Warner Bros. Discovery Showcases the Making of India's Iconic Pamban Bridge with RVNL
At the southernmost tip of India, where the Bay of Bengal embraces the Gulf of Mannar, lies the island of Rameswaram — a land steeped in mythology, devotion, and timeless beauty. Nestled between the mainland town of Mandapam and the sacred shores of Rameswaram, a marvel of modern engineering has quietly risen: the New Pamban Bridge.
This story of steel, salt, and spirit is now being vividly brought to life by Warner Bros. Discovery and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), in a special feature titled 'Engineering Wonders: The Pamban Saga – A Marvel of Steel, A Testament to Progress.'
For over a century, the Pamban stretch has been more than just a crossing—it has been a vital lifeline. Since the original bridge opened in 1914, it has carried not only trains but also traditions—ferrying pilgrims to the revered Ramanathaswamy Temple and sustaining generations of fishermen and traders whose lives are intimately tied to these waters.
But time and tide spare no structure. Ravaged by relentless cyclones and the demands of a modernizing world, the old bridge had reached its limits.
Enter the new Pamban Bridge: India's first vertical lift railway Sea Bridge, a bold statement of vision and resilience. Crafted with cutting-edge technology at its core, this new structure redefines what is possible in coastal infrastructure.
'Rameswaram holds profound cultural and economic significance, especially for the many fishing communities that depend on the Pamban channel,' said Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways.
'Building a bridge in such a challenging marine environment—with salt-laden winds, powerful waves, and extended monsoons—required extraordinary engineering. Every part, from foundation to superstructure, was meticulously designed.
Collaborating with some of the world's finest engineers, we have created a bridge that reflects the spirit of a New India—forward-looking, ambitious, and capable.'
The bridge's location posed immense challenges.
Set in an unforgiving marine zone marked by fierce winds, corrosive salt air, and unpredictable tides, the engineering feat was anything but ordinary. Vertical lift technology—a first in India and only the second of its kind worldwide—was chosen for its unique ability to allow both ships and trains to pass seamlessly, ensuring uninterrupted maritime traffic.
To capture this momentous transformation, Warner Bros.
Discovery was granted rare access by RVNL, gaining exclusive access to document the construction and the stories behind it.
'Bringing the story of this iconic bridge to the screen has been an inspiring journey,'
shared Tanaz Mehta, Head of Advertising Revenues, South Asia, Warner Bros. Discovery.
'This project gave us a chance to go beyond engineering—to capture the heart, heritage, and hope that the New Pamban Bridge symbolizes for so many.
It's a story of an India moving forward—firmly rooted in its past, yet confidently reaching toward the future.'
More than a technical showcase, the film is a human story—tracing the hands, minds, and dreams behind every bolt and beam. It delves into the challenges of building deep at sea, the environmental considerations shaping every decision, and the spirit of innovation driving progress.
As the new bridge stands tall over the Palk Strait—stronger, smarter, and built to last a century—the documentary reminds us that infrastructure is more than just connectivity.
It is legacy.

