In India's congested cities, delivery apps cash in

In India's sprawling financial hub of Mumbai armies of "dabbawalas" have for decades crisscrossed the city by foot and bicycle, delivering home-cooked food to office workers who are keen to avoid the searing heat and traffic-snarled streets.
Now, across the country, young entrepreneurs are taking that tradition to the next level with the explosion of shopping apps that allow customers to get hold of not only food and drink but anything else from clothes to iPhones -- within minutes.
The so-called
quick commerce apps
are redefining the retail game, not only disrupting e-commerce titans such as Amazon with their speed and efficiency but also long-established "mom and pop" stores which are no longer convenient enough.
At a warehouse managed by online grocer
BigBasket
in central Mumbai, employees work with military-like precision to pull off deliveries in just 10 minutes.
These warehouses are known within the industry as "
dark stores
", a reference to being closed off to customers.
When a new order is received, a worker leaps into action, darting through aisles filled with everything from fizzy drinks to vegetables, packing a bag of groceries handed to a motorbike rider -- the modern-day "dabbawala", Hindi for "lunchbox man".
Local tech companies have poured in billions to set up these nifty logistical networks across big cities, fuelling India's rapid shopping industry.
- 'Unprecedented' -
For millions of customers, it's an easy way to avoid shopping in the sweltering heat -- visiting multiple food stalls -- and spending hours navigating the country's notorious traffic jams.
Growth has been "very strong", BigBasket co-founder Vipul Parekh told AFP, pointing to forecasts that indicate a compounded annual growth rate of more than 60 percent over the next two to three years.
"When you talk of a large industry transforming and growing at this pace, that is unprecedented," he said.
Delivery apps such as Getir or Jokr have faltered in Europe and the United States in recent years, as pandemic-induced demand wore off and rising inflation pinched customer wallets.
But sales in India have soared from $100 million in 2020 to an estimated $6 billion in 2024, according to projections by market analysis firm Datum Intelligence.
This could hit $40 billion by the end of the decade, according to investment bank JM Financial.
Companies say India's quick commerce's growth is partly down to the sheer scale of people living in tight-packed cities within a roughly two kilometre (one mile) radius of a "dark store", said Parekh.
"The revenue potential in that catchment is very high," he said.
A lack of many traditional supermarket grocery chains in India aid the business model, he said.

, a regular user, admits that they make him "lazy", but argues that the convenience is unbeatable.
"I just press a bunch of keys and all of it comes delivered to home," says the 32-year-old, who works in Mumbai's film industry.
Local players have made rapid progress but competition is heating up.
Amazon is getting its act together, along with Walmart-owned Flipkart and billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries as they belatedly roll out rapid delivery offerings.
"One of the problems with e-commerce players like Amazon is that, until now, they've relied on these big fulfilment centres that sit on the outside or outskirts of cities," said Satish Meena of Datum Intelligence.
"These aren't suited for rapid delivery, which is why they now need to invest to build their own dark store networks within urban areas."
- 'Just order it online' -
However, a more crowded industry threatens the sustainability of the sector that has already seen one prominent start-up go bust.
"My sense is that the market is good enough for two to three players," said Rahul Malhotra of Bernstein, a research firm, adding that the total addressable market may be worth around $50-$60 billion.
"Some of the early movers, with hyperlocal capabilities obviously, have an advantage here."
The sector could also face challenges from thousands of small, family-run shops.
The Confederation of All India Traders, a leading industry group that claims to represent over 90 million small businesses, has called for "a nationwide movement" against newer platforms.
Its president likened quick commerce to being a "modern-day East India Company", a reference to the rapacious British power that began in the 17th century to seize swathes of India, preceding colonial rule.
For now, customers are voting with their wallets.
"When I think of groceries I think, 'I can just order it online'," said Ravindra.

This can also do away with the need for a travel booking platforms as the AI can directly access the airlines' or hotels systems and come up with the best fares. Even the need of human resources may go down," he said. Ganesh said tier-2 centres like Nagpur are emerging as the next growth centre for AI tech. "One of the biggest advantages is that there is less competition among companies to hire talent. In contrast, in the IT hubs of the country, multiple companies are chasing the same talent pool. Moreover, the smaller towns have more space for adopting technology as against the bigger cities," he said. Amitabh Khanna, president of the Vidarbha Software Exporters Association, also interacted with Ganesh. "Visits by such entrepreneurs help boost entrepreneurship in the region," said Khanna. Earlier, speaking at the VMA event, Ganesh explained how disruption has impacted the automobile industry. Battery-operated electric cars are challenging the traditional combustion engine. "It's no longer about fuel efficiency alone; cars today sell on the basis of features, technology and aspiration," he said. He stressed disruption does not necessarily need to stem from originality. "Adopting and modifying existing viable ideas to suit evolving market needs is often more effective," he said.

