Ramazan bazaar plans hit roadblock
The district administration's negotiations with the traders and the Grocery Merchants Association regarding setting up affordable Ramazan bazaars have 'failed', with the latter refusing to set up special stalls for selling sugar at government rates.
According to the association, the district administration and district market committees should set up affordable Ramazan bazaars and sugar mills to sell sugar at the stalls. Following the failure of these negotiations, the government has decided that larger cities, where model bazaars have been established, will now host Ramazan bazaars, while smaller cities without model bazaars will set up facilitation bazaars.
However, with only six days remaining until the start of Ramazan, no preparations have been made so far.
Rizwan Shaukat, the general secretary of the Central Grocery Merchants Association and Suleman Pervez Butt, its patron, are of the view that setting up affordable Ramazan bazaars is not the responsibility of the traders as it's the duty of the district market committee. Sugar mills and sugar dealers should sell 'subsidised' sugar at [government] stalls, he says and adds traders will focus on their own business during Ramazan.
On the other hand, the government has instructed that in model and facilitation bazaars, all stalls will be allocated to wholesale dealers who will sell grocery items and Sehri items at wholesale rates. Negotiations are currently underway between the district administration and wholesale dealers, and their reactions have been mixed.
Due to the district administration's poor policies, there will be no subsidised Sehri items available for the public this year. The administration has only decided to increase the number of price magistrates. All tehsildars, deputy tehsildars, revenue officers, and senior patwaris will be given the temporary title of price control magistrates for 30 days, effective from the 1st to the 30th of Ramazan.
In Rawalpindi, where Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday bazaars are typically held, daily bazaars will now be allowed from the 1st to the 29th of Ramazan. These bazaars will be set up at Committee Chowk, Allama Iqbal Park Area, Haidri Chowk, Dhoke Hassu, Naya Katariyan, Gulzar Quaid, Morgah, Adiala Road, Chakri Road, Chungi 22, and Chohar Chowk.

Sugar, rice prices soar in wholesale markets
With the upcoming fiscal year's budget implementation looming, wholesale markets have begun raising prices. The price of a 50kg sugar sack rose by Rs300 on Wednesday, and an additional Rs200 increase is expected this week, pushing the retail price of sugar up by Rs10 to Rs190 per kg. The price of tea leaves reached Rs2,200 per kg, while lentils and rice saw per-bag increases of Rs350 and Rs400, respectively. Wholesale traders have warned that new prices for all grocery items will be issued within the next ten days due to newly imposed taxes. They have also reduced the supply of sugar, rice, and lentils by 30 to 40 per cent, causing shortages in stores across the city. Grocery Merchants Association President Salim Pervez Butt stated that prices of essential items like pulses, sugar, ghee, and rice are rising by Rs100 to Rs200 per bag daily. Despite payments and orders, wholesalers are failing to meet demand. Rising fuel prices have also made transportation more expensive. He criticised authorities for targeting small retailers while ignoring large-scale price hikes by wholesalers. He questioned the early increase in prices, given that new taxes are set to take effect on July 1. Fears are mounting that milkmen, butchers, and bakers will also raise prices of milk, yoghurt, meat, and bread in July due to these tax measures.

Traders announce halting sugar sales over govt failure
The Karyana Merchant Association Punjab has strongly condemned the continued and devastating rise in sugar prices, attributing the crisis to the government's complete failure to intervene. In response, the association has announced a province-wide halt in sugar sales at all grocery stores and has appealed to the public across the country to boycott sugar and instead use alternatives such as jaggery (gur) and unrefined sugar (shakkar). The association described the control of sugar prices as "extremely difficult," noting that in the open market, sugar prices have surged to Rs190 per kg in urban areas and up to Rs200 per kg in suburban and rural regions. According to Sheikh Rizwan Shaukat, the central general secretary of the Karyana Merchant Association, and Saleem Pervaiz Butt, the president of the Rawalpindi Division, both the federal and Punjab governments have proven utterly powerless and ineffective in curbing sugar prices. Wholesale sugar prices are increasing daily by Rs100 to Rs300 per bag. They alleged that a powerful sugar mafia is exploiting the nation while small grocery shop owners are being unfairly targeted through fines and legal action. They further criticised the inconsistent sugar policies — allowing export at one time and import at another — as mechanisms for profiteering. Despite repeated meetings with senior officials and ministers over the past two months to alert them to the exploitation occurring in the name of sugar, the authorities have failed to take any effective action. Now, the association says, they are left with no other option but to halt sugar sales altogether to avoid heavy fines, penalties, and arrests.

Nawaz leaves for London on special plane
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday left for London on a special plane. According to family sources, the PML-N president will celebrate Eidul Azha with his sons in the United Kingdom during the two-week visit and will also get his medical examination conducted during the stay. Nawaz is visiting London after seven months. The former PM was scheduled to spend his Ramazan in Saudi Arabia but had cancelled the trip on his doctors' advice. The PML-N chief remained in London from October 2019 to October 2023 in what could be described as a self-imposed exile. Upon his return to the country after formation of a PML-N led coalition government Nawaz was acquitted of the charges of corruption.
