Rome's 'Hollywood on the Tiber' plans comeback despite Trump tariff threat
Europe's largest film studio Cinecitta is aiming to re-launch Italy as a movie powerhouse, even as U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on foreign productions cast a shadow over the film industry globally. Cinecitta, the homonymous company that manages Rome's historic film studio, approved a five-year plan this week backed by the EU's post-COVID Recovery Fund, which includes building new high-tech sound stages and boosting production capacity by 60% by 2026. "We want to lead the game," said CEO Manuela Cacciamani. "Cinecitta must be a factory that works at full capacity... with excellence as a minimum standard." Founded in 1937 under Benito Mussolini's fascist rule, Cinecitta became known as the "Hollywood on the Tiber". It has hosted over 3,000 films, attracting world-renowned directors such as Martin Scorsese, Federico Fellini and Francis Ford Coppola. The company is targeting revenue of 51.9 million euros ($58.8 million) in 2029, almost double the 2024 figure, and aims to turn a 4.3-million-euro net profit after a loss of 11.6 million euros last year. Trump has said he will impose a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States to save Hollywood from "a very fast death", but has issued few details on how the levy would work. The tariff plan threatens to disrupt the current industry set-up, in which big U.S. productions rely on the services of studios around the world that can provide expertise, cheaper costs and striking location scenery. Trump's sweeping tariffs were temporarily reinstated by a federal appeals court on Thursday, a day after a U.S. trade court blocked them, ruling Trump had exceeded his authority. Cacciamani told Reuters Cinecitta was monitoring "with the utmost care" developments regarding the tariff threat. "The hope is that two historic powers of cinema worldwide, (Italy and the U.S.) which owe so much to each other, will continue to cooperate," she said. Italy's tax credit of up to 40% for film production is "among the most competitive worldwide", Cinecitta said, helping attract some of last year's international successes such as "Emilia Perez" and the papal thriller "Conclave". Among projects slotted for filming in Cinecitta this year is Mel Gibson's "The Resurrection of The Christ", a sequel to his 2004 "The Passion of The Christ". Gibson is one of Trump's "Special Ambassadors" in Hollywood, tasked with rescuing the U.S. film industry alongside actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone. His next film, being shot in Italy, would be exposed to the tariff. —Reuters

RM makes AMAs history as solo star, upholding BTS's global legacy
RM, the leader of world-renowned K-pop group BTS, has etched his name in music history once again — this time as a solo artist — by winning Favourite K-pop Artist at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs). Currently serving in the South Korean military, Kim Namjoon, known to millions as RM, became the first artist to win this prestigious category both as a solo performer and as part of BTS, cementing not only his personal legacy but also reinforcing the enduring global influence of the band. Despite his absence from the awards ceremony due to military duties, RM took to Instagram Stories to thank fans. Reposting BTS's official announcement, he wrote: 'Thank you for your love and support, #BTSARMY 💜.' In another post, he sparked excitement by hinting at his return, writing: 'It will be soon, seriously, soon,' in response to an article about BTS's upcoming reunification. RM's victory was bolstered by the success of his second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person , released in May 2024. The record earned both critical acclaim and commercial success — topping Billboard's Top Rap Albums Chart, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, and securing six spots in the Top 10 Rap Digital Song Sales. BTS: Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehung, Jeon Jungkook His artistic evolution was also documented in 'RM: Right People, Wrong Place', a film released worldwide in December 2024 after its premiere at the 29th Busan International Film Festival. RM's solo success adds to BTS's phenomenal legacy — a group that has not only reshaped the global music scene but also broken barriers for Asian artists worldwide. With all members expected to reunite in late 2025 following the completion of military service by RM, V, Suga, Jimin, and Jungkook, fans are eagerly awaiting BTS's full-fledged return. Jin and J-Hope, the first to complete service in 2023, are already back in the public eye, setting the stage for what promises to be a monumental comeback for the world's most influential pop act.

Stanley Tucci says hosting tougher than acting as he launches culinary travel series
Stanley Tucci is no stranger to hosting a television series, but when asked how it compares to acting, the Oscar nominee is clear: "Hosting is harder because you have to be yourself. "And the reason actors become actors is they probably don't want to be themselves all the time," he said, laughing. Known for films like "Conclave", "Julie & Julia", "The Devil Wears Prada" and "The Hunger Games", Tucci embarks on a culinary journey across Italy in his new show, "Tucci in Italy". From sampling traditional knödel in Trentino Alto-Adige to tucking into succulent porchetta in Lazio, the five-episode series sees him talking to chefs, farmers, shopkeepers and everyday Italians about their food and traditions. He describes it as "an exploration of what makes up Italy through the prism of food". "(Italians) live to eat and everybody else eats to live... You can talk to a cab driver and you can talk to someone of the they'll talk about food in the same way," Tucci said in an interview with Reuters. "And were they to meet, they would talk about food in the same way and they would talk in-depth about it. I don't know another culture that would do that, where it just breaks down all boundaries." In the show, Tucci travels to five regions - Tuscany, Lombardy, Trentino Alto-Adige, Lazio and Abruzzo. While not a fan of spice, Tucci said he was willing to try anything: "I sort of did, I think, on this trip. There was lots of offal, which I love." "When I was watching the episodes again, I was like, there really is a lot of offal in these that's just a part of what Italy is and that's what they eat." Tucci, the author of several cookbooks, has Italian origins and has lived as well as visited the country before - including for his previous travel and food show, "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy". "The more I travel through Italy, the more I of people in my childhood," he said. "You might see somebody who looks like your aunt or your great aunt or your it makes you feel connected to the people that you've lost." "Tucci in Italy" streams on Disney+ from May 19 and premieres on National Geographic on May 21. —Reuters