Kavya Maran- File image Bad news for Sunrisers Hyderabad fans: In a matter of bad news for the fans of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Hyderabad CEO Kavya Maran, Kavya's father and owner of South India's big media company Sun Network, Kalanidhi Maran has been accused of money laundering. As per a PTI report, DMK Lok Sabha MP Dayanidhi Maran has accused his brother Kalanidhi Maran of 'financial crimes,' and asked him to restore the entire shareholding position of Sun TV and related companies to their original state or face legal and regulatory action.' The main dispute is regarding the shareholding of the Sun Network, which was equally split between the Maran and Karunanidhi families before 2003. As per the allegations, the company funds were misused to launch ventures like Sun Direct TV, Sun Pictures, an FM channel, and IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad after 2003. Kalanidhi Maran accused of 'financial crimes' In the notice, Dayanidhi Maran has accused Kalanithi of committing 'fraudulent practices' and 'misgovernance' during the takeover of Sun TV. As per media reports, Dayanidhi Maran has alleged that his brother was involved in a series of 'calculated and coordinated financial crimes' including cheating and money laundering. If the allegations are proved, BCCI may take actions strict against Kavya Maran and her IPL team. 'White-collar criminality' Such acts amount to white-collar criminality of the highest order and have caused irreparable loss to the legitimate stakeholders of the companies in question, Dayanidhi alleged in the notice. Meanwhile, Sun TV said 'the alleged matter dates back to 22 years when the company was a closely held private limited company.' Following this development, Sun TV's stock fell as much as 5.25 per cent to Rs 580 in early trade on Friday. However, it later trimmed some losses to trade 3.41 per cent lower at Rs 591. Kalanithi Maran currently holds a 75 per cent stake in the company, which has a market capitalisation of Rs 24,124 crore. From the Opinions Editor: India needs a well thought out trade strategy, but first it needs a China strategy

Dear Express Reader Over the past 11 years, the Narendra Modi government has taken several steps to shore up the economic momentum, and put the country on a higher growth trajectory. But, despite its efforts to ensure macroeconomic stability, revive private sector investments and boost household consumption, growth has been less than spectacular. Between 2014-15 and 2024-25, the economy grew at an average of just 6.2 per cent. Now, in its third term, whether pushed by Donald Trump's tariff war or the imperatives of growth, the government is making a determined effort to sew up trade agreements, hoping they will help embed the country into global supply chains, catalyse exports, and push up growth. A trade deal has been struck with the UK, and talks are proceeding with the US and the EU, with many of the issues that have previously held back these agreements being either resolved or sidestepped. These agreements will ensure greater market access and bring down tariffs, improving competitiveness of exports. But the question is: Will these trade deals be enough? Can they alone facilitate India's deep integration with global supply chains? Can the country emerge as a major production hub without integrating more closely with the supply chains that run through South and East Asia which form a vital part of global production systems? The case of Apple is instructive. The dramatic scaling up of the Apple ecosystem in the country — the company has recently said that iPhones sold in the US market will be mostly sourced from India — is a remarkable development. It is a consequence of both the government's production linked incentive scheme and the firm wanting to diversify its production bases away from China. Now, Apple provides a supplier list — a list that represents 98 per cent of the company's direct spend for materials, manufacturing and assembly of its products worldwide. This would include suppliers not only those involved in the production of the iPhone but also in other Apple products. As per this list, in 2023, 156 of the company's suppliers had manufacturing locations in China, 42 suppliers were located in Japan, 35 in Vietnam and 33 in South Korea, and 14 in India. Two years later the numbers would have changed slightly — as per a recent report there are now more than 20 component suppliers in India — but, they would still point towards the centrality of South and East Asia, and China in particular, to the global production system — a fact that cannot be ignored. If India wants to be a part of the production chain of other Apple products and grab a greater share of the value addition in the production process, it would need the smooth flow of components/materials into the country and more component manufacturers to be located here. And therein lies India's conundrum. What is India's China strategy? Should the country also be a part of RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) and CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership)? In 2019, India chose not to be part of RCEP — the trade agreement that spans China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the 10 ASEAN member states (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). The decision to not join was in large part attributed to concerns over China. But the trade relationship with China has only deepened since. And that is the reality, contrary to the desire of reducing the dependence on China. In 2018-19, before India withdrew from RCEP, its trade deficit with China stood at $53.5 billion. By 2024-25, it had surged to $99.2 billion, without RCEP. India, though, is not alone. Even as the US has tried to reduce its reliance on China, its deficit with the country, though it has declined in recent years, stood at a staggering $295 billion in 2024. And this does not account for rerouting of exports through other countries. But, it's not just about companies like Apple. The issue around rare earth minerals — used in a range of sectors such as smartphones, TVs, EV cars, solar panels and jet engines — underlines China's centrality to the global production system. This reality cannot be wished away. China accounts for 90 per cent of global processing of rare earths. With the country placing restrictions on its exports, EV manufacturers in India have reportedly sought the government's intervention in the matter. If these supplies continue to be restricted, India's EV push, and thus its efforts in shifting towards a cleaner vehicle fleet, risk being affected. And that won't be the only sector that is likely to be impacted. There are some reports which suggest that the government has raised the issue of export curbs on rare earth minerals and magnets with China. But it's not just India. Even the US has been affected. In fact, one of the key aspects of the US-China agreement that was announced by Donald Trump is the upfront export of full magnets, and any necessary rare earths by China. It is difficult to see companies move their production to India on the scale that is needed for the country to emerge as a manufacturing powerhouse unless they can be sure of stable trade relations, of supply chains working smoothly, of the seamless movement of components/personnel from other jurisdictions. India needs a well thought out trade strategy. The lack of clarity partly explains the sluggish pace of investments in the country by domestic as well as foreign firms — both of whom seem to be more inclined to invest in other jurisdictions presumably because the risk-return matrix is not as favourable in India.
