New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) The celebration of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Saturday witnessed an overwhelming global participation, from India's borders and remote villages to bustling cities and embassies abroad. The day was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who performed yoga at the iconic Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, addressing a massive gathering of over one lakh yoga enthusiasts. Modi highlighted that yoga is not merely an exercise but a holistic way of life, transcending boundaries, backgrounds, age, and abilities. He further emphasised the unifying power of yoga, noting that it has now been embraced by 175 countries, marking the global acceptance of his proposal for IDY in 2015. Joining the Prime Minister at the venue were Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Konidela Pawan Kalyan, underlining the yoga's cultural significance. To mark the day, President Droupadi Murmu took part in a yoga camp held at the Police Line in Dehradun, highlighting India's pivotal role in promoting yoga on the world stage. In fact, throughout the country, the spirit of unity was palpable as ministers, government officials, organisations both from public and private sectors and people from all walks of life participated. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led celebrations at Parliament, while Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took part in a session with 2,500 soldiers in Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir. He praised yoga for its role in enhancing mental clarity, discipline, and control — critical qualities for the armed forces. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel celebrated the day respectively at Prahladnagar Garden in Ahmedabad city and Vadnagar town of Mehsana district, the birthplace of the Prime Minister, while at Kartavya Path in the national capital, Union Health Minister and BJP president JP Nadda led the mass yoga demonstration, emphasising yoga's global significance in ensuring balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Nadda's colleagues in the Ministry, Prataprao Jadhav and Anupriya Singh Patel, called yoga as an invaluable gift from India that connects the body, mind, and soul for holistic well-being. In states like Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, and Madhya Pradesh, officials and citizens embraced yoga with a deep sense of belonging and peace. J&K LG Manoj Sinha participated in the 11th International Yoga Day in line with the Common Yoga Protocol, while Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang led a session in Gangtok, promoting wellness in the northeastern region. Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, attended the event at Modhera Sun Temple, Mehsana while senior officials at the Geological Survey of India (GSI) preferred to choose its iconic geo-heritage sites such as Bhimbetka Rock Shelters in Madhya Pradesh and Mangampeta Barytes Deposit in Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, celebrated the day near the riverfront at Maa Samaleswari Temple Complex, Sambalpur, Odisha with officials, dignitaries and residents of Sambalpur joining him at the session. Similarly, over nine lakh cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) participated in synchronised yoga sessions at iconic locations across the country from Leh in the North to Kanyakumari in the South and from Dwarka in the West to Tezu in the East at iconic spots, as well as in public parks, schools, and colleges across the country, according to the government statement. The enthusiasm wasn't limited to India. Indian embassies worldwide hosted grand events, from Tokyo, where Yoshiko Ishiba, the spouse of Japan's Prime Minister, joined in, to New York's Times Square, where hundreds took part in a vibrant yoga session. Washington, DC also marked the occasion with a large turnout at the Lincoln Memorial, demonstrating yoga's universal appeal. Visakhapatnam sets world record on International Yoga Day: 3.02 lakh people perform yoga along 28km beach stretch; PM Narendra Modi leads historic event
VISAKHAPATNAM: The coastal city made history by setting a world record with a massive participation of 302,000 people performing yoga along the beach stretch, in the presence of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on International Yoga Day, Saturday. The port city aimed for a turnout of 326,000 to establish a new Guinness World Record for the largest yoga gathering in one place, exceeding the previous record in Surat, Gujarat, by 147,000 participants. Notably, 22,122 tribal students from Alluri Sitarama Raju district had previously set a record for the largest synchronized performance of Suryanamaskar at a single location. The gathering on the beach stretch spanned about 28 kilometers from Kalimata Temple to Bheemili and began even before sunrise. Fortunately, the weather was kind, with not a single drop of rain falling in the morning. People of all ages participated, supported by a QR code tracking system that recorded 302,087 attendees. Meanwhile, Indian Navy personnel performed yoga on the decks of warships along the coast. All 326 designated areas were filled with enthusiastic participants who began arriving early in the morning. Over 10,000 vehicles transported people from various locations. Despite some traffic congestion at various junctions, the event proceeded peacefully and successfully, supported by more than 10,000 security personnel and an additional 6,000 government staff from various departments who worked diligently for the past month. While the state government anticipated a turnout of 20 million participants statewide, registrations reached 24.5 million. In total, 217 million people participated in various locations across Andhra Pradesh. Initially, the government planned to issue 2.5 million certificates to participants who underwent three days to one week of training. However, they later revised this estimate to identify 18 million eligible individuals for certificates. All 26 districts in the state organized different theme-based yoga events, and around 101 tourist destinations celebrated Yoga Day.

English No Longer Colonial Relic But A Global Tool For Progress: Tamil Nadu Minister
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his recent remarks on the English language, calling it a veiled attempt to deny access to knowledge and empowerment for the underprivileged. In a sharp response posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Poyyamozhi wrote, "English is no longer a colonial relic - it's a global tool of progress. Nations like China, Japan, Korea, Israel and Germany teach it not as some colonial hangover, but to lead in science, tech, and trade." Taking aim at the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS, he added, "Here in India, Amit Shah and the RSS want to paint English as elitist - not because it harms our culture, but because it empowers the poor, Dalits, and backward communities to rise. Like Sanskrit once was, they now want English kept out of reach for the masses. This isn't about language - it's about control." The DMK leader asserted that Tamil Nadu believes in equal access, offering Tamil for identity and English for opportunity - a dual-language approach that he said lifts all children rather than leaving many behind. His statement came in the wake of controversial comments by Amit Shah at a book launch, where the Union Minister said, "In our lifetime, we will see a society in which those speaking English will feel ashamed, that day is not far". He further claimed that Indian culture and identity cannot be understood through "foreign languages". Mr Shah's comments have reignited the ongoing language row between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the BJP at the Centre. The DMK has consistently opposed the three-language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP), terming it a "backdoor attempt" to impose Hindi and marginalise non-Hindi speakers in the country's diverse linguistic landscape. While the BJP maintains that the policy only promotes learning additional Indian languages and strengthens the mother tongue, the DMK counters that in practice, only Hindi gets prioritised - particularly pointing to the Kendriya Vidyalayas in Tamil Nadu, where Tamil teachers are often not appointed 'citing' low enrolment, leading to growing fears of linguistic exclusion.
