Hockey players to get ₹25,000 per month pocket allowance
The Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) sanctioned a pocket allowance of ₹25,000 to 80 hockey players in the national camp, following a request by the National Federation.
It will be given to 40 men and 40 women, who will be nominated every month by Hockey India.
The Union Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasised the importance of encouraging the hockey players and acknowledging their overall good performances in recent years.
The Minister also explained the elaborate plans to tap talent across the country with the help of technology, to ensure that every talented player gets a chance to hone his or her skills and realise his or her potential.
'Talent identification is a key area. The Government will soon launch a dedicated mobile application as part of the National Talent Repository System (NSRS). Anyone can upload a clip of talented youngsters from their neighbourhood, school, or village, across a wide range of sports disciplines. The videos will be studied by the zonal talent selection committees under the Khelo India scheme. Deserving candidates will be taken into Khelo India centres and given training, sports science support, nutrition guidance and mentorship,' said the Minister.
The Sports Minister stressed that a vast country like India would have potential champions in big numbers, and such talent needed to be spotted and guided for the country to become a sporting powerhouse.

'Yoga is beneficial for everyone, so every Indian should inculcate yoga in their daily routines, not just sportspersons. A fit and healthy nation can only build a Viksit Bharat, as our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has said. What I have noticed is that our Sports Minister is taking out time every week from his busy schedule for fitness-related activities, then we as citizens must also do so. I really like the slogan 'One earth, one health' for today's yogathon and I can say that health is our real wealth,' Rani Rampal said. Race walking Olympian Priyanka Goswami, while giving her best wishes to all the Indian citizens on the International Day of Yoga said: 'I will request each and every citizen of this country to keep themselves fit and healthy both physically and mentally on this 11th International Day of Yoga. For a sport like racewalking, it becomes tough to control your mind for a distance of 30-35 kilometres. Your mind wavers after every kilometre. So, yoga becomes important. Through daily meditation, I try to control my mind. I want to tell the youth that our priority should be to do physical activity and indulge in healthy nutrition and not in drugs, this will only make our nation fitter.' Individuals from different age groups, backgrounds and fitness levels are encouraged to participated in the one-day event that also included meditation and yoga nidra. As part of this collective celebration, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports reaffirmed its shared commitment to the timeless practice of yoga and its enduring relevance in today's world. (ANI)

Hockey players finally get an out-of-pocket allowance after years of waiting
Indian Hockey team New Delhi: For reason unknown, the men and women national campers of Indian hockey weren't entitled to an out-of-pocket allowance (OPA) by the govt under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) over the years. Since the inception of TOPS in Sep 2014, athletes from other disciplines benefitted from the sports ministry's benevolence of monthly stipend to the identified pool of sportspersons but not the hockey players. However, this anomaly was rectified in a recent meeting of the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) here on Thursday. The 156th governing council meeting of the MOC has approved an OPA of Rs 25,000 per month for the national campers of both the men's and women's hockey teams after considering the request of the sport's national federation – Hockey India (HI). The men's team was considered for OPA after winning two back-to-back bronze medals — in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the subsequent Paris Games last year. The team also secured a gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. The women's team finished a creditable fourth in Tokyo. Both the teams are currently playing in the FIH Pro League's European leg.
