Russia says ready to assist Iran amid Middle East escalation
ISTANBUL: Russia is ready to assist Iran in various ways amid the ongoing escalation in the Middle East, depending on Tehran's needs, the Kremlin said on Monday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia had offered mediation, but it would depend on what Iran required.
"We have stated our position; this is also a very important manifestation — a form of support for the Iranian side," he said.
Israel and Iran have been engaged in aerial combat since June 13, when Tel Aviv launched a surprise attack on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting retaliatory strikes from Tehran.
Meanwhile, the United States struck three main Iranian nuclear sites early Sunday, with US President Donald Trump claiming severe damage to the facilities and their "obliteration."
Commenting on the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow, Peskov said the talks would allow both sides to exchange views and give Tehran an opportunity to convey its proposals and position on the current situation.
Peskov added that the growing number of actors involved in the conflict was deeply regrettable and condemned by Russia.
"Iran was repeatedly discussed between Putin and Trump during their recent conversations, but the Russian president was not informed of Sunday's strikes.
"We believe that the fate of a country's leadership should be decided by its own people — not by third countries or their leaders," he said, in response to a question about Trump's remarks regarding regime change in Iran.
He added that the US strikes would not affect dialogue between Moscow and Washington, as these were "independent processes".
"It remains to be seen what happened to these nuclear facilities, and whether there is a radiation hazard. Although the IAEA has said there are currently no signs of radiation contamination, these developments are, of course, cause for legitimate concern," Peskov said. — BERNAMA

Ukrainian forces attack oil depot in Russia's Rostov region
(Reuters) -Ukrainian forces on Monday attacked and set ablaze an oil depot in Russia's southern Rostov region used to supply Russian forces in occupied parts of Ukraine, the Ukrainian military said. The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said the military's special operations units, in conjunction with rocket forces and artillery, had hit the Atlas plant in the Rostov region, not far from Ukraine's eastern border. "A strike by our forces in the area of the target has been confirmed," the General Staff said in a statement on Telegram. "A fire has been observed. The results of the strike are being clarified." The statement said the facility was used to provide fuel and lubricants to Russian units operating in Russian-occupied parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions on the war's eastern front. Ukrainian forces have been engaged in cross-border attacks, including energy industry targets, which the General Staff said was aimed at curbing Russia's economic potential to proceed with the more than three-year-old war in Ukraine. Ukrainian military bloggers had earlier reported on the raid on the oil depot, saying fuel tanks had been engulfed in a blaze in the incident. (Reporting by Ron Popeski, Editing by Rosalba O'Brien)

Qatar Temporarily Shuts Airspace Amid Escalating Regional Tensions
Traces are seen in the sky after Iran's armed forces say they targeted The Al-Udeid base in a missile attack, as seen from Doha, Qatar, June 23, 2025. REUTERS/Stringer ISTANBUL, June 24 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Qatar shut down its airspace temporarily on Monday evening as tensions in the region continued to escalate, the Foreign Ministry said, Anadolu Ajansi reported. A ministry statement said that the measure was taken to ensure the safety of its citizens, residents, and visitors. 'In light of Qatar's commitment to the safety of all individuals on its territory, the competent authorities have decided to temporarily suspend air navigation in the country's airspace,' the statement said. bootstrap slideshow The ministry emphasised that the decision was part of broader precautionary steps taken in response to evolving regional conditions. According to the statement, Qatari authorities are 'closely and continuously monitoring the situation' and are 'assessing developments in coordination with regional and international partners.' The ministry added that the public will be kept informed of updates through official channels. 'The safety and security of everyone in Qatar remains a top priority,' the ministry said, adding that the Gulf country will not hesitate to implement necessary protective measures. Regional tensions sharply escalated on Sunday after the US bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. The US attacks were the latest escalation in a US-backed Israeli military assault on Iran since June 13, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel.
