Plantation drive, awareness rallies mark World Environment Day in Visakhapatnam

Planting of saplings, rallies, awareness meetings and calls to shun the use of plastic marked the World Environment Day in the city on Thursday.
District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad flagged off a 'green rally', taken out from the Kali Matha temple to the AU Convention Centre on Beach Road. The programme was organised under the aegis of the Forest Department, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, GVMC and other departments.
The Collector said that a campaign was launched to plant 5 lakh saplings across the district. The target was to plant over a million saplings in the district. He called upon the organisers to ensure protection and growth of the plants.
The Collector called upon the public to shun the use of plastic. He reminded that 'single-use plastic' has already been banned. Plastic is causing untold harm to public health, including cancer. It is also harming marine life, he said and commended Divis Labs, Coromandel and other industries and NGOs for becoming a part of the sapling promotion.
Waltair Railway Division celebrated the day with enthusiasm and commitment, emphasising its dedication to environmental protection and sustainability.
This year's theme, 'Beat Plastic Pollution,' highlights the need to end plastic pollution, and the division has actively focused on raising public awareness on plastic ban and promoting large-scale plantation drives.
It organised a series of activities from May 22 to June 5. These initiatives were aimed at reducing plastic pollution and enhancing green cover across the division.
Railway employees across the division pledged to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives. Thousands of saplings of various species were planted at multiple locations, including railway colonies and community spaces.
The Dolphin Nose Railway Colony witnessed active participation of ADRM (Operations) Manoj Kumar Sahoo, ADRM (Infra) E. Santharam, and other branch officers.
Further, ECoRWWO organised community plantation programmes to preserve biodiversity and enhance green cover. ECoR WWO president Jyotsna Bohra, along with vice-president Madhusmita Sahoo, Secretary Ankita Sharma, and other executive members, graced the event at Anurag Montessori School.
Cleanliness campaigns were held at key stations and colonies including Duvvada, Vizianagaram, Simhachalam, Srikakulam Road, Koraput, Rayagada, Jagdalpur, and Kirandul, emphasising the importance of waste management and plastic reduction.
Chief Medical Officer D. Sarath Babu, along with his team, participated in mass plantation drives, reinforcing the link between a healthy environment and public health.
A 'Swachh Bharat' drive was organised to commemorate the World Environment Day, at Duvvada Railway Station on Thursday.
A total of 28 persons, representing various associations, participated in the clean and green initiative, organised by K. Eswar, Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) Member and MSN Murthy, secretary, Manavavikas Vedika.
The announcements on eco-awareness, made on the public address system by Durga Laxmi, MS Rao Duvvada Railway staff, drew the attention of passengers boarding and alighting trains at the station.
The clean and green programme was followed by free distribution of RO water bottles to around 450 passengers travelling in general compartments of Shirdi Express and Prasanthi Express by Kameswara Rao and Bhaskar.

Farmers call for coordinated action by Central and State governments for mitigation of human-wildlife conflict

Conveying their concern over the persistence of wildlife-human conflict, farmers' associations in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts have urged the Central and State governments to get their acts together to mitigate the problem. While the Union government must launch a centralised helpline, the State government has to equip the forest personnel with walkie-talkies and other paraphernalia to address the issue, the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Protection Association has emphasised. Citing the recurring instances of human deaths due to attack by elephants in recent months, Eesan Murugasamy, Founder, Tamil Nadu Farmers' Protection Association, said the victims mainly constitute farmers and agricultural workers. The helpline will enable farmers to alert the Forest Department about presence of wild animals outside forest boundaries without loss of time, paving way for prompt action before damage is caused to humans and agricultural crops, Mr. Murugasamy said. Likewise, forest personnel at the field level must be equipped with wireless walkie-talkies for ease of communication with superior officers while patrolling in the forest areas. Farmers in Udumalpet in Tiruppur district and Mettupalayam-Karamadai belt of Coimbatore district who have been facing substantial losses due to damages caused to agricultural and horticultural crops by wild animals called for a decisive categorisation of wild pigs that venture out of the forest areas and destroy crops, and herds that move deep into human habitation and stays put in thickets, in management of human-wildlife conflict. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, it is learnt, has initiated action for establishment of a Centre of Excellence for human-wildlife conflict management, to find amicable solutions through advanced technologies, including AI, for management of human-wildlife conflicts. Based on interactions with the stakeholders, the ministry has decided to develop appropriate strategies for plausible actions to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. An advisory to deal with human wildlife conflict issued by the ministry during 2021 recommends coordinated interdepartmental action, identification of conflict hotspots, adherence to standard operating procedures, establishment of rapid response teams, formation of State and district level committees to review the quantum of ex-gratia relief, issuing guidance and instructions for expedited payments, and provision of adequate funds for ex-gratia relief to be paid to the affected persons in the case of death and injury. Species-specific guidelines were issued during 2023 for mitigation of conflicts arising from various wild animals: elephant, gaur, leopard, snake, crocodile, Rhesus Macaque, wild pig, bear, blue bull and blackbuck.

Allahabad University scholar Neha Rubab wins Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar for Urdu novel

Neha Rubab, a research scholar in the Urdu department at Allahabad University (AU) and a resident of the Kareli locality, has been selected for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2025, announced on Wednesday. This year, 23 young writers from across the country have been chosen for their outstanding contributions in various languages. Neha received the honour for her Urdu-language novel Mazharul Haq: Tareeq-e-Azadi-e-Hind Ka Faramosh Karda Qaid. The award includes a cash prize of ₹50,000, according to AU PRO Prof Jaya Kapoor. Neha had completed her doctoral research under the guidance of former head of Urdu department of AU Prof Shabnam Hamid and submitted her thesis a month ago. On January 26, she was honoured with the Best Research Scholar Award started this year at AU by vice chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava. In 2022, Neha had also received the PM Yuva Lekhak Samman—an honour for which just 75 youths were selected from all over the country. This honour was given to Neha Rubab by President Draupadi Murmu during a programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She is currently working as a research assistant at the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, New Delhi. Expressing happiness on being selected for the Yuva Puraskar, Neha said, 'This is a great honour for me. I worked hard continuously and this award will inspire me to move further in life and do better work.' The Urdu novel that has earned Neha Rubab her latest award focuses on the untouched aspects of the life of Maulana Mazharul Haq, who was an associate of Mahatma Gandhi.

Over 8.5 lakh registered for Mega Yogandhra

Rajamahendravaram: As part of the 'Yogandhra' programme, the main district-level event will be held near the Arts College on the Grand Trunk Road here on Friday, announced district collector P Prasanthi. She said that yoga sessions will be conducted at 14 different locations across the city under the supervision of various government departments. The Forest Department has made special arrangements for the Yogandhra programme in a large scale at Nagaravanam, located in the Diwancheruvu area. Highlighting the scale of participation, the collector informed that over 8.51 lakh people are expected to take part in the Yogandhra programme across more than 5,500 locations in the district. District officials urged people to actively take part in the programme and make yoga a part of their daily routine for a healthier lifestyle. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, in a video conference held on Thursday, reviewed the progress of the ongoing 'Yogandhra' campaign with district collectors across the state. He emphasised that the month-long programme has now entered its final phase and stressed the need for effective coordination during the last two days to ensure maximum participation and impact. During the interaction, Collector Prasanthi informed the Chief Minister that the district had set a target of enrolling 7,71,000 participants, but exceeded expectations with 8,61,979 people registering for the programme.
