Hurley misses out through injury as Cleary makes three Cork changes for Meath clash

Irish Examiner23-05-2025

Cork football boss John Cleary has made three changes to his side for the All-Ireland SFC Group 2 opener against Meath in Navan on Saturday (throw-in, 3pm).
Captain Brian Hurley misses out through injury with Cathail O'Mahony drafted in to start at full-forward.
Despite the blow of Hurley's absence, O'Mahony has enjoyed a run of fitness of late that has allowed the Michelstown marksman to build up his form, culminating in his inclusion in Cleary's starting 15 alongside Chris Óg Jones and Mark Cronin in the full-forward line.

Michéal Aodh Martin starts between the sticks, while the other two changes come in the full-back line. Seán Brady - suspended following his controversial red card in the extra-time loss to Kerry in the Munster semi-final - and Tommy Walsh - suffering with a heel issue - miss out.
Their replacements come in the form of experienced duo Seán Meehan and Maurice Shanley, who join mainstay Daniel O'Mahony. The Páirc Tailteann clash will mark Kiskeam defender Meehan's maiden start of the season.
Brian O'Driscoll, Rory Maguire and Matty Taylor are once again named in the half-back line, with fit-again Luke Fahy among the subs.
The midfield pair of St Finbarr's Ian Maguire and Éire Óg's Colm O'Callaghan slot in once more in the 8 and 9 berths.
Having put down an impressive maiden campaign thus far, Mallow's Seán O'Donnell keeps his place at half-forward, where he is accompanied by Paul Walsh and Seán Powter.
There is a first competitive matchday squad appearance for newcomer Éanna O'Hanlon, who linked up with the panel this season, while Conor Corbett is forced to sit this one out as he continues to work his way back to match fitness following his recovery from an ACL tear last summer.
Cork: M A Martin (Nemo Rangers); S Meehan (Kiskeam), D O'Mahony (Knocknagree), M Shanley (Clonakilty); B O'Driscoll (Carrigaline), R Maguire (Castlehaven), M Taylor (Mallow); I Maguire (St Finbarr's), C O'Callaghan (Éire Óg); P Walsh (Kanturk), S Powter (Douglas), S McDonnell (Mallow); M Cronin (Nemo Rangers), C O'Mahony (Mitchelstown), C Óg Jones (Iveleary).

Dublin v Limerick LIVE coverage of All-Ireland SHC quarter-final from Croke Park

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Dublin v Limerick in the All-Ireland senior hurling championship quarter-final at Croke Park, which is the opening game of a double-header at GAA HQ - with the SFC preliminary quarter-final between Dublin and Cork to follow. Niall O'Ceallachain's Dubs go into this last eight tie on the back of a victory - last Saturday's preliminary quarter-final demolition of Kildare - but that will count for very little going into the battle with the country's best team of the last eight years. Limerick will be out for a statement performance on the back of the heartbreaking loss on penalties to Cork in the Munster final, after an impressive campaign in the provincial championship. Dublin, on the other hand, looked the part in their win over Wexford in Leinster, and with their second half comeback against Kilkenny in Leinster, but they looked well off the pace in the first half against the Cats and then against Galway, a defeat that cost them a place in the provincial final. As expected, they made short shrift of the Lilywhites last weekend, who were barely over their Joe McDonagh Cup celebrations, and O'Ceallachain will know that his side will have to go up several levels in terms of performance to live with Limerick. Treaty boss John Kiely will look for the right reaction from his players after their Munster disappointment but if Dublin can stay with Limerick, they could sew some seeds of doubt heading down the stretch. Throw in is at 4pm at Croker. There may be changes before the throw-in but here are the teams as announced late in the have two changes from the Kildare game, with Andy Dunphy in for Paddy Dunleavy at wing-back and Conor Burke return for full-forward targetman John Hetherton; Limerick are unchanged. LIMERICK: Nickie Quaid; Sean Finn, Dan Morrissey, Mike Casey; Diarmaid Byrnes, Kyle Hayes, Barry Nash; Adam English, William O'Donoghue; Gearoid Hegarty, Cian Lynch, Tom Morrissey; Aaron Gillane, Aidan O'Connor, David Reidy. Subs: Shane Dowling, Peter Casey, Colin Coughlan, Seamus Flanagan, Declan Hannon, Barry Murphy, Fergal O'Connor, Donnacha O Dalaigh, Darragh O'Donovan, Paddy O'Donovan, Cathal O'Neill. DUBLIN: Sean Brennan; John Bellew, Paddy Smyth, Conor McHugh; Paddy Doyle, Chris Crummey, Andrew Dunphy; Conor Burke, Brian Hayes; Rian McBride, Fergal Whitely, Cian O'Sullivan; Sean Currie, Ronan Hayes, Diarmaid O Dulaing. Subs: Eddie Gibbons, Donal Burke, Colin Currie, Paddy Dunleavy, Daire Gray, John Hetherton, Andrew Jamieson Murphy, David Lucey, James Madden, Paul O'Dea, Darragh Power.

Live GAA updates: Follow the action as Cavan travel to Kerry for preliminary quarter-final

2.55pm Good afternoon everyone. Welcome along to our Examiner Sport liveblog of what's shaping to be a Saturday scorcher of Championship action. The stakes have risen with the temperatures. What you can smell in the air is the peril of straight knockout competition. On deck in the coming hours we have a pair of All-Ireland preliminary quarter finals in the football Championship and two All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals. It's Joe Callaghan here to help navigate the first half of a hectic day. I hope everyone has their sunscreen handy for the afternoon throw-ins, starting with the visit of Cavan down to Fitzgerald Stadium to face Jack O'Connor's Kerry, with a 3.30pm throw-in. Tony Leen will be on the ground in Killarney to provide updates and analysis. Next up will be the first half of a Croke Park hurling-football double header where Limerick face Dublin (4.00pm) before it's Cork's turn against the boys in blue, John Cleary's men looking to follow last weekend's victory over Roscommon by dumping the Dubs out of the Championship. That game throws in at 6.15pm, the same time that arguably the day's standout contest, the meeting of Galway and Tipperary gets going at the Gaelic Grounds with an All-Ireland hurling semi-final at stake. Maurice Brosnan will be our man in Limerick. So, plenty ahead of us. And plenty behind us too, which means I have some required reading to get stuck into before the action gets going. Here's Eamonn Fitzmaurice on how Jack O'Connor must lean on experience, honesty and hard truths to help Kerry rebound from last week's chastening defeat to Meath.
