Happy Birthday, Wes Anderson! Three underrated films that capture the wry essence of the auteur

Hindustan Times01-05-2025

Hollywood director Wes Anderson's name has always been synonymous with a droll tweness, and if you call yourself a fan, you must already be familiar with what it feels like to step into one of his carefully curated worlds full of melancholic humour. As the director celebrates another trip around the sun today, turning a ripe 56, here are some of his best renditions of a walk into the trembling psyche of being human in spring colours.
Ah, The Royal Tenenbaums, arguably one of Anderson's most popular works that thrust him into the bosom of stardom, this film is an American tragedy wrapped in retro pastels. The story revolves around three emotionally stunted genius siblings whose lives are upended after they hear about their father's (played by Gene Hackman) imminent death. A rich portrayal of the dysfunctional American family, the film captures Anderson's trademark eccentricities while touching upon heavy themes of familial strife with a laughable sense of melancholy. A must-watch if you're down in the dumps, or just want to feel a sense of art-induced mild irony.
More for the seasoned fans of Anderson, if you haven't seen The French Dispatch, you're missing out! Set in the city of Ennui, the film follows a three-part narrative that's hard to follow yet indulgent to watch: once you have decided what's happening, it's easy to follow the haphazard flow of the story. As a group of journalists from The French Dispatch newspaper come together to reflect on their recently deceased Editor-in-Chief. The first segment, featuring Benicio Del Toro as a jailed artist, is a deliciously droll portrayal of obsession, love, and bizarre circumstances. It's classic Anderson, but this time, the mundane and the crazy are intertwined, giving us a film that's more about what's not said than what is.
Last on the list is Anderson's adaptation of author Roald Dahl's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular Henry Sugar, a rich man who, after finding a strange book, decides to learn the mysterious Great Yogi's art of seeing through objects. The result? A whimsical adventure with a bit of charm and a sprinkle of gambling madness, this short film is the perfect example of Anderson's ability to turn a simple story into a world full of absurd wonder. And honestly, you can never go wrong with a Dahl adaptation.
So, there you have it, three of Anderson's lesser-known films that you should watch the next time you're in the mood for a new movie! Happy birthday to the king of retro pastel.

From 'English' vegetables to desi roots

Agencies Indian vegetables, like regional languages, were long regarded as uncool and rejected in favour of "English" staples such as carrots, beans and cauliflower. "Indian" dishes promoted by the culinary devis of the 1960s and 1970s rather than the rustic staples of 'native places' became the hallmark of upward mobility and even homogeneity, especially in the growing metros. By the second decade of the 21st century we were well on the way to "One India, One Cuisine".Then, deracinated urban classes began to experience a yearning for their roots, aided by a growing pride in all things desi. Even as they lived out their American dream in suburban condominium complexes in Gurgaon or Goregaon, Indians began to show interest in eating local and understanding rural, subaltern culinary histories. That's also when social media happened, and suddenly their new-found appetite for culinary legacy could be sated by a myriad of content providers. This week I was fascinated by a video of a chirpy, toothless Bengali village granny with wispy grey hair tied in a bun and a creased cotton saree wrapped in the old-fashioned 'aatpoure' style, cooking a dish made with the green stem of the elephant yam and small shrimps, on a wood-fired terracotta chulha. Clearly her grandson (the cameraman) realised that gas cylinders which her family could access via the PM's Ujjwala Yojana would have spoiled the bucolic tableau! A well-used grinding stone, a sharp bonti (Bengal's traditional curved iron blade set on a wooden base), a few stainless steel and plastic utensils, and a spatula comprised her kitchen kit, set under a palm-leaf thatched shelter with a lovely view of greenery and grey rain clouds. No ingredient labels, no kitchen aid brands, no product placements. Just weather-worn fingers expertly slicing, dicing, grinding and stirring while she cheerfully answered her grandson's questions. The dish she made had minimal oil and spices: just green chilli-yellow mustard seed paste, poppy seed paste, nigella seeds and turmeric; no onion-garlic-ginger, no garam masala. Most people do not know this facet of homestyle Bengali cooking, given the decades of publicity for the stereotypical wedding fare of rich, oily kalias and kosha mangsho. She even dispelled her grandson's fear that the stem would give him an itchy throat, which sometimes happens with yams. Fear is the reason most cityslickers avoided eating shoots, roots, leaves and all 'unknown' desi ingredients till a new interest in rustic fare made them set aside apprehensions. Most took a cue, of course, from the West's foraged food craze. Mushrooms have an international appeal and yams do not, so Indian elites were willing to profess a liking for fungi even if they ranged from pricey truffles and morels to deathcaps, but steered clear of potentially itchy tubers. Until now! Earlier this month, an Indian restaurant in New York, helmed by a chef who unapologetically presents the humble ingredients but robust flavours of his Tamil village, was adjudged the best eatery in the Big Apple. In India, restaurant cuisine has moved beyond Mughlai and other mainstream genres to brilliant riffs by star chefs, and even homestyle regional cuisines by home cooks. Truly rural flavours, however, have remained largely untasted in cities barring a few pop-ups. But now social media has given rural Indians the chance to take their no-fuss, no-waste, hyper-seasonal and hyper-local food to far-away audiences. I found more rural Bengali grannies with thousands of followers posting cooking videos on social media with a little help from grandkids, like plump 'nonnas' popularised rustic Italian cooking. Today, rural India's cool, deft paatis, ajis and thammas are doing the same. Thanks to them we will remain "One India, Many Cuisines". Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen jested that his wife Ella Victoria finds him more attractive after he breached the elusive 2900 rating in freestyle chess. The 34-year-old became the first player to cross the milestone in the recently released freestyle chess rankings compiled by the Freestyle Chess Organisation. 'My wife is way more attracted to me now that I've achieved 2900," the five-time World Champion joked. The couple tied the knot earlier in the year, and Victoria is often pictured accompanying her husband to his events. Carlsen sits atop the table with a rating of 2909, followed by American GM Hikaru Nakamura at 2818. Fabiano Caruana stands third with 2804 while Indian GM Praggnanandhaa fourth with 2773. Ian Nepomniachtchi comes in fifth followed by Vincent Keymer and Alireza Firouzja, as India Arjun Erigaisi is positioned 8th with 2758. Vidit Gujarati is place 16th in the table with compatriot Aravindh Chithambaram stands 22nd on the liust with 2707, while reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju was placed 26th in the table with a rating of 2701. Carlsen clinched the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam title in Paris earlier in the year, and doubled down on his run with a historic win at Grenke Freestyle Chess Open 2025 as the Norwegian claimed 9 win out of as many matches, six of whom were Grandmasters. Carlsen has teased the idea of breaching the elusive rating earlier stating, 'The goal of breaking 2900 has mostly been about motivating myself to be in top shape when I play classical chess." 'I've put that goal on hold a bit, so instead I'll bring it back up if I get closer," the 34-year-old had said. First Published: June 20, 2025, 19:17 IST
