Kilmar Abrego Garcia likely to be held by ICE after DOJ release order
Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., speaks with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran immigrant living in Maryland, in San Salvador, El Salvador on Thursday, April 17, 2025. On Sunday, a judge ordered Abrego Garcia to be released from Department of Justice custody. File Photo by President Nayib Bukele/UPI | License Photo June 23 (UPI) -- A federal judge has ordered the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, but the Salvadoran migrant is expected to remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody as the Trump administration appeals the court's decision. Abrego Garcia, who has been living with his family in Maryland, was wrongly deported in March to El Salvador, where he was detained in the infamous CECOT prison. The 29-year-old was returned to the United States earlier this month to face two charges related to human smuggling in Tennessee, to which he has pleaded not guilty. President Donald Trump's Justice Department asked the court for permission to detain the migrant amid litigation. But U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes in Tennessee issued her order Sunday, denying the Trump administration's request and acknowledging that, despite her order, Abrego Garcia will likely be transferred to ICT custody rather than remain detained by the Justice Department. "Perhaps the sole circumstance about which the government and Abrego Abrego may agree in this case is the likelihood that Abrego will remain in custody regardless of the outcome of the issues raised in the government's motion for detention," she said. "That suggests the Court's determination of the detention issues is little more than an academic exercise." ICE custody issues fall outside the authority of Holmes' court. In her order, she said Abrego Garcia has the right to due process. She also accused the Justice Department of overstating the allegations against the defendant. Abrego Garcia's charges stem from a traffic stop in November 2022. Nine other Hispanic men without documentation and luggage were in the vehicle. The charging document accuses him of being a member of the MS-13 gang. It alleges that he and others conspired from at least 2016 smuggle migrants into the United States. Holmes, in her Sunday order, pointed out how the Justice Department interchangeably used "smuggling" and "trafficking," which have distinct meanings in law, with the latter involving the movement of a person against their will, and the former with their cooperation. She also highlighted a lack of evidence on the government's part in attempting to tie Abrego Garcia to smuggling minors. The judge also criticized the government's application for detention ahead of trial based on on allegations of the defendant's gang membership. She said "the government cannot simply rely on the general reputation of a particular street gang" to argue that Abrego Garcia poses a dangerous threat to society. And while gang membership may meet the threshold for detention, the government must prove he is a member of the gang -- allegations that Abrego Garcia has denied. "Overall, the Court cannot find from the evidence presented that Abrego's release clearly and convincingly poses an irremediable danger to other persons or to the community," Holmes said. The Justice Department is widely expect to appeal.

Teen girls among 145 stabbed with syringes across France at popular music festival, 12 sickos arrested
Nearly 150 concertgoers, many of them teenage girls, were jabbed with a syringe in a bizarre attack at a nationwide music festival in France Saturday, and a dozen suspects have been nabbed in connection with the disturbing barrage, according to officials. Local and national law enforcement are investigating the wave of deranged incidents in which suspects wielding syringes with unknown contents jabbed 145 victims at the popular Fêtes de la Musique, or World Music Day, celebrations across the country, causing several to be hospitalized. 3 Police in France are investigating a bizarre syringe attack at Saturday's Fêtes de la Musique, or World Music Day, celebrations on Saturday. POOL/AFP via Getty Images The first attack was reported to police at 9:15 p.m. on the Rue du Palais in Metz in northeastern France, according to Mayor François Grosdidie. Authorities received a report of a suspect involved in one of the attacks and used security footage to track him down, Grosdidie said. 'The municipal police identified him on Rue Serpenoise, arrested him, and made him available to the National Police and the Justice Department,' he added. 'I hope that the investigation, particularly through the examination of his cellphone, will lead to the identification of other attackers.' Firefighters responded promptly to each attack, deploying seven emergency vehicles and creating a staging area for the victims on Place d'Armes, Grosdidie said. French officials were anticipating unprecedented crowds for this year's Fêtes de la Musique, a free music festival held every year on the summer solstice. 3 Millions of people across France attended Saturday's Fêtes de la Musique. Officials estimated that 50,000 people attended the concerts in Metz while 'unprecedented crowds' descended upon Paris. Across France, there were millions of people who took to the streets Saturday evening for the festival, according to La Monde. None of them were deterred by posts on Snapchat and other social media sites warning of the bizarre syringe attack. The Interior Ministry said 145 victims across the nation reported being stabbed with needles, with Paris police officials probing 13 cases in the capital. Officials did not specify if the syringes were filled with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by sexual assailants to make women and girls vulnerable to sexual assault, La Monde reported. As of Sunday, at least three people reported feeling sick after getting jabbed by the syringe-wielding maniacs. 3 Police arrested 12 suspects whom they believe were involved in the twisted syringe attacks, the Interior Ministry said. Shilo Sanders clowns brother Shedeur over speeding ticket drama
Shilo did Shedeur dirty. The middle Sanders son poked fun at his older brother in a new video — part of his 'Tampa Food Tour' YouTube series — when he made a joke about Shedeur's recent issues with speeding in Ohio. In the clip, Shilo is crossing a street in Tampa when he takes the jab at the Browns rookie quarterback. Advertisement Getty Images 'We out here in Tampa. We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here,' Shilo said in the clip before making himself laugh. Shilo was, of course, referencing Shedeur's recent issues with speeding tickets, which made headlines last week. Advertisement Shedeur was stopped and cited for going 101 mph, 41 miles over the posted speed limit, on June 17 in a Cleveland suburb and had been stopped two weeks before that in another stop, where he was cited for 91 mph in a 75 mph zone. A spokesperson for the Browns told that Shedeur was 'taking care of the tickets' and that the team had addressed the citations with him. Shilo Sanders Shilo Sanders/YouTube Advertisement In body cam footage during the June 17 stop, police officers commented that he had been 'cool' with them during the interaction and that they were giving a break to the woman who was also stopped with him. During the stop, Shedeur didn't initially think he was going as fast as police said he was. 'I'm like, you were 100 percent going that fast, it's all on camera, man,' one officer could be heard telling another as he sat in the police cruiser. Advertisement Shedeur, a fifth round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, purportedly addressed the situation in a video posted on social media this week, which showed a conversation between him and teammate David Njoku's charity. 'I've made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them,' Shedeur said. 'I made some, you know, not great choices. … I learned.'
