Kamal Haasan's Thug Life Releases To Massive Fan Frenzy In Chennai, No Shows In Karnataka

NDTV05-06-2025

Chennai:
It's a day of celebration for fans of Kamal Haasan as his much-anticipated film Thug Life released worldwide today - except in Karnataka. NDTV was at Chennai's Rohini Silver Screens, where fans gathered in large numbers, some from neighbouring districts, to be part of the first-day-first-show excitement.
A Release Marred By Controversies
Coming amid the Bengaluru stampede tragedy that killed 11 lives, the traditional fanfare was missing outside the theatre in Chennai, though giant posters and cutouts were in place.
Several fans of Silambarasan (Simbu), who plays a key role in the film, also turned up in full force in T-shirts sporting his name.
"I came all the way from Chengalpattu. I'm a Simbu fan and can't wait to watch him in action," said Suraj, a young college-goer.
Thug Life marks the much-celebrated reunion of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after nearly 40 years. The film features music by AR Rahman, with Trisha, Nassar, and Ashok Selvan in prominent roles.
'Historic Combo'
"The Mani-Kamal-Rahman combo is historic. The songs are already chartbusters. The movie will be a blockbuster," said Lakshmi, a young techie at the venue.
The film has not been released in Karnataka, after a controversy erupted over Kamal Haasan's comments on the Kannada language. Fringe groups demanded an apology, but the actor has stood firm so far.
"My comments were made out of love, not malice. I will not apologise," Kamal said, asserting his constitutional right to freedom of expression and trade.
The Karnataka High Court had suggested an apology or retraction, but Kamal Haasan's legal team cited artistic freedom. Talks are expected between Team Kamal and the Karnataka Film Chamber in the coming days. So far, there are no shows of Thug Life in Karnataka, as the film awaits a green signal in the state.
Monumental Expectations
"We came as a family. Kamal sir never fails. This movie will be a superhit," said Ram, a fan who came with his wife and kids.
With Kamal Haasan's Vikram and Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan setting the box office on fire, expectations from Thug Life are monumental. The film was released across the world today, except for Karnataka. Thug Life marks the return of the Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam duo after 1987's Nayakan.

NDTV Exclusive: Renuka Shahane Recalls Auditioning For Surabhi - "It Was A Disaster"

New Delhi: Before Surabhi became a household name and Renuka Shahane a familiar face in living rooms across India, her journey to the iconic show began with what she calls a "disaster." In an interview with NDTV, the actor recalled how she ended up auditioning for the cultural magazine show after returning from the shoot of Circus, a series where she worked with Shah Rukh Khan early in both their careers. Renuka revealed that her Surabhi audition was far from perfect. In fact, she laughed through most of it. "I forgot the lines. I kept laughing at myself because I couldn't remember," she said. The script she was given was a long passage about the Brihadeshwar temple, and while she thought she had memorised it, she blanked out on camera. "It was a disaster," she admitted. At that point, Renuka was convinced she wouldn't land the role. But show creator and producer Geeta Doctor saw something in her that went beyond words. "Geeta loved my smile," she said, adding that it turned out to be the deciding factor. Her warm and cheerful presence was seen as the perfect counterpoint to co-anchor Siddharth Kak's serious and scholarly tone. That small, spontaneous moment changed everything. Renuka Shahane was cast, and Surabhi went on to become one of Doordarshan's most cherished shows of the 1990s, remembered fondly by an entire generation.

Exclusive: Riddhima Kapoor Sahni Shares Her Love For Yoga, Says "I Feel Lively And Fitter Now"

World International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 to promote yoga as a powerful tool for physical vitality, mental clarity, and spiritual harmony. As the world rolls out mats and enjoys yoga, renowned jewellery designer Riddhima Kapoor Sahni is one who has always loved yoga. Born into the legendary Kapoor family, Riddhima's lineage is steeped in cinematic history. Daughter of veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, and sister to Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor, Riddhima finally had her moment in the sun, on the screen, with her appearance on Netflix's Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives. She also runs a children's clothing brand, is a mother, and now an actor. She does it all while looking fabulous. In case you wonder what she does to stay fit - it is yoga. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni shared her love for yoga and what keeps her going. Riddhima Kapoor On Her "Love Affair" With Yoga Before yoga became a definite part of her life, Riddhima was not a fan. She first tried yoga after her mother Neetu Kapoor urged her to enrol at Bharat Thakur's yoga sessions. A self-professed fan of high-intensity workouts and gym training, she confesses she found yoga "boring" in the beginning. "I thought it was too boring. It didn't work for me at the time." But things changed after she got married to Bharat Sahni and pregnant with her daughter Samara, who is now 14 years old. In 2011, while she was expecting Samara, Riddhima was advised by her doctor to stop performing high-impact exercise and switch to something lighter. "My doctor asked me to do something light and suggested yoga. That's when my love affair with yoga started. It's been 14 years now and I've never looked back." Yoga in the Kapoor-Sahni household is now a family affair. Her daughter Samara joins her on the mat, occasionally mirroring poses. In 2023, Riddhima posted a video with Neetu Kapoor and Samara, celebrating three generations of women practising yoga together. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Riddhima Kapoor Sahni (RKS) (@riddhimakapoorsahniofficial) "Yoga Helps Calm Me Down": Riddhima Kapoor Sahni Yoga is believed to be beneficial for both physical as well as mental wellbeing. According to a study published in Harvard Health Publishing, yoga offers mental health benefits, such as reduced anxiety, stress, and signs of depression. Yoga has become a big part of Riddhima's daily ritual. What really draws her to yoga is not limited to fitness, it also brings the promise of clarity. "It helps me declutter my mind, and it has really helped me de-stress. I feel livelier and fitter after doing yoga. I feel good about myself, which is what matters at the end of the day. It's not about physical appearance or how you're looking on the outside. It's all about how you feel, and I feel good." Along with yoga, Riddhima relies on meditation. "While yoga helps me, meditation helps calm me down. Yoga and meditation has helped me beat stress." She has made it a habit to meditate every day."I feel that 10-15 minutes of meditation can help me clear my mind, and whatever bothers me vanishes." Riddhima also keeps distractions such as phones away during her yoga and meditation sessions. "I practice phone detox and dedicate that time to keep myself calm." And she even shows up on days when she does not feel like it. A Healthy Lifestyle Also Plays A Pivotal Role The holistic approach she has towards yoga also extends to her diet and lifestyle. And it can be even more difficult when you belong to a family known for their love for food. When asked how she manages her love for food while keeping herself fit, Riddhima shares, "I don't diet. I don't believe in the concept of fad diets because diets are temporary. You have to make your diet a part of a healthy way of living." She prefers having fresh, home-cooked food, but enjoys her binge days in "moderation". "I don't believe in starving myself. If you deprive yourself of something you want it twice as much. Overdoing and underdoing are both bad for you. You have to strike a balance and eat in moderation - that is the key." Riddhima recommends and practises a simple mantra - "Follow a balanced diet, drink enough water, and, of course, practise yoga".
