THE proposed construction of a three-storey commercial project at Jalan SK10/4 in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, has sparked concern among the local community.
Puchong MCA chairman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong said residents found out about the project through an online advertisement.
Liew said MCA was speaking on behalf of the residents and owners of over 50 shoplots in the vicinity.
He said Selangor government had acquired the site in 1991 through the Petaling district Land Office under the Land Acquisition Act 1960, for use as an open-air carpark.
'Therefore, (publicity for) developing a new commercial project on that site is misleading, especially without any notice from Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ),' he said during a press conference at the MCA building in Seri Kembangan.
According to Liew, the party had highlighted the matter to MBSJ on May 7 and 9 but had yet to receive a reply.
Also present were Puchong MCA advisor Datuk Yap Pian Hon and Seri Kembangan MCA chairman Chin Kek Kum.
MBSJ Zone 22 councillor Tey Boon Kiat said the carpark site was privately owned and not designated for public use.
Neither had there been any application for land use conversion, he said.
'The Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) for the project has yet to be completed.
'I will wait for the TIA session to discuss the issue with residents, stakeholders and MBSJ,' Tey added. ― By ALISA IDRIS

Expansion of SST burdens people and raises prices, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: The expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will further burden the people and give businesses an excuse to raise prices, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. He said that unlike the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the SST lacks transparency, consistency, and the capacity to generate sustainable revenue. 'The government's continued expansion of SST, likely due to fiscal pressure, is a burden to the people and gives businesses an excuse to raise prices. 'MCA urges the government to take these concerns seriously and consider the constructive feedback from all sectors,' he said on Facebook on Saturday (June 21). Dr Wee said that reintroducing the GST could ensure the stability and strength of the country. He said that the GST is widely recognised for its transparency and efficiency. 'A responsible approach would be to exempt certain SMEs and vulnerable groups from the policy, rather than just postponing the rollout. 'A delay is only a short-term fix. In fact, it should be seen as a starting point for reviving the GST,' he said at the E-Invoice Seminar hosted by the MCA Political Education Committee and School of Political Studies earlier today. Dr Wee added that if GST is implemented, the e-invoice function would be included in the taxation software. 'I emphasised that while the government announced a revised timeline for e-invoice implementation on June 5, simply delaying it won't solve the root issues. MCA is of the view that the e-invoice component is a subset of the GST system,' he added. Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that reintroducing GST would unfairly burden lower-income earners. He said the implementation of GST would mean the poor, including fishermen, smallholders, low-wage earners, and street vendors, would be taxed on everyday essentials. On June 9, the Finance Ministry announced that the reviewed and expanded SST rates would come into effect next month. The measure is aimed at strengthening the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base, the ministry said.

Sabah chamber bridges cultural and economic exchange with Zhang Clan delegation

KOTA KINABALU (June 21): The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) is committed to building a bridge for economic, trade and cultural exchanges between China and Sabah. Guided by the principle of mutual cooperation and win-win development, the Chamber actively promotes the rich heritage of traditional Chinese culture. This was expressed on Friday by SCCC president Datuk Frankie Liew during an exchange session held at the SCCC conference room with a 14-member delegation from China led by President Zhang Huaxia of the Hui Gong Cultural Committee of China (Zhang Clan Association of China) and the Beijing Hui Gong Cultural Development Centre (Zhang Clan Association of Beijing). Liew stated that this meeting was more than a cultural exchange — it also symbolized the deep kinship between the two associations and celebrated the grand opening of the new Sabah Zhang Clan Association building. He praised the dedication and enthusiasm of the Zhang Clan representatives, calling the occasion a moving testament to the enduring strength of ancestral bonds. The new building is not only a milestone for Zhang clan members in Sabah, but also a powerful symbol of the thriving development of Zhang clan culture abroad. It contributes to greater unity and cohesion among Zhang clan members worldwide. He emphasized that since its founding, the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce has worked to serve as a vital platform for economic and cultural collaboration between Sabah and China. He noted that Zhang clan culture, as a brilliant gem of traditional Chinese heritage, reflects values such as solidarity, mutual support and perseverance — all of which align with the Chamber's philosophy of cooperative and mutually beneficial growth. 'This meeting is both a joyful reunion and a new beginning for deeper cooperation,' he said. 'Under the outstanding leadership of President Zhang Huaxia, we believe the grand opening of the Sabah Zhang Clan Association's new building will serve as a launchpad for broader and more in-depth collaborations — whether in cultural heritage, business, or community engagement — helping to promote Chinese traditional values while advancing prosperity on both sides.' Liew recalled that years ago, he was honored to attend a major Zhang Clan Association celebration in China at the invitation of Zhang. During that memorable occasion, they shared in the timeless brotherhood story of Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei taking the 'Peach Garden Oath' — a vow of loyalty and unity. He said this legendary tale of fraternity and righteousness remains a powerful reminder of the deep and cherished friendship between himself, Zhang, and all Zhang clan members. Liew also extended heartfelt congratulations on the successful opening of the Sabah Zhang Clan Association's new headquarters and expressed hope that, inspired by the loyalty and righteousness of Liu, Guan and Zhang, both organizations will continue to work hand-in-hand to create a new chapter of mutual success and lasting cooperation. Also present at the meeting from SCCC were Deputy President Brett Chua, Vice Presidents Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, Datuk Simon Teoh, Tan Siew Ling and Chiew HH, Director of Commerce Douglas Fong, Director of Public Relations Anthony Leong, Director of VIP Reception Chin Hui Zhi, Deputy Director of VIP Reception Cheong SL and Committee Members Lucas Kwan, Chan JG, Penny Lee, Desmond Hsiu, Wong CM and Joanis Yeo. The China Zhang clan delegates were Zhang Huaxia, Jiang Li, Zhang Jundong, Zhang Ziyan, Zhang Yuelin, Zhang Ziliang, Zhang Qilun, Zhang Chunfeng, Liu Zhiwen, Zhang Zhijie, Yang Zhihua, Liu Zhenmin, Xie Yinhui and Zhang Tao.

For tourism growth, the Minister, who was the guest of honour, also proposed reciprocal visits among the 10 member countries, saying ASEAN tourism must seize new opportunities and create new adventures. Speaking to the delegates, Liew said: 'If it's your first time in Sabah, I encourage you to explore beyond the venue.