Launched in April, AC suburban train services fail to attract commuters
The first air-conditioned suburban train service, launched by the Southern Railway in April, has failed to garner positive response from the commuters, despite the sweltering heat. The 12-car AC electric multiple unit (EMU), operated on the Beach-Chengalpattu via Tambaram route, does not carry even half the sitting capacity (1,120 persons), with the average patronage being only 1,500 commuters per day. While the Metro services in the city reach full capacity during peak hours, the AC EMU is yet to touch even 50% of its total carrying capacity (3,798 persons). The AC EMU services were allotted to the Chennai Division after several a second unit is expected. Designed like Metro trains with automatic door system, the EMUs have vestibular coaches, stainless steel seats, and fans for additional air circulation. On one hand, commuters point to the high fare, while on the other, transport activists attribute the lukewarm response to poor planning of operations. Dayanand Krishnan, a train enthusiast and resident of Chitlapakkam, cites the exorbitant fare as the probable reason for poor patronage. In a petition to the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Mr. Krishnan sought reduction of the fare, which has been fixed at ₹85 from Beach to Tambaram, and ₹105 from Chengalpattu to Beach. Comparing the city's AC EMUs with the Vande Metro operating from Bhuj to Anjar in Gujarat, he said the latter, which had a far better technology with ergonomic seats, charged only ₹55 for a 42-km ride as against the ₹85 for a 30-km ride between Tambaram and Beach. While the minimum fare is fixed at ₹35 for up to 10 km, the monthly season ticket price is fixed at ₹2,115 from Beach to Chengalpattu, and ₹1,705 from Beach to Tambaram. Regular commuters said better planning of operations could increase patronage of the services. At present, the AC EMU, which is attached to the Tambaram shed, is being operated on a longer route — from Beach to Chengalpattu — involving a travel time of more than one-and-a-half hours. It is also operated for 10 services only. T. Raghunathan, a regular suburban commuter from Perungalathur, said they should be operated as short services from Tambaram to Beach rather than till Chengalpattu. He called for more services during morning and evening peak hours, parallel to the suburban services, which are usually jam-packed. The commuters also want the AC EMU services to be operated on the west section, at least between Beach and Avadi. A senior official of the Chennai Division said the AC EMU fare had been fixed based on ones charged for AC train services in Mumbai. He added that they would examine the feasibility of operating more services from Beach to Tambaram.

ATTENTION train passengers! Indian Railways announces BIG change in Tatkal ticket booking, Aadhaar OTP must from…, no agent bookings in first 30 minutes for… Starting July 15, 2025, all Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised railway agents will require an extra layer of verification through OTP authentication. By Analiza Pathak Edited by Analiza Pathak Advertisement Indian Railways is bringing new rules for Tatkal ticket booking from July 1, and these changes are meant to make the system more fair and reduce cheating. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that from July 1, people booking Tatkal tickets will have to do OTP verification. This means when you book a Tatkal ticket, you will get a code on your phone which you'll need to enter to complete the booking. This change is being made to stop agents and middlemen from blocking tickets and selling them at high prices. Advertisement === The minister also shared that the train reservation chart, which is now made just 4 hours before the train leaves, will soon be made 24 hours before departure. This will help passengers with waiting or RAC tickets plan better, especially if they don't get confirmed seats. Indian Railways has already started trying out this new charting rule in the Bikaner division, and passengers there have given good feedback. The plan is to expand it across India soon. These steps are being taken to make sure real passengers get a fair chance and ticket bookings become more transparent and smoother for everyone. This adds one more step of safety to make sure tickets aren't misused. 4. Booking time limit for agents To give regular passengers a better chance at getting Tatkal tickets, agents will not be allowed to book tickets in the first 30 minutes after bookings open. Here's how the rule works: For AC classes: Agents cannot book between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM For non-AC classes: Agents cannot book between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM This gives normal passengers the first chance to book tickets without competition from agents. Indian Railways mandates E-Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal tickets: Here's how to link your IRCTC with Aadhaar
IRCTC Tatkal New Booking Rules 2025: The Ministry of Railways is considering big modifications to the Tatkal ticketing process in order to strengthen it and combat fraud by mandating e-Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal reservations. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, announced on X that e-Aadhaar authentication will be used shortly for Tatkal ticket purchases. Bharatiya Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need. — Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) June 4, 2025 According to a senior ministry official, e-Aadhaar authentication would be the next stage, but there is already a facility in place to authenticate an IRCTC account using Aadhaar to purchase 24 tickets per month. The official stated that the idea for e-Aadhaar authentication is part of a campaign against the use of automated programs to purchase tickets online, further highlighting that the railways have deactivated and barred over 24 million users in the last six months, and around 2 million accounts have been marked as suspicious and are being investigated. Starting July 1, users identified with Aadhaar can book Tatkal tickets using the IRCTC's official website or mobile app. It's important to note that users can add an Aadhaar-authenticated passenger from the master list during the booking process to buy up to 24 extra tickets per month. Step 1: Visit the IRCTC's official website. Step 2: Log in using your credentials. Step 3: Go to the 'My Account' page and choose 'Authenticate User'. Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number or Virtual ID. Step 5: Click the 'Verify Details and Receive OTP' button. Step 6: Enter the OTP, check the permission form, and then click 'Submit'. Step 7: Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation message.
