Man accused of kidnapping, raping toddler killed in encounter by Lucknow police hours after committing crime
LUCKNOW: In a major crackdown, the Lucknow police tracked a rape accused, Deepak Verma, 24, and neutralised him in an encounter near the Sugarcane Institute in the Devi Kheda area on the outskirts of the state capital early Friday morning.
Deepak, who had allegedly raped a two-and-a-half-year-old girl under the Alambagh metro station just hours earlier, was gunned down after he opened fire on a police team that had zeroed in on him. He sustained two bullet injuries in the chest and later died during treatment.
The heinous crime occurred in the early hours of Friday when the accused allegedly kidnapped the toddler, who was sleeping with her parents under the Alambagh metro station. Gagging her mouth, he lifted her and carried her towards the lift area around 2:30 am, where he raped her.
After the girl fainted due to severe injuries, the accused, presuming her dead, fled the scene. A handicapped passerby later found the child lying unconscious and bleeding and alerted nearby residents and her parents.
Soon after the incident, a 3.55-second CCTV footage from the metro premises surfaced. It showed Deepak arriving on a white Honda Activa, pressing the lift button, and then crossing the road to pick up the girl. He is seen lifting her and taking her towards the lift where the assault took place.
Police said the footage suggested the accused had been monitoring the location and assessing the situation multiple times before striking.

A 39-year-old man was beaten to death by five persons aboard a train allegedly over a seat dispute in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district late Friday night, railway police officials said. All the five accused have been arrested, it is learnt. Those arrested have been identified as Sanjeev, Rahul, Vishal, Priyanshu and Siddharth, all residents of Khekra in Baghpat. 'The victim fainted in the train after being hit on the head. On receiving information, a police team rushed him to the Khekra community health centre where he was declared dead,' the SP said. Following Yadav's death, an FIR was registered under Sections 103 (murder) and 191(2) (rioting) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), officials said. 'An investigation is underway after arresting the five men,' said the SP. According to Yadav's family, he had been working at a chandelier showroom in New Delhi for the past 15 years and travelled to Khekra every weekend. The family's neighbour Rajveer Singh, 57, said a few months ago Yadav's acquaintance had entered into an altercation with a group of men. 'Deepak was not present at the time of that incident. But on Friday, his friends got down at Badarpur, the accused started attacking him. By the time we reached, he was dead,' said Singh. Badlapur: The body of Air India cabin crew member and Badlapur-resident Deepak Pathak, 32, who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, was identified on Friday, a week after the incident. His body reached his home on Saturday, where hundreds of people attended his funeral. His last rites were performed at the cremation ground in Badlapur. Sandesh Patil, a resident of the complex, said, "Deepak was like a brother to us; we are all saddened by his death." Pathak's family said that on the day of the incident, June 12, he was not assigned duty on the flight. He was on sick leave and was scheduled for a trip to London on June 14. However, he received a call from officials citing an emergency on June 11, so he left for Ahmedabad. Passenger in UP beaten to death over seat dispute in moving train
A 39-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of 15 to 20 men aboard a moving train late Friday night. The victim, Deepak Yadav, was returning to his hometown of Baghpat from Delhi when he was attacked during the Saharanpur-Delhi passenger train's journey near Fakharpur railway station. According to police, the fatal assault began following a dispute over a seat and continued for nearly 10 km, from Fakharpur to Khekra station. Deepak's maternal uncle, Subhash Yadav, alleged that the mob was led by a man identified as Rahul Baba from Basi village. He claimed that the attackers, who frequently travelled on the same route, recognised Deepak when he was alone and launched the assault. 'He was travelling with co-workers who got off at Fakharpur.
