alongside the late Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church at the time, asserts that children's fundamental rights to family upbringing, nutrition, education, and care constitute a moral duty and responsibility for families and society.
These rights must be upheld, defended, and guaranteed for every child worldwide, without exception.
Additionally, any practice that undermines their dignity or violates their rights must be condemned, and vigilance is required to address the risks and violations they face in any form.

'This document was not merely a declaration of intent,' he said, 'but a moral and philosophical framework transcending religious faiths, establishing a new global ethic that elevates human dignity above all affiliations.' 'We gather today as representatives of our peoples, who, despite their different languages, cultures, and religious traditions, are united by enduring human values — values that safeguard dignity, belief, and the right to live in safety and peace,' Ghobash added. Ghobash also emphasised the symbolic importance of holding the conference in Rome, a city that has long served as a historic centre of human thought and civic development. 'Rome has, for centuries, embodied a dynamic civilisational path where nations interacted in the realms of philosophy, politics, law, citizenship, and pluralism.' The event began in Rome on June 19 and will end on June 21. It is jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Italian Parliament. Ghobash was to spotlight the FNC's role as a platform for advancing parliamentary diplomacy, aimed at building bridges of understanding between nations and cultures. The conference features a high-level session on countering religious hatred based on faith and belief as well as other sessions. The sessions aim to identify challenges at the national, regional, and global levels and produce actionable recommendations to enhance cooperation between parliaments and faith leaders in addressing shared concerns. The FNC delegation will also engage in two dedicated working sessions that will explore the promotion of coexistence and peace, the role of responsible leadership, and lessons learned from the Marrakesh Communiqué, which advocates for the protection of religious minorities and their rights. Separately, Ghobash met Mexican Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña, on the sidelines of the Conference in Rome. During the discussion, both parties emphasised the importance of enhancing parliamentary cooperation through exchange visits and closer coordination on issues of mutual concern. The talks focused on reinforcing the strong and friendly bilateral relations between the UAE and Mexico, which are grounded in mutual understanding across political, economic, and cultural dimensions, supported by the wise leadership of both nations. Ghobash welcomed Fernández Noroña, affirming that the meeting reflects a shared commitment between the FNC and the Mexican Senate to foster constructive parliamentary collaboration and the exchange of best practices. He highlighted the significance of the Interfaith Parliamentary Conference as an international platform for promoting mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, and inter-parliamentary dialogue to support a culture of openness and peace among nations. The meeting also explored ways to expand bilateral cooperation in political, economic, and investment fields, including identifying promising opportunities across priority sectors in both countries' markets. GCC policy dialogue to promote women's leadership in workforce

A policy dialogue on women's economic empowerment concluded in Dubai, with GCC countries backing efforts for joint legal reforms, childcare investment and enhanced knowledge exchange across institutions. Led by the UAE Gender Balance Council and the World Bank, the workshop brought together leaders from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to share strategies aimed at expanding women's participation in the workforce, particularly through support for childcare and maternity policies. The UAE emphasised its initiatives to enhance gender balance in the labour market, Saudi Arabia outlined advances in workforce participation and social insurance for women and Bahrain showcased national upskilling programs and empowerment strategies. A joint brief was presented to guide future cooperation, marking a key step toward building inclusive, opportunity-driven economies across the region. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, said, 'Women's economic empowerment is not simply a policy objective, it is a force for transformation. It strengthens institutions, drives innovation and ensures that progress is inclusive, resilient, and sustainable." Mona Al Marri, Vice President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, highlighted that "regional collaboration drives progress". "By uniting to promote gender balance, we amplify our collective impact and ensure that every woman in the GCC has the chance to contribute to shaping a more inclusive future," she added. Since its establishment in 2015, the Council has led policies, legal reforms and partnerships aimed at embedding gender balance across national institutions and economic systems.
