Ludhiana: Inaugurated in March, toilets still under renovation in civil hospital
Nearly two months after chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the renovated works at the civil hospital here, few toilets are still far from being functional. The male toilet in the emergency and trauma ward, the toilets outside the labour room and the ones towards the rear of the mother and child section are still being renovated.
There is a single user toilet near the emergency ward's entrance, but it is mostly used by patients and is also occupied. The male attendants of the patients in the emergency or trauma wards either use the toilets in the OPD, but as it closes after OPD hours, or go to the first-floor male ward to the other side of the building.
The renovation had been touted as a very big step towards bringing the hospital on par with corporate hospitals. According to a senior hospital official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, there was no deadline for the completion of renovation work of these toilets.
The renovation work was led by Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora, who is also AAP's candidate for the upcoming Ludhiana West bypolls, under the MPLAD scheme. The CM had inaugurated the renovations on March 18 in an elaborate event.
Civil hospital's senior medical officer Dr Harpreet Singh said, 'The toilets in the wards are all working now. Just a few are remaining and the work would be completed soon.'

Delhi CM performs yoga with students and boat club members on boats in Yamuna, hits out at AAP for ignoring river cleaning
New Delhi [India], June 21 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations organised at the Yamuna river on Saturday, joining the students and the boat club members as part of the nationwide effort to promote Yoga. CM Gupta also reiterated the promise of cleaning the Yamuna while also hitting out at the Aam Aadmi Party for ignoring the river. 'For years, Yamuna has been ignored by the governments that have been in power; they didn't do the work that should have been done. But, we are continuing our efforts to clean the river Yamuna since we assumed power in Delhi... Today, from the bank of this river, we participate in Yoga to give a message to the people of Delhi that the work is ongoing to clean the river. Soon, there will be cruises here where the boats are,' the Delhi CM told reporters here. The CM also took a sarcastic jibe at AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, saying that it cannot be helped if the latter associates Yoga with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'If he (Arvind Kejriwal) sees PM Modi's face in yoga, what can we do? It is possible that after seeing something in the food, he might stop eating. According to a United Nations statement, yoga strengthens the body, calms the mind, and fosters a heightened sense of awareness and responsibility in daily life. This mindfulness allows one to choose healthier and more sustainable lifestyles. In 2014, the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131. The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states. Omar Abdullah Refuses To Divert Water, Punjab Governor's "Culture" Reply
New Delhi: Weeks after a war with Haryana, Punjab is now engaged in a similar conflict with Jammu and Kashmir, as the Union Territory's Chief Minister opposed the idea of diverting surplus water from three Western rivers of the Indus system to Punjab. Mr Abdullah, on Friday, was asked about the proposed construction of a 113 km canal to transfer surplus water from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan to prevent it from flowing to Pakistan. Opposing to divert water to Punjab, the Chief Minister said, "Right now, Jammu is facing water scarcity. There is no water in the taps. Why should I send water to Punjab? Punjab already has three rivers as per the Indus Waters Treaty." He also invoked the 45-year-old dispute between the Punjab and J&K governments over the construction of the Shahpur Kandi barrage in Pathankot. "We have got some water after putting up a fight through the Shahpur Kandi barrage project, but now I will not allow diverting the water of Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab," he said. Reacting to this, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said that indulging in such a dispute is "not in our culture". "I don't think the water supply can be stopped just because someone is saying it. If this dispute had been between two countries, it would be acceptable. I can understand. But it is not possible in the same country. Some people get more share of water than others in the same country, I don't think this is in our culture," he said. Punjab Minister Ravneet Bittu also hit out at Mr Abdullah, questioning how he could stop the water supply as it is the Centre's decision. Punjab-Haryana water dispute The row over water sharing started after AAP-ruled Punjab refused to release more water to BJP-ruled Haryana, claiming the latter has "already used 103 per cent of its allocated share of water by March". The dispute reignited once again, with tensions escalating over the latest reduction in water supply from the Bhakra Nangal Dam. The Haryana government has demanded 8,500 cusecs of water; however, Punjab has declined the request, asserting that it doesn't have the water to spare. The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has already slashed Haryana's daily water quota from 9,500 cusecs to just 4,000 cusecs. Defending this controversial move, Mr Mann stressed that Punjab is facing a water crisis of its own. He pointed out that Punjab's annual water accounting begins on May 21 each year and insisted that Haryana has already used up its allocation for the current cycle. According to him, the Ranjit Sagar Dam is 39 feet below last year's level, while the Pong Dam is down by 24 feet. "We don't have a single extra drop to spare," he said, underlining the severity of the water shortage in Punjab.
