The second day of the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals Doha 2025 produced spectacular action and significant upsets as the tournament continues to highlight table tennis excellence from all corners of the globe.
Midway through the day, upset results sent shockwaves through the Lusail Multipurpose Hall and Qatar University venues.
Among the home paddlers, Teenager Sultan Al-Kuwari battled gamely before falling 1-4 to Belgium's world No. 82 Martin Allegro (11-9, 6-11, 6-11, 1-11, 4-11) at Qatar University Hall.
Wild-card Ahmed Korani was out-gunned 0-4 by Chinese Taipei attacker Kuo Guan-Hong (7-11, 7-11, 6-11, 4-11).
In the women's draw, Maryam Ali bowed out 0-4 to Chile's Zhiying Zeng (2-11, 7-11, 1-11, 1-11), while Aia Mohamed salvaged a single game yet succumbed 1-4 to Cuba's Rosalba Aguiar (3-11, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 8-11).
In mixed doubles, Mohammed Abdulwahhab/Aia Mohamed fell 0-3 to Thailand's Thitaphat Preechayan/Kulapassr Vijitviriyagul (5-11, 6-11, 6-11), ending Qatar's interest in the discipline.

Top seed Lin Shidong of China made a powerful start to his Men's Singles campaign, dispatching England's Liam Pitchford 4-0 (11-9, 12-10, 11-2, 11-9) in a commanding performance that demonstrated why he's considered the favourite for the title.
France's Lutz stuns

In what must be considered one of the event's most stunning upsets so far, France's Charlotte Lutz produced a sensational performance to defeat Korea Republic's highly-rated Lee Eunhye 4-2 (7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8). After dropping the first two games, Lutz showed remarkable mental fortitude to win four consecutive games.
Czech Republic's Matelova Dismantles 27th Seed
The Czech Republic's Hana Matelova delivered a clinical performance to eliminate Egypt's 27th-seeded Dina Meshref in straight games (11-7, 11-3, 11-3, 11-7), sending a clear message that rankings count for little at this elite level of competition.
Australian duo stuns
German Stars
The 15th-seeded Australian pair of Bae and Sareen pulled off a remarkable victory against the German combination of Franziska and Ovtcharov. The young Australians, featuring ITTF Hopes Programme alumnus Aditya Sareen, dominated proceedings with a straight games 3-0 win, highlighting the effectiveness of the ITTF development pathway.

Madagascar's Hanitra Raharimanana produced one of Day 2's standout performances, defeating Singapore's Loy Ming Ying in a six-game thriller. Meanwhile, Egypt's duo of Abdelaziz and Alhodaby decisively handled Australia's Bae and Psihogios with a commanding 3-0 victory.
Harimoto siblings shine
Japan's teenage sensation Miwa Harimoto (5) lived up to expectations in her World Championships Finals debut, defeating Ukraine's experienced Margaryta Pesotska 4-1. Her brother Tomokazu Harimoto (4) claimed a convincing 4-1 victory over Korea Republic's Lim Jonghoon in their highly-anticipated clash.
Croatia's Arapovic wins marathon match
In one of the day's most gripping contests, Croatia's Hana Arapovic edged Kazakhstan's Zauresh Akasheva 4-3 (8-11, 11-7, 11-1, 6-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-8) in a match that showcased the fighting spirit that defines championship table tennis.

Japan's top-seeded Women's Doubles pair Odo and Yokoi dominated their Ukrainian opponents, while the Harimoto/Matsushima Men's Doubles pairing looked equally impressive in their 3-0 victory, while China's Shi Xunyao delivered a flawless 4-0 performance against Hong Kong, China's Lam Yee Lok.

DPA Berlin Jurgen Klopp has congratulated his former club Liverpool on the high-profile signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz. The Reds will begin their Premier League title defence at Anfield on August 15 against Bournemouth.

Qatar prevail over gritty Vietnam to move into AVC Men's Nations Cup semis
Tribune News Network Doha Qatar overcame a resilient Vietnam 3-2 to move into the semi-finals of the AVC Men's Volleyball Nations Cup in Manama, Bahrain, on Saturday. Defending champions Qatar lost the opening set 29-31, before bouncing back in the next two to win with 25-21, 25-15 wins. Vietnam however hit back and levelled the match 2-2 by winning the fourth set 25-22 fourth set. The top-sseded Qatar however held on in the thrilling decider to claim the set 15-12 and with it the match. Qatar will now meet Pakistan in the semi-final to be played on Monday. It would bea rematch of last year's final, where Qatar emerged victorious to clinch the title. Meanwhile, Pakistan, who also topped their group, continued their impressive form by defeating Indonesia 3-1 in their last eight tie. After going down 20-25 in the opening set, Pakistan hit back strongly by winning the next three sets 25-21, 25-20 and 25-17. On the other side, hosts Bahrain also advanced and will meet South Korea in the other semi-final on Monday. Bahrain swept Chinese Taipei 3-0, while South Korea beat Australia 3-1. The final is scheduled for Tuesday.

Kane stars as Bayern beat Boca Juniors 2-1
PA Media/dpa London Harry Kane scored one and created another in a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors as Bayern Munich became the first side to beat South American opposition at this year's Club World Cup. Kane, who drew a blank during the German's 10-goal mauling of Auckland in their opening game, produced a smart first-half finish. Boca, roared on by a partisan crowd at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, drew level through Miguel Merentiel's stunning solo effort midway through the second half. However, Michael Olise, who had already had an early effort disallowed, scored what proved to be the winner after Kane's composed pass, with victory sealing Bayern's progress from Group C. Olise had a ninth-minute effort ruled out by VAR following a foul on Boca goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin before Kingsley Coman fired an effort over the bar. Kane opened the scoring in the 18th minute when he reacted fastest to a loose ball in the penalty area and guided a left-footed finish into the bottom corner. Bayern should have doubled their advantage moments later, but Coman failed to get a touch as Serge Gnabry flashed the ball across the face of goal. Kevin Zenon's powerful free-kick had to be punched away by Manuel Neuer as Boca threatened for the first time, while at the other end, Marchesin was alert to prevent Olise rounding him following a swift counter-attack. Zenon shot straight at Neuer from 12 yards after Bayern failed to clear their lines, while at the other end Olise had a free-kick well saved by Marchesin and Kane sent a set-piece narrowly over the bar. After the interval, a Boca break ended with Luis Advincula firing over the bar. Olise spurned another decent opening as he shot straight at Marchesin after Raphael Guerreiro's clever dummy. Kane had an effort deflected behind by Lautaro Di Lollo but Boca grew in presence as the half wore on. Merentiel equalized after 66 minutes with a superb effort, gathering the ball near the right touchline and rounding Josip Stanisic before firing past Neuer. Olise restored the Bundesliga champions' lead seven minutes from time as Kane laid the ball back for the France forward and he drove the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Konrad Laimer looked to have added a third after his composed finish following a neat one-two with Thomas Müller, but the Austrian was flagged offside. There was a slight dampener on the result for Bayern as Jamal Musiala left the field injured.
