RM107 mln allocated to S'wak under PPRS — Rubiah

KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 9): Some RM107 million has been allocated to Sarawak under the People's Prosperity Housing Programme (PPRS) for the construction and repair of homes for poor households, said Datuk Rubiah Wang.
The Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister said this reflects the federal government's ongoing commitment to improving rural living conditions and addressing poverty, particularly among the hardcore poor.
She added the PPRS, previously known as the Housing Assistance Programme, is being implemented nationwide including Sarawak.
'This year, we began rolling out the PPRS to replace the previous PBR scheme. Many applications have been approved and are currently in the construction phase throughout the state.
'All that depends on the funding allocated for the year too,' the Kota Samarahan MO told reporters after officiating the handover of sacrificial meat for Kampung Asajaya Ulu and Kampung Asajaya Laut, here yesterday.
She explained that applications are evaluated based on strict eligibility and prioritisation criteria to ensure only the most deserving households benefit from the programme.
Rubiah also said that approvals are not given all at once but based on priority, which is determined by the relevant district offices, after which the officers verify and endorse the list of recipients to ensure only those truly in need are given assistance.
'In Asajaya alone, 14 homes have been approved for full reconstruction this year, while several more will undergo repair works in phases. These approvals were made through coordination with the local district office and area assemblyman.
'The assemblyman usually refers applicants to the district office for vetting and investigation before any final approval is granted,' she said.
Earlier, Rubiah took part in the Aidiladha 'ibadah korban' (sacrificial rites) programme at Masjid Darul Salihin in Kampung Tanjung Parang.
The distribution of sacrificial meat was coordinated by the village security and development committee, ensuring it reached eligible recipients especially the needy.
'These programmes not only uphold our religious obligations but also provide a meaningful platform to strengthen the bond between leaders and the community,' she said.
