HANOI: Vietnam's stock market started June on a positive note, with a modest gain on Monday, primarily driven by small and mid-cap stocks.
The VN-Index recovered the 1,335-point mark despite early pressure from large-cap declines, while liquidity eased slightly and foreign investors continued to sell, albeit at a reduced pace.
Early on, the market experienced downward pressure from a number of large-cap stocks, briefly pulling the VN-Index below 1,325 points.
However, continued cash inflows into small and mid-cap shares helped the rebound to end higher.
By the close of trading, the VN-Index rose 3.7 points, or 0.28%, to 1,336.3 points on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange.
Market breadth leaned towards the gainers, with 201 stocks advancing and 125 declining. Liquidity fell by 6.7% from the previous session to 0.8 trillion dong.
The VN30-Index, which tracks the 30 largest listed companies by market capitalisation, edged down 0.64 points, or 0.04%, to 1,423.04. Within the basket, 16 stocks gained, 13 declined and one remained unchanged.
Leading the market's upward momentum was Vietnam Rubber Group – Joint Stock Co, which climbed 2.09% and contributed over 0.6 points to the VN-Index.
It was followed by gains in two banking stocks: Techcombank, up 1.31%, and Sacombank, which rose 2.7%.
On the other hand, several major stocks posted losses and that weighed on the index.
The Vingroup cluster led the decliners, collectively dragging the VN-Index down by nearly five points, with VIC being the most notable, slipping 0.41%.
Analysts from Viet Dragon Securities said: 'The market continued to face resistance at the 1,345-point level and retreated.
'Liquidity declined slightly compared to the previous session, suggesting reduced profit-taking activity and easing selling pressure, particularly as foreign outflows moderated. — Viet Nam News/ANN

U.S. Leading Economic Index inches down in May

WASHINGTON, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Leading Economic Index (LEI) ticked down by 0.1 percent in May, according to data released Friday by The Conference Board. The LEI fell by 2.7 percent in the six-month period ending May 2025, a much faster rate of decline than the 1.4 percent contraction over the previous six months, the data found. "The LEI for the U.S. fell again in May, but only marginally," said Justyna Zabinska-La Monica, senior manager of business cycle indicators at The Conference Board. "The recovery of stock prices after the April drop was the main positive contributor to the index. However, consumers' pessimism, persistently weak new orders in manufacturing, a second consecutive month of rising initial claims for unemployment insurance, and a decline in housing permits weighed on the Index, leading to May's overall decline," Zabinska-La Monica said. The Conference Board does not anticipate recession, but does expect a significant slowdown in economic growth in 2025 compared to 2024, with real GDP growing at 1.6 percent this year and persistent tariff effects potentially leading to further deceleration in 2026, the report said. This occurs amid President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs.

FBM KLCI slides amid cautious sentiment, geopolitical concerns

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI ended in the red on Thursday amid a cautious market undertone, as investors weighed ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the absence of fresh domestic catalysts. Market breadth remained negative with 660 losers outpacing 298 gainers, as 2.82 billion shares worth RM1.7bil changed hands. Dealers noted a lack of buying interest, as most investors continue to stay on the sidelines. Vietnamese, Malaysian News Agencies Eye Opportunities To Strengthen Ties: Bernama CEO

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama-VNA) -- The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and Bernama - the national news agency of Malaysia - can co-develop AI tools for multilingual news summarisation and voice generation in Bahasa Melayu and Vietnamese, according to Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. In an interview with VNA correspondents in Kuala Lumpur on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21), Nur-ul Afida suggested the two agencies initiate cross-training programmes, allowing editors and journalists from both sides to exchange expertise on AI utilisation, share articles through digital platforms, and exchange information. Both VNA and Bernama are members of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA). bootstrap slideshow VNA joined the organisation in 1969 and is an active member currently serving on its Executive Board. Nur-ul Afida said VNA has been a consistent and reliable partner in OANA, contributing actively to the regional media landscape through content sharing, coordination, and policy discussions. Their coverage of ASEAN and Indochina issues adds valuable perspectives. "Bernama appreciates the collaboration with VNA," she emphasised. The CEO also proposed that the two agencies should share a content platform through a cloud-based news hub for fast and secure content exchange between OANA members. During Party General Secretary To Lam's official visit to Malaysia in November 2024, the two countries upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, which, Nur-ul Afida said, creates greater opportunities for both VNA and Bernama to play a more significant diplomatic communication role.
