Japan backs Johor's rise as Asean smart mobility hub, eyes deeper tech, green investment ties

JOHOR BARU, June 19 — Japan has pledged continued support for Johor's transformation into an Asean benchmark for urban mobility by promoting smart transit solutions and cutting-edge transportation technologies.
Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata said the initiative aligns with Johor's rapid economic growth, particularly fuelled by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which is set to position the state as a key regional economic hub.
He said the forthcoming Rapid Transit System, Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS), expected to be completed by late 2026, along with the proposed Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit System (E-ART), are key to improving public transportation in Johor.
By utilising Japan's AI-powered traffic control systems and digitally optimised public transportation networks, Johor could significantly reduce traffic congestion and emerge as a transportation model not just for Malaysia, but for the entire Asean region, he said at the Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025 here Thursday.
Co-organised by Iskandar Investment Bhd and Japan's Nikkei Inc, the two-day Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025 is hosted by the Johor state government with support from the Johor Economic Planning Division, Invest Johor, and the Iskandar Puteri City Council.
He highlighted the strategic potential of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port, both of which are well-positioned to grow as competitive regional logistics hubs and play a larger role in international trade.
He said Japanese stakeholders are eager to collaborate on enhancing operational efficiency and vessel traffic management at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port, aiming to strengthen Johor's role in international trade, generate quality employment, and significantly contribute to regional economic growth.
As Johor continues to emerge as a key destination for data centres, Shikata underscored the significant environmental challenge posed by the high energy demand for cooling, noting that Japan's LNG-based cooling technology offers an environmentally friendly and efficient cooling solution.
'By adopting this technology, the data centres in Johor would significantly improve energy efficiency while reducing their environmental impacts as well as improving operational efficiency,' he said.
'We are also realising that green energy flow from Sarawak to Johor will not only secure a sustainable energy supply but also unlock new green investment opportunities in Malaysia for Japanese companies,' he added.
Shikata said such cooperation is expected to accelerate sustainable economic growth in both Japan and Malaysia, as well as across the Asean region, in line with the vision of the Asean Power Grid actively promoted by Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
'International student exchanges are vital for nurturing talent and future leadership, encouraging joint programmes between Japanese and Johor universities to strengthen bilateral cooperation based on trust and friendship,' he said.
Shikata affirmed Japan's ongoing commitment to strengthening its partnership with Malaysia, stressing that collaboration between both governments and the private sectors in green investment, transportation, and education is crucial to building a brighter and more prosperous future for both nations. — Bernama

Report: Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxis may hit Malaysia, Singapore roads in 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Baidu is planning to launch its Apollo Go robotaxi operations in Malaysia and Singapore as early as this year, Bloomberg reported today. A person familiar with the matter said the move is part of the Chinese tech giant's broader push to extend its global footprint beyond China. They added discussions are ongoing with potential local partners to identify suitable business models for the two markets. 'We are looking at mobility service providers, local taxi companies and third-party fleet operators,' Baidu Chief Executive Robin Li has previously said, describing the company's preference for an 'asset-light approach'. The timing of Baidu's planned expansion coincides with growing momentum in the global autonomous vehicle race. Tesla is set to unveil its Cybercab robotaxi network within days, with CEO Elon Musk betting big on autonomous driving to fuel future growth. Baidu's Apollo Go is among a trio of Chinese robotaxi companies — alongside WeRide and — stepping up efforts to enter markets in the Middle East, Europe, and South-east Asia. The Apollo Go service has already made strides at home. It has deployed more than 1,000 autonomous vehicles worldwide, mostly in China, and notched 11 million rides as of the first quarter of 2025. That puts it ahead of US rival Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s self-driving unit, which reported 10 million paid rides as of May. Beyond South-east Asia, Baidu is also eyeing new frontiers in Europe and Turkey. It has been in talks with PostAuto, a subsidiary of Swiss Post, to introduce robotaxis in Switzerland. Baidu has yet to issue an official statement on its South-east Asia plans.

‘Create opportunities for local farmers': Anwar orders govt to stop using imported food at official events

PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today directed all government departments to cease using imported goods, particularly food, at official events, in a bid to promote local products. Speaking at the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar emphasised that using local produce will not only bolster the local economy but will also open wider opportunities for local farmers to market their goods. 'If every government department follows this directive, it will create more opportunities for our farmers to supply local food ingredients,' he said. The Prime Minister cited neighbouring countries as examples, noting their firm commitment to using local food products at all official functions. 'In Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, I've never been served imported food at any government-hosted official event. It's automatic for them to ensure only local food is served,' he remarked. Anwar also criticised the continued preference by some parties for imported food despite the government's clear stance. Calling the practice inconsistent with efforts to empower the local economy, he urged civil servants and officials to be more mindful of the need to support homegrown produce. — Bernama

Malaysia's trade remains on growth trend in May

KUALA LUMPUR: While overall trade value remained on the rise, Malaysia's exports were a slight 1.1% lower year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM126.62bil in May 2025, owing to a decrease in outbound shipments of manufactured and mining goods. Manufacturing exports fell a marginal 0.3% y-o-y to RM110.01bil owing to a drop in shipments of products related to petroleum, chemicals as well as iron and steel, said the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) in its latest trade report. The decline in manufacturing exports, however, was cushioned by the robust shipments of electronic and electrical (E&E) products, machinery, equipment and parts as well as processed food. Malaysia's exports of mining goods fell 23.6% y-o-y to RM5.86bil on lower export volume of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as crude petroleum following the decrease in export volumes and prices. This was partially mitigated by an increase in exports of petroleum condensates and other petroleum oils. Meanwhile, exports of agricultural goods increased 8.3% y-o-y to RM9.81bil on higher exports of palm oil and palm oil-based agriculture products due to higher export volumes and prices. Malaysia's overall trade value in May, however, remained on an upward trajectory, rising 2.6% y-o-y to RM252.48bil, as the country chalked up a higher import value of RM125.86bil, a 6.6% increase from the same month a year ago. Malaysia maintained a trade surplus of RM766.3mil during the month. According to to Miti, exports to Asean trading partners dropped 10.9% y-o-y to RM35.74bil in May on lower demand for petroleum and E&E products. Shipments to China fell 4.3% y-o-y to RM15.05bil, underpinned by lesser exports of LNG, chemicals and chemical products as well as paper and pulp products. In contrast, exports to the US grew by double digits for an eighth consecutive month. The export value rose 16.1% y-o-y to RM18.68bil on robust exports of E&E products, processed food as well as machinery, equipment and parts. On imports, the value of intermediate goods declined 4.4% y-o-y to RM65.13bil due to lower imports of primary fuel and lubricants. Imports of consumption goods also contracted 1.1% y-o-y to RM10.07bil due to lower imports of primary food and beverages, mainly for household consumption. The inbound shipments of capital goods, however, surged 63.7% to RM22.72bil due to higher imports of non-transport capital goods. Over the five month period from January to May 2025, Malaysia's total trade rose 6.2% y-o-y to RM1.23 trillion. Exports rose 5.5% during this period to RM638.48bil while imports expanded 6.9% to RM591.54bil. The cumulative trade surplus stood at RM46.94bil, down 9.4% y-o-y.
