Schoolchildren injured in John Ross highway crash

Eleven children, aged five to eight years, were injured when the minibus taxi they were travelling in collided with a truck on the John Ross highway on Monday.
The taxi was travelling from eSikhaleni to Richards Bay when the crash occurred at the dangerous Eyamakhosi truck stop intersection.

KwaZulu-Natal Private Ambulances spokesperson Craig Botha said four children suffered serious injuries while seven sustained minor injuries.
'When our paramedics arrived at the scene, they provided immediate medical attention to the children. All injured were stabilised at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care,' Botha said.
In a separate incident, eight members of Umkhumbi Wesethembiso Church in Zion – with headquarters in Hluhluwe – were killed in a horror crash on the N2 near the John Ross highway bridge on Sunday.
Reports indicate that 24 church members from Gobandlovu outside Esikhaleni were en route to Dukuduku near Mtubatuba when a large towing vehicle hit their light truck from behind.
The truck's canopy flung off as a result of the impact, with the passengers thrown onto the highway.
The KZN Department of Transport and Human Settlement MEC, Siboniso Duma, said, 'My office is in touch with Reverend Simiso Mathe from the local branch, Intathakusa Church in Zion, based in Ward 3.
'The church is affiliated with Umkhumbi Wesethembiso Church in Zion. Nine church members were treated and discharged on Sunday, and three are still in the hospital.'
He added that the tow truck driver was arrested, and a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by police.

KZN premier summoned to appear before portfolio committee

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has been summoned to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Office of the Premier, Community Safety and Liaison to give clarity on allegations that the youth manager in his office threatened to physically harm the former director general, Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize. Portfolio Committee chair Mbali Frazer alleges that Mkhize's crime was to refuse to sign off an appointment letter related to the R100-million Youth Fund. 'We have written a letter to him requesting him to appear before the committee. 'The Office of the Premier has a critical role to play in terms of the co-ordination of the work of provincial government departments on service delivery. The destabilisation of the Office of the Premier in any form, including threats to physically harm a senior female civil servant, should be viewed in a serious light by all leaders of society across all political affiliations,' she said. The ANC Youth League strongly condemns the actions of Premier Thami Ntuli for allegedly shielding perpetrators of violence, particularly gender-based violence (GBV), within his administration. ANCYL KZN Provincial Secretary Lulama Mabude said they are appalled by these allegations. 'We fully support the Youth Fund initiative established by the former ANC premier, Numusa Dube-Ncube, to empower young people to thrive in business and contribute meaningfully to the economy. 'However, we categorically reject the misuse of these funds to benefit non-compliant applicants or those selected based on political affiliation. 'We demand an immediate halt to this process and call for a transparent, merit-based review to ensure funds serve their intended purpose of uplifting KZN's youth,' said Mabude. She added that the youth manager in question is alleged to have pressured Mkhize to approve these funds to benefit his political allies and associates, undermining the integrity of the Youth Fund. 'We will not tolerate government officials perpetuating GBV and escaping accountability. 'South African women and youth live in constant fear due to harassment and abuse, and the premier's office has failed to address these serious allegations,' said Mabude. Man killed by crocodile at local game reserve

A 56-year-old man has lost his life after he was brutally attacked by a crocodile at a game reserve in Hluhluwe on Saturday. The tragic incident happened at a dam within the Bonamanzi Game Reserve. While the details of the incident are being withheld at this stage to protect the family, the game reserve has expressed condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. 'Our hearts are with the family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,' the reserve stated. Father gets life imprisonment for son's murder

The Ezakheni Regional Court sentenced Ayanda Snothi Zwane (35) to life imprisonment for the murder of his son (6) in June last year. The court heard how, on the day of the murder, Zwane quarrelled with the child's mother while the child was asleep. Once he had chased the woman out of the yard, Zwane took the sleeping child and smashed his head on a rock. The child died after suffering a skull fracture with severe brain injury. Zwane was arrested shortly thereafter. In court, Prosecutor Amelia Lieketseng Mphomane led the testimony of the child's mother who was an eyewitness, the photographer who attended the scene, and the medical doctor who conducted the post-mortem. In aggravation of the sentence. Mphomane asked the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment because Zwane's actions had traumatised every member of the family.
