Rugby world record attempt was 'amazing', say Newbury players

A rugby player has said taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the longest game of women's rugby was "amazing".The game kicked off at Mullingar Rugby Club in County Westmeath, Ireland, at 08:00 BST on Wednesday, concluding just over 29 hours later.Sarah Coleman and Roisin Winston were two of three players from Newbury Rugby Club who took part.Ms Coleman said the experience was "super exhausting" but "absolutely amazing".
She said watching the sun set and rise during the same match was "mental", and that the cold, damp night was harder than the hot days."All you want to do is sleep," said Ms Coleman, whose longest shift was about six and a half hours."I got to about five and I was like 'I cannot do this, my legs are killing me, my feet are so sore'."But she persevered because she knew her teammates needed the rest.Ms Winston also said the team was one of her biggest motivators."We did a really good job of pulling together and looking out for each other," she said.
The event, which also included an attempt on the men's world record, was raising money for three charities - children's rugby charity Wooden Spoon, rugby mental health charity LooseHeadz, and The Lions Trust.LooseHeadz said the women's record of 24 hours, five minutes and 15 seconds was surpassed, with a new benchmark of 26 hours and 33 minutes.The previous men's record, which stood at 30 hours, 29 minutes and 41 seconds, was also surpassed on Thursday afternoon.Both will be subject to official verification by the Guinness World Records.
More than £110,000 was raised at the event with fundraising continuing.Both Ms Coleman and Ms Winston said the fundraising element helped motivate them when the going got tough."It was all about the children and young people we were helping... that's why I did it," said Ms Coleman.Ms Winston said: "It's really nice to know that you've done something really hard but you're making a difference to people who really need it."That was enough keep you going through the night."

Donegal eased past Louth by 2-22 to 0-12 at Ballybofey to reach the last-eight of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. Former Chelsea star 'RESIGNS from his role as manager' with players and staff 'shocked' over his exit - days after he called them a 'pub team'

A former Chelsea star has reportedly resigned from his role as a club's manager. The news has left players and staff stunned and comes just days after he referred to the side as a 'pub team'. During his time at Chelsea he won two Premier League titles as well as the League Cup. He also played for several other Premier League clubs and made 100 appearances at international level. The individual had been in charge of his club since 2021 and had enjoyed success in terms of winning silverware. However, he has now seemingly elected to depart. As reported by RTE, Damien Duff has resigned from his position as manager of Shelbourne. Duff has chosen to leave the club following a 1-0 defeat at home to Derry City on Friday, with Shelbourne currently in sixth place in the table. Shelbourne are in action at home to Waterford on Monday but it appears that Duff won't be in the dugout. Duff was furious after the game against Derry City and claimed that his players had performed like a pub team. He said: 'This (the Premier Division) is your bread and butter. They are in Europe, in the Champions League, because of the league. 'I asked them before the (Derry) game, I said it's 18 days until the Champions League, and I said if they'd have a Champions League mentality, motivation, energy here. 'I'd say pub teams have better motivation, energy, quality than us. Damning words, but I'm correct in saying them.' There was further criticism of his players from Duff as he said: 'I'll never give them an out of three games in a week. As I said to them at half-time, as I said to them at the end of the game, how well did you as individuals prepare? Did you have an hour in the sunshine yesterday or today? 'I'd say I prepared better than some guys. Granted, even when you do prepare, you might come in flat, lack of energy. 'How motivated are you then to pull yourself out of that rut, give yourself a talking to? I think some of our guys just accept it and sit there for the night. 'They are hurting, as they should be and we should be. Duff guided Shelbourne to the league title in the 2024 season, while the club also reached the final of the FAI Cup in 2022, where they were beaten by Derry City. During his playing career Duff represented Chelsea between 2003 and 2006. He also played for Blackburn, Fulham and Newcastle. He had a lengthy international career with the Republic of Ireland, during which he earned a century of caps.

Down beaten by Galway despite second-half fightback

It was a long way back for Down, although they had the breeze in their favour for the second half, but they got the start they needed with two-pointers from Daniel Guinness and Miceal Rooney.A Havern free cut the gap to five, but Galway steadied again with Thompson, Finnerty and Mathew Tierrney all on began to get on top and a second two-pointer from Guinness was the spark as they got to within two, but then passed up further scores with some poor wides which would come back to haunt Mooney hit two points after his introduction as Down remained right in the hunt heading into the home stretch and after Walsh kicked a two-point free to push the gap back to five, Down looked set to break for home as with five to go, Odhran Murdock found some space to lash to the Galway held their nerve, kept the ball and drained the clock until it opened up as Peter Cooke put fellow sub Culhane in to lash the gap at six with just over a minute to go, Magill palmed home at the other end, but vitally, Galway won the restart and John Daly provided the insurance with a late Ryan McEvoy point after the hooter making no odds as Down's fightback came up short with Galway advancing.
