NPA concludes witness testimony in Chief Albert Luthuli inquest, proceedings postponed to October
Chief Albert Luthuli, whose 1967 death is under renewed scrutiny in a reopened inquest.
The reopened inquest into the death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-apartheid leader Inkosi Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli has been postponed to October for closing arguments after the state concluded its list of witnesses.
On Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that proceedings in the Pietermaritzburg High Court were adjourned to October 13 to 16, 2025.
The NPA, represented by Advocates Ncedile Dunywa, Annah Chuene, Siyabonga Ngcobo and Xolani Msimango, led testimony from an extensive list of witnesses since the inquest resumed on April 14 this year.
'In this reopened inquest, the NPA led an array of witnesses, including South African Police (SAPS) members, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) officials, scene reconstruction and simulation experts, forensic analysts, medical evidence, family members of Chief Luthuli, anti-apartheid activists, and friends of Chief Luthuli,' NPA Regional Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara stated.

ActionSA calls for NPA head Shamila Batohi to be suspended
JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA is calling for the suspension of National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shamila Batohi, saying the organisation has failed to successfully prosecute some high-profile cases. The party was picketing outside the Justice Department in Pretoria on Thursday, to hand over a memorandum of demands which includes that Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi begin the process of removing Batohi. The party has criticised the NPA for its handling of recent matters including the rape case of Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso, and the corruption involving Moroadi Cholota and former African National Congress (ANC) member of Parliament Zizi Kodwa. ActionSA supporters gathered outside the Justice Department offices to hear party leader Herman Mashaba express his dissatisfaction with the performance of the NPA. ALSO READ: • Investigating Directorate to submit fresh extradition application for Guptas • Dearth of investigating skills among reasons for delays in prosecuting big corruption cases, SCOPA hears Mashaba said Batohi is incompetent and has caused dysfunction within the organisation. Kubayi was, however, not available to receive the party's memorandum. Mashaba said Batohi's incompetence can't be justified. "It's an excuse, it's nonsense it's unacceptable, she must not really treat us as South Africans who are fools." The party has given the department seven days to respond. Four men sentenced to long-term imprisonment after murdering woman for funeral policy money
CAPE TOWN - An adoptive father of a mentally disabled woman and three hitmen have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment after murdering the woman for funeral policy money. The four men were sentenced in the Knysna High Court on Friday. Mboneleli Msila was handed two life sentences for masterminding the murder of his adopted daughter, 22-year-old Nosipho Mafana in Plettenberg Bay. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says Mboneleli Msila says hitman Monde Tshemese will also serve two life sentences for his role in Mafana's murder. "Msila arranged for Mafana to take out three funeral policies with three different banks which would pay out an amount of R600,000 if she died an unnatural death." Ntabazalila says Msila and Tshemese planned Mafana's murder along with Mbulelo Jack and Lungisile Lucas. Jack and Lucas were sentenced to 17 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and 17 years for murder. After Mafana's murder in April 2022 Msila's claim for the policy was rejected after it became the subject of a police investigation.
