HBCU Contender to Face DII Titan in Week Zero Classic
The stage is set. On August 30, 2025, at historic Legion Field, in Birmingham, Alabama, Clark Atlanta University will face DII powerhouse Valdosta State in the Week Zero Labor Day Classic. A game that should be circled on the calendars of all HBCU football fans.
What makes this game even more electric? It's more than just football. The Week Zero Classic is a multi-day cultural celebration that includes celebrity flag football, live concerts, food festivals, and esports tournaments. And at the heart of it all is one of the most intriguing matchups of the 2025 season: an emerging HBCU contender versus one of Division II's most decorated programs.
Just two years ago, Clark Atlanta University football was struggling, finishing the 21023 season winless at 0-10. But the hiring of head coach Teddy Keaton changed everything.
Keaton, a proven program builder with previous stops at Stillman and Allen University, wasted no time flipping the culture. In 2024, Clark Atlanta shocked the conference with a 7–3-1 record and a trip to the SIAC Championship Game-their first in over a decade.
The engine behind the Panthers' resurgence? Quarterback David Wright, who threw for 3,271 yards and 31 touchdowns. Wright was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Keaton took home Coach of the Year honors.
Now, the Panthers are no longer just a feel-good story. They're a legit contender-and their Week Zero test might be their biggest yet.
Valdosta State is the gold standard of DII football. With four national championships (2004, 2007, 2012, 2018) and countless Gulf South titles, the Blazers have dominated the division for over two decades.
But 2025 marks a new chapter. Former head coach Tremaine Jackson-a rising star in coaching circles-recently accepted the head job at FCS HBCU Prairie View A&M, creating a ripple effect through the program. While Valdosta remains loaded with talent, the departure opens the door for challengers-and Clark Atlanta aims to kick it in.
This game is also the first of two back to back marquee matchups for Valdosta against rising HBCU powers. The Blazers will face Johnson C. Smith University the following week in Charlotte. Games that could help close the gap between PWI dominance and HBCU resurgence in DII football.

Michael Vick and HBCU counterpart come full circle
While Michael Vick was getting selected first overall in the 2001 NFL Draft, HBCU football star Tory Woodbury had to take a different route to the league. Woodbury went undrafted out of Division II HBCU Winston-Salem State, but still managed to earn a spot in the NFL. He starred as a quarterback at WSSU but carved out a pro career as a special teams ace with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints. Nearly 25 years later, Woodbury has reunited with Vick on the inaugural Norfolk State coaching staff. He now serves as the Spartans' special teams coordinator. The two recently shared a moment of reflection in a video posted by Woodbury. At Winston-Salem State, Woodbury made a name for himself by leading the Rams to back-to-back CIAA titles in 1999 and 2000. He set several passing records during his career and entered the 2001 NFL Draft as the second-fastest quarterback behind Vick. After his playing days ended, Woodbury began coaching. He started at Delaware State as a running backs coach and later spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Johnson C. Smith. Woodbury then joined the NFL again as a scout with the Los Angeles Rams. He returned to the sidelines as an assistant special teams coach and helped the Rams win Super Bowl LVI. He transitioned back to college football in 2022 at Morgan State, then moved on to Howard University. At Howard, Woodbury led a special teams unit that blocked six field goals, ranking fifth nationally in the FCS. His journey from HBCU standout to Super Bowl champion and now Norfolk State assistant coach Michael Vick reflects a full-circle moment in HBCU football history. HBCU Swingman Classic Announces 2025 Roster
Major League Baseball and the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation have announced the 50 HBCU student-athletes selected for the third annual HBCU Swingman Classic, set for Friday, July 11, 2025, at Truist Park in Atlanta. The event, named after MLB legend Ken Griffey Jr., takes place during MLB All-Star Week and celebrates elite baseball talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Players were chosen by a selection committee featuring Griffey Jr., MLB and MLBPA officials, and scouts. The rosters were revealed live on MLB Network during the 2025 MLB Draft Combine. Former Atlanta Braves stars Brian Jordan and David Justice will manage the National League and American League squads, respectively. Under Armour Doubles Down on HBCU Sports with CIAA Extension
In a move that reinforces its commitment to innovation, performance, and cultural impact in the HBCU community, the CIAA has extended its exclusive apparel partnership with Under Armour through 2029. The announcement comes on the heels of the CIAA Board of Directors meeting, where another major deal was also finalized: keeping the storied CIAA Basketball Tournament in Baltimore through the end of the decade. For the CIAA and its member institutions, it's more than just a jersey deal. 'Under Armour continues to be a powerful partner in our journey, elevating the look, feel, and performance of our student-athletes while reinforcing our identity across the national stage,' said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker. 'We are proud to move forward together with a shared commitment to innovation and impact.' Under Armour's relationship with the CIAA began in 2018 after Russell Athletic exited the collegiate uniform space. Facilitated through BSN Sports, the deal gave CIAA programs exclusive access to UA uniforms, gear, footwear, and training equipment. It was a timely and strategic move, especially as other HBCU conferences were locking in similar partnerships. Since then, Under Armour has not just dressed athletes-they've leaned into storytelling. Their "Sisterhood in Style" campaign, launched earlier this year, spotlighted HBCU women and Black Greek life, featuring members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on the campuses of Bowie State University and Morgan State University. With imagery by Baltimore-based photographer and activist Devin Allen, the campaign tied fashion, culture, and pride together, all wrapped in UA's pink-and-green UA Echo sneaker. This brand of authenticity isn't accidental. Under Armour's headquarters are just minutes from downtown Baltimore, and its ties to the community run deep. Morgan State, a flagship HBCU in Baltimore, has long been a partner institution. The renewed CIAA deal only strengthens the city's connection to both the brand and HBCU sports and culture. So when the CIAA announced that its hoops tournament-an economic and cultural crown jewel for the conference-would stay in Baltimore through 2029, it wasn't just a win for the city. It was synergy in action. A Baltimore-based brand. A Baltimore-hosted HBCU tournament. And a renewed focus on showcasing Black excellence, both on the court and in community storytelling. Beyond the CIAA, Under Armour also outfits HBCUs like Hampton, Howard, and Edward Waters. But this extended commitment with the nation's oldest historically Black athletic conference signals something deeper-a long-term investment in legacy, innovation, and visibility. For the CIAA, the fit remains perfect-on the court, in the culture, and with the City of Baltimore.
