Saudi Arabia, Syria Explore Investment Cooperation

Saudi Arabia and Syria have explored avenues for investment cooperation in both countries, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
On Wednesday, the Saudi Minister of Investment, Khalid Al-Falih, held a virtual meeting with the Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry, Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar, to discuss avenues for joint investment cooperation and explore the promising economic opportunities in the Syrian market.
During the meeting, the two ministers discussed potential areas for public-private partnership and ways to strengthen targeted investments in the productive and service sectors, with the aim of supporting economic development and opening new channels for integration between Saudi Arabia and Syria.
On his part, Al-Falih emphasized the importance of fostering an enabling environment for expanding regional investment partnerships.
He also reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's commitment to supporting the stability and growth of Syria's economy in a way that benefits the mutual interests of both countries and promotes regional economic prosperity.
Most recently, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, headed a high-level economic delegation to Syria, where he met with the Syrian Transitional President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in Damascus.
They discussed avenues for joint cooperation aimed at supporting Syria's economy, enhancing the development of its governmental institutions, and fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people.
The discussions yielded in the announcement of a Saudi-Qatari joint financial support package for Syrian public sector employees for three months.
'This support aims to contribute to economic and social stability, improve living conditions, and reinforce development efforts in Syria,' Saudi Arabia and Qatar said in a joint statement.
In April 2025, Saudi Arabia and Qatar had committed to settling Syria's outstanding arrears to the World Bank Group, which is around $15 million, in order to support and accelerate the recovery of Syria's economy.

Suicide bombing at Damascus church kills 22

DAMASCUS — At least 22 people have been killed and 63 others wounded in a suicide bomb attack at a church in Damascus, Syria's health ministry has said. A man opened fire with a weapon at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Prophet Elias in the Dweila neighborhood during a service on Sunday evening before detonating an explosive vest, according to the interior ministry. It said the attacker was affiliated with the jihadist group Islamic State (IS). There was no immediate claim from the group itself. Photos and video from inside the church showed a heavily damaged altar, pews covered in broken glass and blood spattered across the walls. Witness Lawrence Maamari told AFP news agency that "someone entered [the church] from outside carrying a weapon" and began shooting. People "tried to stop him before he blew himself up", he added. Another man who was in a nearby shop said he heard gunfire followed by an explosion that sent glass flying. "We saw fire in the church and the remains of wooden benches thrown all the way to the entrance," Ziad said. It was the first such attack in Damascus since Islamist-led rebel forces overthrew Bashar al-Assad in December, ending 13 years of devastating civil war. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch said in a statement: "The treacherous hand of evil struck this evening, claiming our lives, along with the lives of our loved ones who fell today as martyrs during the evening divine liturgy." According to initial information, the bomb blast occurred at the entrance to the church, resulting in the deaths of people who were both inside the building and in the immediate vicinity, it added. The patriarchate called upon Syria's interim authorities to "assume full responsibility for what has happened and continues to happen in terms of violation against the sanctity of churches, and to ensure the protection of all citizens". Saudi Arabia Welcomes 116 mln Visitors in 2024

Saudi Arabia welcomed nearly 116 million domestic and inbound tourists in 2024, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom's tourism sector, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The ministry also released its 2024 Annual Statistical Report on Saudi Arabia's tourism sector to highlight key indicators of tourism activity and review the sector's growth during the year. Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb stated that the report focuses on the efforts of the ministry and all stakeholders in Saudi Arabia's tourism ecosystem. According to the report, total tourism spending for domestic and inbound travel recorded approximately SAR284 billion, marking an 11% year-over-year growth. Furthermore, the Kingdom reached its highest-ever number of inbound tourists, with almost 30 million visitors in 2024, marking an 8% rise compared to 2023. Meanwhile, inbound tourism spending in 2024 surged to SAR168.5 billion, up 19% from the previous year. The Ministry of Tourism noted that this remarkable success was mainly driven by the efforts and support of the Saudi leadership in line with the Saudi Vision 2030. As for domestic tourism, the ministry reported noticeable growth with 86.2 million domestic tourists in 2024, representing a 5% increase compared to 2023. The domestic tourism spending also reached SAR115.3 billion in 2024.
