HC directs Khurda collector to dispose of trust plea against eviction within 1 month
Cuttack: Orissa high court on Tuesday directed the Khurda district collector to dispose of within a month a grievance petition filed by a temple trust regarding eviction proceedings from the Khandagiri caves located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
Justice S K Panigrahi ordered that "no coercive action shall be taken against the petitioner till the disposal of the grievance petition", restraining eviction proceedings initiated by the authorities.
The dispute arose after Maa Barabhuja Temple Managing Trust, which oversees worship and welfare activities in the area, submitted a grievance petition to the commissioner-cum-secretary of the general administration (GA) department on Oct 28, 2024, seeking alienation or lease of 0.156 acres of scheduled land across five plots in use by the trust.
Despite its cultural and religious significance, eviction notices were served on the trust by the authorities on Nov 8 that year.
The Khandagiri caves, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1912, are a heritage site dating back to 2nd century BC and associated with Jainism. However, over the decades, the caves have also become the site of Hindu religious practices. Cave numbers 8 and 9 are used for the worship of Barabhuja Thakurani and Mahavir (Hanuman), while Jangleswar Mahadev is worshipped in another cave.
The annual 'Magh Saptami Mela', organised every Feb by the state govt in collaboration with the trust and local organisations, draws thousands of devotees, including monks who stay in the caves. The trust, recognised by the commissioner of endowments, also manages free facilities such as toilets, kitchens and rest areas at the base of the hill.
Despite the the Board of Revenue forwarding the trust's petition to the Khurda collector on Dec 6, 2024, no action has been taken, the trust stated in its petition.
Taking note of the facts and submissions, Justice Panigrahi disposed of the petition with a directive to the collector to take appropriate action "within one month from the date of production/presentation of a certified copy of this order".
The order comes as a temporary relief to the trust and the local religious community, allowing the continuation of their longstanding activities while their claim is under official consideration.

Pseudo-secularists disrespecting only Hindu Gods, culture: Pawan Kalyan
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Sunday hit out at 'pseudo-secularists' who, he alleged, were 'disrespecting' only Hindu Gods and Hindu culture. Participating in the Muruga Bhaktargal (devotees) conference organised by the Hindu Munnani in Madurai, he claimed Hindus are facing such disrespect for the last 75 years as they failed to nip in the bud such organisations. The actor-politician said tolerance and patience of Hindus should not be mistaken for cowardice. Such [anti-Hindu] forces were taking shield under 'freedom of speech' guaranteed by the Constitution. Quoting a Tamil proverb 'Sadhu mirandal kaadu kollathu' (even a forest cannot withstand the anger of a sage), he said the Hindus should get united and put up a courageous fight against such forces. 'We will unite with love and win with anger,' he said. Contending that in the kaliyuga, Lord Murugan will not come to destory Soorapadman (demon)., he said, 'We should take on the destructive forces on our own. ' The conference drew a massive crowd of Lord Murugan devotees and cadres of Hindu Munnani and BJP and volunteers of RSS. Hindu Munnani leaders, including its State president, Kadeswara Subramaniam, RSS leader, R. Vanniarajan, BJP leaders, Nainar Nagendran, Tamil Isai Soundarajan, K. Annamalai, AIADMK leaders, Sellur, K. Raju, R.B. Udhayakumar, K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji, Kadambur Raju, and V.V. Rajan Chellappa, were present on the dais along with a large number of sanyasis. Amidst dark clouds, the crowd remained seated occasionally chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jay' and 'Vetrivel Muruganakku Arogara'. With the High Court directing the organisers not to mix politics with bhakthi at the event, most of the speakers did not take any names of political parties or political leaders even though they attacked those who were against the philosophy of Hinduism. However, they said certain politicians were wiping off 'tiruneeru (holy ash) from forehead' before posing for a selfie and said such forces were disrespecting only Hindu Gods, culture and way of life. The conference passed a resolution demanding that Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments should get out of the administration of temples and all the temples should be handed over to an independent board as the government was administering only the Hindu temples and not places of worship of other religions. The temples are deprived of any basic amenities including even one-time puja, it claimed. The hundial collection were used for buying cars for the officials, the resolution alleged. Hindus should unite and prove it in the next election through its vote bank as political parties were trying to woo only minorities as Hindus have remained not united, another resolution said. Karthigai Deepam atop the hillock of Subramaniaswamy Temple in Tirupparankundram should be lit on Karthigai festival. All the hillocks, which are abodes of Lord Murugan, should be protected from being overtaken by other religions. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who the organisers earlier said would be addressing the gathering, did not turn up for the event.

MDMK leader Vaiko condemns political parties for holding events in the name of gods
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko said on Sunday it was wrong for political parties to hold conferences in the name of any god. Speaking to reporters after the party's general council meeting in Erode, he said, 'Using the name of any god for a party conference is inappropriate, irrespective of which deity it is.' Referring to the Lord Muruga devotees conference held in Madurai on Sunday, he alleged the BJP, RSS, and Hindutva forces were behind the event. 'This will not help consolidate the Hindu vote bank in Tamil Nadu,' he felt. At the general council meeting, which saw the participation of around 1,800 members from across Tamil Nadu, the party adopted 28 resolutions, including one that called for the MDMK to contest in a higher number of seats in the alliance [headed by DMK] in the 2026 Assembly elections to secure Election Commission 'recognition' as a political party. Another resolution emphasised the need to counter what it described as ongoing efforts by the Union government to undermine Tamil language and identity. The council also demanded the withdrawal of a circular that mandates the disbursal of cooperative loans based on CIBIL score. Mr. Vaiko said the MDMK joined the DMK alliance in 2017 to protect the ideals of the Dravidian movement, which he said were under threat from attempts to impose Hindi and to alienate religious minorities. 'We are part of the alliance not out of convenience, but to uphold ideological goals,' he said. The MDMK would work to ensure the alliance's victory in future elections. Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent comment that a day would come when those speaking in English in India would be made to feel ashamed of it, Mr Vaiko said, 'He is an expert in making shameful comments.' Dismissing speculation about discussions with the BJP, he clarified that the MDMK had not held any talks and would not do so. He criticised BJP leaders Tamilisai Soundararajan and Nainar Nagendran for making baseless and irresponsible statements. He said the DMK-led alliance remained strong and would comfortably win future elections. While the DMK had fulfilled many of its promises despite financial constraints, the Union government had withheld funds and Governor R.N. Ravi had blocked key Bills, acting as an agent of the BJP, he alleged.
