Eco-panel hearing on Sharavathi project today: Karnataka Energy Min George

BENGALURU: The environment committee is having a look at the execution of the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project in Shivamogga. Energy Minister KJ George said here on Monday that the committee will hold a meeting on the project on Tuesday.
George said he was not aware of the details of the report prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) team that visited the site recently.
'The project will be executed. Issues that have been raised pertaining to lion-tailed macaque and other wildlife are being examined,' he said.
The energy department has sought 54 hectares of land for the project, while offering alternative land to the forest department.
'Only a few environmentalists are raising objections. We had obtained permission to conduct a study in the area, and it was done. If the project is executed, it will generate 2,000 MW of power along with a proper storage facility. All pipes and cables will be laid underground,' he added.

An official source stated, "The proposal has been put on hold following communication from Madhya Pradesh. Given the significance of the event, both state govts are keen to ensure the participation of their respective chief ministers and plan a more elaborate ceremony. " Sources indicated that the agreement was initially expected to be finalised in Jan 2025. While Rajasthan has approved the agreement, Madhya Pradesh's approval is still pending. An official from Rajasthan's forest department mentioned, "Earlier too, Rajasthan expressed readiness for the signing and formally requested Madhya Pradesh to propose a suitable date and venue. However, Madhya Pradesh's additional principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) said amendments had been made to the draft." The draft MoU outlines broader goals, including using the cheetah as a flagship species to restore open forests and savanna ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity and ecological balance. Under the proposed terms, both states will permit the capture, recapture, or release of cheetahs in emergency situations, adhering to the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 and protocols set by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The MoU, once signed, will remain effective for five years, with reviews every two years to assess progress and the possibility of extension based on mutual agreement. "Any modifications will require written consent from both parties," the draft states.

AI to improve efficiency in Karnataka's power sector

BENGALURU: The energy department is looking at utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring in professionalism in operations and management of electricity distribution to improve Karnataka's power sector. Energy Minister KJ George told the media on Wednesday that the department will use AI in future, but asserted there will be no job cuts. AI will help only to a certain extent, he said. Officials said AI will help in better skill management, and to control financial and power losses. AI is already being used to monitor power supply to make generation projections for the future. George said the Central government had in-principle agreed to give two years time to implement the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to give smart meters to all consumers at low rates. At present, the scheme ends in December 2025. He said if this is done, smart meters will be distributed to all consumers at nominal rates, like in other states. Implementation of smart meters was discussed with Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal Khattar recently, he added. The plan to levy 2 per cent cess on government departments that have to clear pending dues of around Rs 10,000 crore was okayed. The list of defaulting agencies include the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Urban Development departments, and BWSSB. George said smart meters cannot be given to consumers at nominal rates, unless all dues of energy supply companies (Escoms) are cleared. This is one of the conditions of the Central government. He said a proposal will be placed before the cabinet to include 40,000 farmers into the Kusum-C bracket, pending clearance for implementation of the Kusum-B scheme. This has been discussed with the chief minister and an additional Rs 10,000 crore will be needed. Energy department officials said transmission and distribution losses are being reduced from the existing 2.9 per cent and 9 per cent to 2.2 per cent. KPCL Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey said three 765kV sub-stations are being set up in Central, North and South Karnataka, and 37 sub-stations of 400kV capacity each are being set up across Karnataka.
