Microsoft launches AI National Skills Initiative to empower 100,000 government employees to drive AI innovation across the UAE
The initiative, launched at GITEX Global 2024, will deliver personalized learning experiences to civil servants, empowering them to unlock the full potential of the latest advancements in AI to drive AI transformation and reinforce the UAE's position as a global hub of innovation.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Microsoft, in partnership with local UAE government entities, today announced the launch of the AI National Skills Initiative, a comprehensive AI training program aimed at upskilling 100,000 government employees across local government institutions in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. The 12-month program, unveiled on the opening day of GITEX Global 2024, will help accelerate the UAE's journey towards becoming a global leader and hub of AI innovation and technological excellence.
The AI National Skills Initiative will provide role-specific training tailored to organizational leaders, developers, and frontline workers within various government departments across the three emirates. The program's content is designed to address AI knowledge gaps, drive AI fluency, and equip government employees with the skills needed to effectively harness the power of AI to accelerate digital transformation and enhance the quality of public services. By leveraging Microsoft-powered AI technology, the initiative will deliver personalized learning experiences that will empower employees to seamlessly integrate the latest developments in AI into their roles, fostering a culture of innovation across the UAE Government.
The launch of the program underscores Microsoft's commitment to making AI opportunities accessible to everyone and the company's contribution to supporting the UAE's National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. The announcement of the AI National Skills Initiative follows shortly after the launch of Microsoft's AI Skills Navigator, a comprehensive platform designed to provide learners with personalized AI education. The online platform offers an AI-powered assistant to guide users to the most suitable learning paths based on their goals, roles, and skill levels. It aggregates content from various sources such as Microsoft Learn, LinkedIn Learning, GitHub, and more, providing access to over 200 free learning resources in one place. The platform includes assessment tools to help identify skill gaps, showcases inspiring success stories of the impact that AI learning has had on individuals around the world, and is localized for 21 markets to help advance global AI literacy. The launch of the platform will play a pivotal role in accelerating Microsoft's efforts to equip people across all sectors with future-ready AI skills, driving innovation, and fostering economic growth worldwide.
Microsoft is participating at this year's edition of GITEX Global alongside 36 of its partners. As part of its mission to demonstrate how AI can help contribute to the health, happiness, and wellbeing of local communities across the UAE, the company is showcasing an innovative Generative AI application, called 'Sawa', that users can utilize to learn more about the UAE, access essential government services, better manage their health, and even help in the upkeep of public infrastructure across parks and local neighborhoods. For instance, residents can snap a picture of a damaged bench or handrail and report it using Sawa. Doing so will increase the resident's Happiness Score on the app, and help foster a sense of belonging and responsibility among residents, contributing to the nation's Happiness Index and reinforcing the country's position as a preferred destination to live and work.
Microsoft's stand at GITEX Global is located in Hall 7 and features a Demo Arena where visitors can learn more about the Sawa application. The stand also features an Xbox Gaming stage, a DJ Booth, Surface Zone, Tech Talk arena, F&B stand, dedicated networking area, and VIP meeting room.

Deezer Adds AI Song Tags to Tackle Streaming Fraud
Yara Sameh Deezer announced Friday that it will begin labeling albums that include AI-generated tracks in combat against streaming fraud. The music streaming service reports that about 18% of the music uploaded each day — more than 20,000 tracks — is now fully AI-generated. While most of these tracks don't go viral, Deezer says around 70% of its streams are fake and designed to earn royalties fraudulently. To combat this, AI-generated tracks on Deezer are now clearly tagged and won't appear in editorial playlists or algorithm-based recommendations. Fraudulent streams are also being filtered out of royalty payments. The company says the new labels will be a game changer in helping listeners determine the difference between human-created music and AI content. Deezer notes that for now, AI-only songs make up just 0.5% of all streams on its platform, but that the trend is growing fast. 'We've detected a significant uptick in delivery of AI-generated music only in the past few months and we see no sign of it slowing down. It's an industry-wide issue, and we are committed to leading the way in increasing transparency by helping music fans identify which albums include AI music,' Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said in a press release . 'AI is not inherently good or bad, but we believe a responsible and transparent approach is key to building trust with our users and the music industry,' he added. 'We are also clear in our commitment to safeguarding the rights of artists and songwriters at a time where copyright law is being put into question in favor of training AI models.' Deezer applied for two patents in December 2024 for its AI Detection technology, which it says is focused on two different ways of detecting 'unique signatures' that tell the difference between synthetic and authentic content. The move comes as Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment are reportedly in talks to license their work to AI startups Udio and Suno, Bloomberg reported earlier this month. Israeli army says attacked dozens of military targets in Iran
Basant Ahmed The Israeli military said it launched airstrikes against dozens of military targets in Iran overnight Thursday. The targets included a nuclear weapons research and development project headquarters and several missile production sites in the Iranian capital, Tehran, according to an Israeli military statement. Iran launched a new batch of missiles Friday morning at several sites in southern Israel, specifically in Beersheba and the Negev. Amazon says it will reduce its workforce as AI replaces human employees
Amazon is warning its employees that artificial intelligence will help the company have a smaller workforce in the future. In a blog post Tuesday that was sent out earlier to employees, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that efficiency gains from AI would allow the company to eventually have a reduced human workforce. 'As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,' he wrote. 'It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,' he continued. Al won't just effect change at Amazon, Jassy said. AI 'will change how we all work and live,' including 'billions' of AI agents 'across every company and in every imaginable field.'However, much of this remains speculative. 'Many of these agents have yet to be built, but make no mistake, they're coming, and coming fast,' Jassy said. He urged employees to view AI as 'teammates we can call on at various stages of our work, and that will get wiser and more helpful with more experience.' Jassy's message follows increased warnings within the tech industry over AI's effect on white collar jobs. In May, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned on CNN that the technology will spike unemployment sooner than unprepared political leaders and businesses expect. AI, including tools Anthropic itself is building, could eliminate half of entry-level, white-collar jobs and boost unemployment to as much as 20% in the next one to five years, he told Axios. Critics say these warnings aren't based off much research or evidence and are coming from the people who are poised to profit the most from AI adoption. Daniel Zhao, lead economist and senior manager on Glassdoor's economic research team, fully expects that AI will have a significant impact on the economy and how people work. But how much of an effect it's having on hiring and jobs currently is hard to tease out, he said. 'The economy and the job market have slowed, and it makes it difficult to disentangle how much of that is being driven by AI,' he said, adding that the recent slowdown in hiring activity is likely driven by economic uncertainty CNN's Alicia Wallace contributed to this report.
