Elvis the stowaway squirrel in Guernsey thought captured or dead

An animal charity has said it is "highly likely that something has happened" to a squirrel thought to have arrived in Guernsey via a vehicle in February.Steve Byrne, manager of the Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA), said he thought it likely the animal, dubbed Elvis, had been captured or killed.In March the States of Guernsey had tried to trap the invasive non-native mammal but this week said it "couldn't justify the use of taxpayers' money to continue looking for our stowaway visitor".Mr Byrne asked anyone with any information about the squirrel to share it with the GSPCA.
'Very few predators'
The States Veterinary Officers said they were "not actively seeking to catch the squirrel".The Sarnian squirrel, colloquially named Elvis, was first spotted near Bluchip in St Sampsons on 24 February.Mr Byrne said there had been a number of sightings near and around Delancy Park between the areas of St Peter Port and St Sampsons until early March.He said: "We have very few predators in Guernsey that would kill or eat a squirrel other than birds of prey, certain pets or human beings - whether accidental or intentional - which we hope hasn't happened."We continue to appeal for sightings of Elvis, but with the months of no reports it is highly likely that something has happened to the Sarnian squirrel from being captured to sadly no longer alive."

"For the kittens, the best thing has always been with mum, they don't have such a good chance with me."The charity put out an appeal to the person who dumped the kittens to come forward."If we could get that cat, she could raise her could neuter her and return her to the owner, neutered free of charge," Ms Thornton said."It's a miracle that somebody found them and it'll be another miracle if they actually survive the trauma that they've been through. Posting on Reddit, on the r/Wellthatsucks forum under the username @kp33ze, the anonymous user uploaded a picture of their neighbour's pool from their kitchen window, leaving many totally stunned. The image was shared with a caption that read: 'This is my neighbour's disgusting pool. Squirrel drowned in it today..' The author then wrote: 'My neighbour 's sad state of a pool, been like that for nearly three years. 'Today I saw something moving in I thought it was some sort of fish, but nope it was a squirrel that fell in. 'Went over and let my neighbour know but by the time she got back there the squirrel was dead. She took it out and just left it behind the pool…' Disgusted by the revolting 'pool', the user continued: 'I asked her to drain it, cover it or at least put something in there to let animals climb out if they fall in. Spurn wildlife reserve staff 'told families to kill caterpillars'

A mother-of-two said she felt "physically sick" when families enjoying a tour of a Yorkshire nature reserve were told to "stomp" on said the suggestion was made by a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) staff member at Spurn - a peninsula that extends into the Humber said: "The invasive species had apparently deserved to be squashed because they were eating the leaves of the sea buckthorn. They are an invasive species. We need to do something about them and I would encourage you to stomp on as many as you can find'."Sara said the comment made her "feel physically sick", as she and her family refused to take said: "I was shocked. People were having fun, stamping on these poor caterpillars. "I was brought up to respect all creatures." In a statement, YWT said: "We should not ask visitors to kill caterpillars, even invasive ones. The information that was given during the Spurn safari is not correct, we are sorry and thank Sara for letting us know. "While we investigate, we have reviewed our training and reminded colleagues that this is not what we do, and under no circumstances should it be suggested that visitors take such action."Brown-tail moth caterpillars are a "native but invasive species" and active during spring and summer months, the trust creatures have tiny, barbed hairs that can cause a rash when they come into contact with skin, and damage rare said it follows "established practices", under approval from Natural England, to manage the population, with this activity carried out over the autumn and that emerge in the spring should be left to continue their natural life cycle, the trust added. Sara said she could no longer support YWT."As a compassionate individual, I joined YWT (as a supporter) to support the care of all wildlife, not just a selection," she added."I will not be returning."
