Why Will Smith said no to Inception, one of Christopher Nolan's biggest films

India Today4 days ago

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan's sci-fi blockbuster 'Inception' became one of his most acclaimed films, with Leonardo DiCaprio delivering a memorable performance as Dom Cobb. But before DiCaprio took the role, the part was offered to 'The Pursuit of Happyness' actor Will Smith, who turned it down.Nolan first approached Smith for the role of Cobb in the film, but the actor declined, stating that he didn't understand the film.advertisementIn a conversation with UK radio station, KISS, Oscar-winning actor Will Smith revealed that acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, known for 'Oppenheimer', 'The Dark Knight', and 'Interstellar,' originally approached him to star in 'Inception'. The film ultimately went on to become a blockbuster in 2010 with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead.
When asked by the host if the actor turned down 'Matrix', Smith laughed and said, "That was one of my beautiful scars."'I don't think I've ever said it publicly, but I am going to say it because we are opening up to one another. Chris Nolan brought me 'Inception' first and I didn't get it. I've never said that out loud. Now that I think about it, it's those movies that go into those alternate realities they don't pitch well. But I am hurt by those, too,' he added.advertisementAccording to reports, Nolan also offered the script to Brad Pitt and "requested a response within 48 hours". When the 'Seven' star didn't commit, Nolan moved on to Will Smith. After Smith's rejection, the director moved on to 'Titanic' star Leonardo DiCaprio, which ended up as one of his biggest hit movies.During the radio interview, Smith admitted that he regrets passing on the films, which have become iconic, saying, 'It hurts too bad to talk about.'Back in 2019, Smith shared a YouTube video explaining why he turned down the lead role of Neo in 'The Matrix'. He admitted that he wasn't able to connect to the Wachowski siblings' pitch. The actor also turned down Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'. The film was initially offered to him before ultimately going to Jamie Foxx, known for his roles in 'Baby Driver' and 'The Amazing Spider-man 2'.When asked why he turned down Tarantino's film, Smith told GQ magazine that he 'didn't want to make a slavery film about vengeance,' so he turned the filmmaker down. Will Smith has several upcoming movies, including 'I Am Legend 2' and 'After Earth 2', both slated for release in 2025. There are also rumours and concept trailers circulating about a potential 'Black Panther 3' and 'Alien VS Predator 3' featuring Smith.Must Watch

US Singer Chris Brown Pleads Not Guilty In UK Assault Case

American R&B singer Chris Brown on Friday pleaded not guilty in a UK court to a charge stemming from an alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a dark suit and tie as well as glasses, stood in the dock in London as the charge was put to him, replying: "Not guilty, ma'am." The singer, who is on £5 million ($6.7 million) bail, waved to people in the public gallery as he left, following his plea to allegedly attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. A five-to-seven-day-long trial was scheduled to start on October 26, 2026. The singer was held in custody for nearly a week in May after he was arrested in the northwestern city of Manchester. He was later released on bail. Under the terms of his bail, he will forfeit the £5 million guarantee if he fails to return for court proceedings. He was also given the go-ahead to continue his scheduled international tour which began on June 8 in Amsterdam. The star, who had a troubled relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna, is on the UK leg of his tour, with his next date in London on Saturday. Brown is charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an assault in which the victim was allegedly struck several times with a bottle before being pursued, punched and kicked. The alleged incident took place at a nightclub in Hanover Square in London on February 19, 2023 while Brown was touring in the UK. Grammy winner Police detained him in the early hours of May 13 at a five-star hotel in Manchester after he reportedly flew in by private jet. Other bail terms include that he should surrender his passport if he is not travelling. He is also required to live at a specific address known to the court and is not permitted to visit the nightclub where the alleged assault took place or contact the alleged victim, Abraham Diah. He appeared in the dock with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a US national, with whom he is jointly charged. Akinlolu also entered a not guilty plea to the same charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Both men are also jointly charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. They will enter pleas to that charge on July 11, the court was told. Brown also faces a third charge of having an offensive weapon, a bottle, in public. The Grammy-winning singer is known for mid-2000s hits such as "Kiss, Kiss". He rose from a local church choir in Virginia to sudden fame with his rich R&B voice and later rap, but his reputation has been tarnished by the allegations of abuse. He is also scheduled to perform in France, Portugal and the US later in the year, before the tour wraps up in Memphis in mid-October.

Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna's Kuberaa Movie Review: Engaging, engrossing and entertaining

Steller performances by Dhanush who plays the role of a beggar will steal your heart. Also starring Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, Jim Sarbh and Dalip Tahil, this movie is an absolute masterpiece. read more Star cast: Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, Jim Sarbh and Dalip Tahil Director: Sekhar Kammula If a film deserves true appreciation this week, it is Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna's Kuberaa film. Not just because of the fantastic star cast and performances, but because of an extremely immersive and engaging story. Kuberaa was a delightful surprise especially when you have another superstar movie releasing on the same day. I went to watch this film with absolutely zero expectation, but came back with my heart full, especially on a day when you have to watch and write two movies simultaneously. I was totally exhausted or that would be an understatement. I was totally drained out. But I came back rejuvenated. Such an intense, engrossing topic which we hardly see filmmakers touching upon — the painful life of the beggars will keep you glued to the screen. And why not, when National Award-winning actor Dhanush and acclaimed filmmaker Sekhar Kammula make a movie, you are bound to get a masterpiece. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD We all talk about the rich beggars on the streets and begging is an easy source of income, but have we ever thought that this isn't the life that they have chosen, rather they have been forced into this painful life. Otherwise why would anybody choose a life where there is absolutely no dignity. The effortlessly brilliant performance of Dhanush who plays the role of a beggar, Deva will break your heart. All they want in life to survive is some food. We need to admit that Dhanush is the central character or rather the soul of Kuberaa and it's not Nagarjuna or Rashmika Mandanna. His simplicity, his dialogue delivery, his expressions and his movements -the way he sits, eats or even talks will break your heart. There is an honesty in his performance that makes Dhanush such a master craftsman. He is the good man in the movie and the central character. By watching his performance that has so much depth and those eyes full of illusion, I am sure you will not be able to stop your tears. On the other hand, Nagarjuna's character as Deepak is layered. He is an honest CBI officer who had been jailed for no fault of his. He is set free by an equally dishonest businessman, Neeraj Mitra (Jim Sarbh). He is dishonest, cunning, ruthless, power crazy and dangerous. Jim Sarbh gets into the role of Neeraj Mitra, a business tycoon with ease, a man you surely can't stop hating. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD There is never a slow moment in the film, Rashmika Mandanna adds her usual simple charm to an equally serious story. The only negative point of the film I felt was the second half was stretched beyond its requirement. Rating: 4 (out of 5 stars) Kuberaa is playing in cinemas WATCH the trailer of Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna's Kuberaa here:

Singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty in London nightclub assault case

LONDON — Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge related to the serious beating of a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and black-rimmed glasses, was arraigned in London's Southwark Crown Court on one count of attempting to unlawfully and maliciously cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Brown's friend and fellow musician Omololu Akinlolu, 39, who performs under the name 'Hoody Baby,' pleaded not guilty to the same charge. Prosecutors previously said Brown and Akinlolu assaulted producer Abe Diaw at a bar in the Tape nightclub in the swanky Mayfair neighborhood in February 2023. Brown allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on Diaw and hit him several times with a bottle and then punched and kicked him. The attack was caught on surveillance camera in front of a club full of people, prosecutors said. Brown was originally charged with a single count of grievous bodily harm after his arrest in May, but prosecutors subsequently brought an indictment adding two counts: assault causing actual bodily harm and having an offensive weapon, a bottle. When a court clerk asked Brown how he pleaded to the grievous bodily harm count, he replied: 'Not guilty ma'am." Brown did not enter pleas on the additional counts and was ordered to return to court July 11 to face those charges after wrapping up the European leg of his world tour. His trial was scheduled for Oct. 26 2026. The singer of 'Go Crazy,' 'Run It,' and 'Kiss Kiss' was released last month on a 5 million-pound bail, which allowed him to start his 'Breezy Bowl XX' tour earlier this month. Following his release after almost a week in jail, Brown posted on Instagram: 'FROM THE CAGE TO THE STAGE!!! BREEZYBOWL." Brown, who quickly rose to stardom as a teen in 2005, won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for 'F.A.M.E.' and then earned his second in the same category for '11:11 ' earlier this year. He is currently touring the U.K., playing this weekend in London with subsequent shows in Ireland, Scotland, France and Portugal. He returns to North America at the end of July to play Miami, before moving across the U.S. with a two-night stop in Toronto along the way.
