Philippines Inches Closer to Historic Infrastructure Milestone with Completion of Davao Tunnel Excavation

Daily Tribune31-01-2025

The Philippines is on the brink of achieving a monumental infrastructure achievement as the excavation phase for the country's longest road tunnel nears completion. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Thursday that the Davao City Bypass Construction Project is set to achieve a key milestone by the second quarter of 2025.
According to Emil Sadain, DPWH Senior Undersecretary, excavation works for the project's north-bound tunnel are 95 percent complete, while the south-bound segment stands at 85 percent. This ambitious engineering feat is poised to be the longest road tunnel in the Philippines, once finished.
A Twin-Tube Marvel
The Davao City Bypass Tunnel will feature a twin-tube passage slicing through the rugged terrain of Davao. This revolutionary tunnel will significantly reduce travel time between Toril, Davao City, and Panabo City from nearly two hours to just 49 minutes.
The groundbreaking infrastructure project, with a budget of Php46.8 billion (approximately $800 million), is being supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). On-site inspections by DPWH officials, along with dignitaries including Japanese Ambassador Kazuya Endo, underscore the importance of this venture as a "flagship" infrastructure project under the Marcos administration.
Next Steps and Long-Term Impact
With the excavation phase nearing completion, attention will now shift to tunnel finishing, roadway construction, and final safety measures. Once operational, the tunnel will not only provide safer and more efficient travel but also help in fostering the growth of economic hubs in Mindanao.
The Davao tunnel project is part of a broader effort to strengthen national connectivity under the Philippine Development Plan. By enhancing the movement of people and goods across the country, the project will contribute to the sustainable economic development of Mindanao, positioning Davao as a key growth center in the region. The island is notably larger than Switzerland and the Netherlands combined, making its development crucial for the country's overall growth.
Flagship Infrastructure Projects Transforming the Nation
The Davao City Bypass Tunnel joins a series of other transformative infrastructure projects reshaping the transportation landscape in the Philippines:
Metro Manila Subway: This 33-kilometer underground railway, dubbed the 'Crown Jewel of Philippine Mass Transport,' will be the country's first subway system. Upon its partial opening in 2027, it will reduce travel time from Valenzuela to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from over an hour to just 35 minutes, serving 370,000 passengers daily.
North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR): This 147-kilometer railway will seamlessly connect Metro Manila to Clark, Pampanga, and Laguna, benefiting up to 800,000 daily passengers once fully operational. The project is co-financed by JICA and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX): The Philippines' longest bridge, CCLEX, spans 8.9 kilometers, linking Cebu City to Mactan Island. Opened in 2022, it significantly eases traffic congestion while boosting tourism and trade in the region.
Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge: This $3.91-billion bridge will cross Manila Bay, reducing travel time between Bataan and Cavite from five hours to just minutes, bypassing Manila's congested roads.
New Manila International Airport: Set to become one of Southeast Asia's largest aviation hubs, the $14-billion airport in Bulakan will ease congestion at NAIA. With four parallel runways, it will handle up to 100 million passengers annually once completed.
As these projects continue to reshape the nation's infrastructure, the Davao City Bypass Tunnel stands as a testament to the Philippines' commitment to improving connectivity and driving economic growth for future generations.

Review: A Memorable Stay at Marriott Marquis Dubai Creek

The recently opened Marriott Marquis Dubai Creek is the kind of hotel that surprises you (and your expectations). I stay in more hotels than I can count, mostly for work, and rarely does a business-focused property tick all the boxes quite like this one. Let's start with location: a solid win. Five minutes from the airport, ten from DIFC, and you're practically neighbours with Dubai Festival City, the Gold & Spice Souks, and a championship golf course. It's a sweet spot whether you're landing for a board meeting or heading out to explore. My check-in was seamless, and the hotel, although still relatively new, was impressively busy. The Marriott Marquis name tends to draw a crowd that appreciates understated luxury, and this one is no exception. It delivers that signature blend of comfort and efficiency, with just the right amount of shine. The Promenade The Skyline I was upgraded to a suite with a panoramic view over the creek – and honestly, waking up to that golden morning light bouncing off the water made the business emails feel a little less dreadful. The area is buzzing yet peaceful, a rare combination in this part of the city. The restaurants deserve a proper mention. You could spend a full week here without running out of great food. Creek Kitchen had a buzzing breakfast vibe, Bella Bocca made me crave carbs again (those pasta…), and BBQ Bros served up proper grilled indulgence with a view. Bella Bocca Creek Kitchen Ruby Ru by Iris was the unexpected scene-stealer – French-Japanese flavours, inventive cocktails, and a terrace that comes alive as the sun dips. The Copperhead , with its easygoing pub feel and solid bar bites, was my go-to after long meetings. The M Club Lounge also deserves a nod. Great for those who want to work, snack, or unwind in peace. Bonus points for the outdoor seating and the all-day offerings. Between appointments, I managed to sneak in a couple of workouts at the hotel's gym – easily one of the better ones I've seen in a business hotel. Spacious, well-equipped, and overlooking the pool deck. The Pool Deck The Gym And then there's the sauna and steam room, which I'll go ahead and call 'essential.' The spa facilities as a whole are excellent – whether you're winding down from a flight or a meeting, it's the kind of place where you can genuinely reset. But what stood out the most was how everything just worked, no fuss, no trying too hard. The staff are fantastic – warm, attentive, and seem to read the room perfectly, whether you're in a hurry or in holiday mode. It's one of those rare hotels where I felt like I had everything I needed – great dining, reliable WiFi, top-tier fitness and wellness facilities, and a location that made getting around Dubai almost too easy. Whether you're in town to close deals or just want a breezy creekside escape with a touch of polish, Marriott Marquis Dubai Creek makes a pretty compelling case. I can't wait to be back. Skills training programs for Filipinos successful

A series of skills training programs for Filipinos has concluded successfully at the Philippine Embassy and the Majestic Hotel in Bahrain, equipping participants with valuable knowledge in baking, haircutting, manicure, and pedicure. The initiative, part of the Philippine government's ongoing efforts to empower Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), aimed to provide participants with practical skills that support career advancement, financial self-sufficiency, and future reintegration upon returning to the Philippines. A total of 61 Filipinos completed the trainings, with 32 graduating from the baking skills session held in the morning, and 29 others completing training in haircutting, manicure, and pedicure during the afternoon. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Welfare Officer Juvilyn Anns Gumabay and Migrant Workers Office Officer-in-Charge Celia V. Cabadonga led the ceremonies and commended the participants for their dedication and willingness to improve themselves. They encouraged other OFWs to take advantage of similar opportunities in the future. 'This kind of training not only enriches your skillset but also prepares you for a more secure and sustainable future,' said Cabadonga. 'We are proud of every participant who committed to personal growth.'
