"Operation Honeymoon" Spreads Beyond Meghalaya Border, Focus On Guwahati

The operation -- code named Operation Honeymoon -- to unearth the missing links of the horrific "Honeymoon murder" continues with the Meghalaya police likely to raid more areas outside the state where the digital footprints of the accused are to be found. Sources in the Special Investigation Team said the idea is to find missing links in this case.
Today, Meghalaya police with help of colleagues in Assam, raided a lodge in Pan Bazar locality of Guwahati, where the three alleged contract killers had stayed for a night while on their way to Shillong to kill Raja Raghuvanshi.
According to Guwahati police sources, the three suspects had arrived at Ananda Lodge of Pan Bazar around 8.30 pm on May 19. The Meghalaya police searched the room they stayed in and recorded the statements of the lodge manager and staff who claimed the behaviour of the three was like any other boarders and they did not find anything suspicious.
The men had supplied their Aadhar card as identity record at the lodge, police sources added.
The men claimed they were students from Indore and were visiting Assam and other parts of northeast. They checked out early on next day - around 5:30 am, sources said.
Meghalaya SIT feels that on May 20, the men had tailed the couple at Guwahati's Kamakhya Temple.
The SIT had also found out that the men had bought the murder weapon- a new machete - from a flea market in Guwahati, like Fancy Bazar or Paltan Bazar area, not far from the lodge they stayed.
Guwahati police sources added that the Meghalaya SIT is also analyzing CCTV footage of certain areas of the city where they found digital footprints of the accused. Search is on for the vendor from whom the machete was purchased.

However, CCTV footage obtained by the SIT appears to show him removing a bag from the flat in his car on 10 June. He is also seen installing security cameras at the building shortly after, which police believe may have been an attempt to obscure his actions. According to police, the flat was initially rented by James for Rs 17,000 per month on behalf of Vishal, an associate of the victim. Sonam later moved into the flat after returning to Indore. After several arrests were made in the city, Sonam is believed to have travelled to Ghazipur on 8 June, leaving the bag behind. Two days later, James allegedly used a duplicate key to enter the flat and take away bags, clothes, food items and other belongings.

SIT to file AP liquor scam chargesheet in Vijayawda ACB court

VIJAYAWADA: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged multi-crore liquor scam during the previous YSRCP regime, is set to file a preliminary chargesheet in the ACB Court in Vijayawada within the next one or two weeks. According to sources, the investigation has reached a crucial stage, with SIT gathering substantial evidence, and testimonies pointing to large-scale irregularities and fund misappropriation in the liquor policy implemented during 2019-24. The case began with a complaint lodged by Yeedi Srinivas to the Principal Secretary (Revenue-Excise). It was initially taken up by the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (APCID), which registered an FIR in September last year. The State government later constituted SIT, headed by NTR District Commissioner of Police SV Rajashekhar Babu to probe the case. Investigators reportedly uncovered a kickback network involving nearly Rs 3,500 crore siphoned off over five years. Several key individuals have been arrested so far, including Raj Kesireddy (alias Kesireddy Rajashekar Reddy), former Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, Cherukuru Venkatesh Naidu, K Dhanunjay Reddy, P Krishnamohan Reddy, Sajjala Sridhar Reddy, Balaji Govindappa, Dilip Kumar, and Chanakya. All are currently in judicial custody. The first arrest in the case took place in April. As per legal provisions, a chargesheet should be filed within 90 days of any arrest to avoid granting default bail. Hence, SIT has speeded up the process of filing the chargesheet. 'We are in the final stage of the investigation. The preliminary chargesheet will help us seek court approval to seize the passports of the accused, and take steps to prevent their escape,' a senior official told TNIE.

Minister writes to CM on apathy over illegal mining cases

Bengaluru/Raichur: Law Minister H K Patil on Saturday said he had written a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressing concerns over administration apathy towards taking illegal mining cases in the state to a logical end. He also wanted the culprits to be punished, and the lost wealth recovered. The senior minister, who is also in-charge of Parliamentary Affairs, has written a seven-page letter dated June 18, pointing out that only 7.6 per cent of all the cases related to illegal mining that allegedly took place between 2007 and 2011 leading to the loss of an estimated Rs 1.5 lakh crore to the government, have been investigated so far. In the letter he noted that there is outrage among people that the government has not shown honesty and commitment in its efforts towards ensuring commensurate punishments and recovery of the state's wealth, despite such a large-scale loot. He also reminded Siddaramaiah that he had led a 320-km foot march to Ballari against the illegal mining scam in 2010, when the Congress was in opposition. Patil had headed the Cabinet sub-committee, during the first Siddaramaiah-led Congress government (2013-18), which had brought the extent of loss caused by illegal mining. In Raichur, replying to questions by reporters regarding the letter, Patil said, '...I have brought it to the notice of the chief minister what has to be done, thereby it has to serve the state and the government has to get a good name, so the letter has been written. It is not a political letter. It is written in the interest of the state and its people. The CM has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously.' Asked whether he is suspicious that documents on illegalities may be destroyed, he said with the intention that such things should not happen. He has cautioned the administration and the concerned department. Noting that the Congress party has done a padayatre (foot march) against illegal mining fifteen years ago, the minister said, despite so many years and inspite of cabinet sub-committee under 2013-18 Siddaramaiah-led Congress government submitting a report about the quantum of loss, the action taken is not satisfactory. 'Out of more than 12,000 illegal mining cases being registered, only about 7 per cent have been investigated. In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion,' he said. Asserting that a logical end has to be given to all these pending cases, Patil said the government lost Rs 1.5 lakh crore because of illegal mining, and with the intention that serious steps are taken in this regard, he has written a letter to the CM. He said nine cases were handed over for the CBI probe. They said they will probe only three among them and sent back the remaining six. Similarly, the cases that were referred to the Special investigation Team (SIT), most of them have still not been subjected to probe. 'So I have written the letter.' Patil, in his letter, has said that the government can still act as there is still time. Asking the government to take all the necessary measures, he suggested appointing a Recovery Commissioner as per the provisions of the Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance, 1946. He has also sought the creation of a new SIT to take up investigation of cases that have not been probed, and setting up a special court to try these cases.
