UP woman's suicide bid thwarted after her social media post triggers alert

Raebareli (UP), Jun 18 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman, distressed by her family's pressure to marry, posted a concerning message on Instagram that hinted at a possible suicide. Fortunately, her post alerted Meta, which led to a swift response from the police, officials said on Wednesday.
The alert was escalated to the state Director General of Police (DGP), Rajeev Krishna, who instructed officers to trace the woman's location using the phone number associated with her account.
Within eight minutes of receiving the alert, a police team from the Mill Area Police Station reached the woman's house and found her safe but emotionally disturbed.
She was given immediate counselling and medical attention, and the police also spoke to her family.
'The young woman wanted to focus on her education, but her parents were pressuring her to get married. Distressed over this, she made the post. Fortunately, we received the alert in time and were able to intervene. Both she and her family have now agreed to resolve the matter peacefully,' Mill Area SHO Rajeev Singh said.
In a similar incident in the Deoria district recently, a 20-year-old student was saved after he posted a distressing suicide note and a picture on Instagram.
On June 12, the man from the Bhalauni area shared a message in Hindi saying, 'Forgive me, brothers, today I'm going to die,' along with a photo showing a noose around his neck.
The post triggered an alert from Meta at 3.44 pm to the UP Police Social Media Centre in Lucknow. The alert was relayed to the Deoria district police with the individual's location details.
A police sub-inspector from Bhalauni reached the student's home within 12 minutes, found him attempting to hang himself, and managed to rescue him in the nick of time.
The student later explained that he was under stress due to a bank loan taken by his parents that they were unable to repay. A recent notice and a heated exchange over the matter left him feeling deeply guilty, pushing him toward the drastic step.
After counselling, the student assured the police he would not repeat such an act, officials said.

In February this year, finding his behavior odd, the Akola jail authorities took him to Akola Central Hospital, where doctors advised that he be taken to Thane Mental Hospital for a proper examination. The 34-year-old former constable has been in Thane Mental Hospital since February 20. On March 12, the court ordered a stop to the trial since Chaudhary could not be present even through video conferencing. Four witnesses, including two RPF constables on duty with him that night, have so far testified. With a new judge having taken over, the court on Friday ordered that Choudhary's medical report be presented in court by the next date, July 3.

₹3.31-cr embezzlement: CB-CID files chargesheet against former VC of Bhatkhande
The crime bureau-criminal investigation department (CB-CID) of the Uttar Pradesh Police has filed a chargesheet against the former vice-chancellor (VC) of Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University, professor Shruti Sadolikar Katkar, and six more employees in connection with alleged financial embezzlement to the tune of ₹ 3.31 crore during her tenure between 2009 and 2020. The FIR was lodged against the former VC of Bhatkhande Institute and others at Qaiserbagh police station on March 5, 2021. (Sourced) Confirming the filing of the chargesheet in a special court in Lucknow for cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act earlier this week, CB-CID officials said the court would frame charges against the accused before starting the trial. Katkar's tenure as vice-chancellor was controversial, and governor Anandiben Patel, who is also president of the Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University, had terminated her services on December 21, 2020. Before that, she had been placed under suspension for months. Katkar could not be contacted for her comment as her previous number is not operational. According to a senior CB-CID official, the FIR was lodged against Katkar and others for financial embezzlement at Qaiserbagh police station on March 5, 2021. The FIR was filed after the governor ordered the principal secretary, culture, to initiate legal and administrative action against Katkar for alleged financial and administrative irregularities in a report submitted by a three-member inquiry committee to Raj Bhavan. The senior official said the committee was headed by justice Virendra Kumar Dixit, a retired judge of the Allahabad high court. He further said the committee found that in 2018, Katkar had approved a ₹ 3.08-crore project for construction of Kala Mandap without following any tender process. Similarly, a private engineering firm was allocated work to the tune of ₹ 23 lakh without following the tendering process. Several other firms were paid over ₹ 4 crore in two years' time by her. The committee found that an additional ₹ 1.8 crore was yet to be paid to several other firms, the official said citing the governor's order. The senior official said that the allegations and findings were corroborated during the CB-CID investigation, following which the chargesheet was filed against Katkar and six other employees, including the then drawing and disbursing officer. It was found in the investigation that Katkar, along with other employees, flouted government rules and regulations, causing financial losses, the official said, adding the chargesheet also names 12 firms accused for their involvement in financial irregularities to the tune of ₹ 3.31 crore. Katkar was suspended on July 31, 2020 when it was found that she was residing outside the headquarters without seeking permission from competent authority and had nominated Dr Manoj Kumar Mishra, head of the department, to run the university administration on her behalf. In her order, the governor said despite several opportunities given to the Bhatkhande vice-chancellor to defend herself against 15-point allegations by appearing before the inquiry committee, Katkar neither showed up, nor submitted her representation against the charges. Thereafter, the committee sent her letters, asking her to respond to the allegations. In her reply, VC sent a letter to the committee in September, 2020. The committee, after reviewing her response, found her guilty for at least six of the 15 charges levelled against her, according to the governor's order.

Bengaluru student trying to sell books online suspects scam, yet loses Rs 90,000 to crook
Bengaluru: An 18-year-old girl, in an attempt to sell her books and make some pocket money, ended up losing Rs 90,000 to online fraudsters recently. Sonal (name changed), residing in Sidedahalli, north Bengaluru, said she lost money on June 15 after posting an advertisement on OLX platform two days earlier to sell her One Piece: East Blue volumes 4-9. She was contacted by potential buyer Ashok Agarwal (no. 7041855882) on June 15. She quoted the price for two books as Rs 1,500 and he readily agreed to buy them. He spoke to her in Hindi and asked her to share her location. He claimed he would make the payment and send his employee to collect the books from her house. "Since it was my first time, I asked him why he was agreeing to make the payment without seeing the books. He spoke to me convincingly and claimed he trusts me. I asked him to pay through a digital payment application (DPA)," Sonal told TOI. "The fraudster told me he would make the payment only through a bank account. He sent QR code of Re 1 and asked me to scan it and receive money so that the account could be verified. Initially, the message displayed was 'transaction failed', but the amount got credited to my account. I thought it was legitimate. He then sent me another code for Rs 1,500. When I scanned it, the money got deducted from my account," Sonal said. "I realised I was being conned and told him so. He claimed it was not a scam and cited technical glitches," Sonal said. He sent her another QR code. But the transaction failed as she didn't have enough balance in the account. "He told me I had insufficient funds and asked me to give an alternative UPI ID. I scanned the code from my mother's DPA, and Rs 4,500 got deducted from her account. I hung up but he kept calling, promising to return the money. Later, he sent another QR code and when I scanned it, Rs 19,500 got deducted from my mother's account twice. He later siphoned off Rs 40,500," Sonal said. Before he could cheat her any further, Sonal's father intervened and pulled up the fraudster over the phone. In an hour, they went to the police station and cops froze the fraudster's account.
