T.N. government plans series of events to mark Karunanidhi's birth anniversary on June 3
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is scheduled to take part in a series of events to mark the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on June 3, 2025.
Mr. Stalin will pay floral tributes to Karunanidhi's statue at Omandurar Government Estate campus on Anna Salai at 9.30 a.m., an official release stated.
With the government issuing orders to observe June 3 as 'Semmozhi Day', a function has been organised at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, where Mr. Stalin would release new books published by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil and distribute certificates to candidates who have completed their doctorates.
Mr. Stalin will also distribute enhanced financial aid to elderly Tamil scholars and would also distribute prizes to students who excelled in various competitions.

Government appoints Special Officer to administer Pennington Public Library in Srivilliputtur
A Government Order has been issued appointing an officer in the rank of Deputy Registrar of Societies as the Special Officer of the 150-year-old Pennington Public Library in Srivilliputtur on Monday. The District Registrar (Administration), Sivaganga, V.P. Kavinilavu, has been appointed as the Special Officer. However, the present administrative committee, led by the vice-president, V. Muthu Battar and secretary, A.M.M. Radha Sankar, did not allow the Special Officer to take charge of the library. 'When the officer came here with an order to take charge, we refused to permit her as the present administrative committee has not received any such order to hand over the charge,' said Mr. Muthu Battar. The committee has sought 10 days to hand over the charge, he added. However, Srivilliputtur Tahsildar, V. Balamurugan, who had accompanied the Special Officer, said that she had assumed office immediately. 'The committee has sought time only to hand over the charge,' he added. The district administration said that simmering differences between two groups had led to the interference of the Government, Mr. Muthu Battar claimed that no such tug of war existed. The previous administrative committee that was in charge for six long years as against the by-law that stipulated only three-year term had vacated the office. 'We assumed office only six months back,' he said. The committee had got a stay order against the Collector, who is also the ex-officio president of the library committee, in interfering with the administration. However, Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan had demanded various details like properties under the administration of the library and the revenue generated through them and the expenses incurred for running the library. 'We got a stay against the Collector's letter seeking these details,' he added. Menawhile, the G.O. said that in view of the prevailing confusion as both rival factions were competing with each other to take over the administrative panel, the Special Officer had been appointed to set right the administration. The library started in the British era in 1875 was celebrating its 150 years in 2025. It has got a rich collection of over 69,000 books in Tamil and English along with over 4,000 rare books in both languages.

SC stays further coercive action against man facing multiple FIRs for social media posts
'Hate speech will not take us anywhere,' the Supreme Court said Monday as it stayed further arrest of Wazahat Khan, accused of allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his social media posts and on whose complaint West Bengal police arrested law student Sharmishta Panoli on similar charges. Issuing notice on his plea seeking consolidation of FIRs registered against Khan in Assam, Maharashtra, Delhi and Haryana over his social media posts, a bench of Justices K V Viswanathan and N K Singh directed against any coercive action in the other FIRs or any other FIR that may be registered in future over the same allegations. The bench noted that Khan was undergoing police custody in an FIR registered at the Golf Link police station in Kolkata, and was also remanded to judicial custody in another FIR lodged in Bengal. During the hearing, Justice Viswanathan remarked orally 'these hate speeches get us nowhere'. Citing a Tamil saying, he added '…a wound inflicted by fire may heal, but one inflicted by tongue will not'. Justice Viswanathan said, 'I have been thinking, someday we will get into it…incitement to violence is a test for the speech — should it be physical violence? Need not be. It can also be verbal.' Senior Advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu appearing for Khan said the FIRs were registered in retaliation to the complaint he had made against Panoli. The bench asked why he had not attached the allegedly offensive tweets. Naidu said he had deleted those tweets and apologised before the FIRs were lodged. Apparently conveying his disapproval of the social media posts by Khan, Naidu said he is 'reaping what he has sown' but had 'learnt the lesson the hard way'. He said he was only praying to consolidate the different FIRs so that trial can happen in one place. The bench said that the alleged social media posts were 'all hate mongering' and would not fall within the ambit of free speech.
